SFTD -Chapter 368 White Spot Reappearance (Part 9)

Speaking for the Dead6 min read369 of 429

Zhu Cuiwen stood up and didn’t follow the clerk out. Gathering her courage, she walked up to “Da Mao” with a fawning expression, rubbing her hands together ingratiatingly.

“Officer, you’ve already asked what you needed and I’ve already answered everything. I still have to support my family. Could you please return my husband’s ID and wallet to me first? I need to withdraw some living expenses, otherwise my son and I are going to starve this month. And my son’s tuition is due soon—things are really tight for us.”

Da Mao put down the notebook in his hand. His originally stern face revealed a faint, sinister smile. He lifted his hand, grabbed his cap, wiped away sweat, and put it back on.

That motion scared Zhu Cuiwen badly. She raised her hand defensively, afraid he was going to hit her.

But Da Mao simply put his cap back on and fixed her with a cold gaze as sharp as blades.

“I already said it. Before this case is solved, all physical evidence stays here. Even after it’s solved, it still has to be transferred to the procuratorate, and only after that can it proceed to sentencing in court.

As for whether you can get it back…

Or how much you can get back…

That’s not up to me.”

Zhu Cuiwen froze. Da Mao hadn’t spoken like this before. Suddenly, she snapped. She grabbed his collar and knocked his cap off.

“What did you say?! You can’t even guarantee I’ll get it back? Are you messing with me? Weren’t you just promising me all sorts of things a moment ago, saying if I cooperated you’d help me with everything?!”

With her movement, Da Mao stumbled backward toward the desk. His hand knocked into it, flipping the entire table over, which crashed into the double-sided observation mirror in front of Fengzi with a loud bang. Da Mao then fell to the other side and landed on the ground.

From the surveillance angle, it looked exactly like Zhu Cuiwen had pushed him.

After all, Da Mao was under 166 cm tall and definitely weighed under 110 jin (about 55 kg). That fall looked extremely “realistic,” complete with an “ah!” of pain.

Everything descended into chaos.

Zhu Cuiwen panicked. She looked at Da Mao, then at the shattered mirror, unable to believe she had caused all this. She turned to run.

Fengzi let out a long sigh. It looked like Da Mao wanted him to play along as a witness.

That sigh frightened Zhu Cuiwen. She hadn’t known there were people behind the glass. Her fleeing steps slowed abruptly. She backed away quickly, waving her hands frantically at Fengzi, who had come through the window.

But she couldn’t even explain herself clearly.

“It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me!

I didn’t do it!

I didn’t break it!”

At that moment, officers who had rushed in at the door blocked the exit completely. Seeing Da Mao lying on the ground, they immediately rushed in and pinned Zhu Cuiwen down in a joint restraint. At that point, there was nothing left for her to explain—only cries of pain.

The clerk looked up at Da Mao, who had his eyes closed, then at Fengzi, full of concern.

“Dr. Luo, what’s going on here?”

Fengzi looked at the two people on the ground, shrugged, and pointed at the surveillance camera.

“Just check the footage. This victim’s family member wanted to take the deceased’s money immediately. The case has just started. Da Mao said he had no authority to approve it, and she got angry—and then…well, that happened.”

As he spoke, Fengzi glanced around the room. It really was a mess. Da Mao’s cap had rolled all the way to the doorway, the table was overturned, the mirror on one wall was completely shattered, and the “acting cat” was lying on the ground.

A few officers dragged Zhu Cuiwen away, while two others went to check the surveillance footage. The clerk quickly called Huang Zhongsheng. After hanging up, she looked at Fengzi.

“Our chief said, if the situation is confirmed, she will be transferred to the public security detention team and charged with assaulting an officer—detention of no less than five days and no more than ten.”

Fengzi had already walked over to Da Mao and nudged him with his foot. Leaning down, he whispered in his ear:

“Your acting was over the top. Get up already. We still have real work to do. Don’t worry—she won’t dare trouble you again.”

At that moment, Da Mao suddenly sat up and grinned at Fengzi.

“Dr. Luo, how did you know I was acting?”

Fengzi rolled his eyes.

“Even if you’re useless, you wouldn’t lose to a woman like that.”

The clerk stood frozen, pointing at Da Mao in shock.

“You were pretending?”

Da Mao glanced at her.

“Look around the room. Can’t you see what it looks like? Or is the surveillance unclear? I just didn’t get injured. I was cooperating a bit to make the assault charge stick—otherwise would you be dealing with her coming here every day asking for money?”

The clerk shrank her neck. If she really came every day demanding money, it would be unbearable. Though the method was somewhat improper, it was undeniably effective—but she still felt like she had been used as a pawn.

“Get up if you’re fine,” Fengzi said.

At that moment his phone rang—it was Xu Biao.

“Fengzi, Xiao Hu has recovered the data from the phone. There were no saved contacts, but call logs, WeChat, SMS, and emails have all been restored. I’ve sent them to your email. Take a look.”

Fengzi narrowed his eyes. Normally Xu Biao would review things first before sending them over. Hearing the sirens in the background, he felt suspicious.

“You’re not at the center?”

Xu Biao hummed. “We’re heading to the Third People’s Hospital in Dongnan City, Changhe District. We’ll keep in touch if there’s news. Hanging up!”

Before Fengzi could respond, Xu Biao hurriedly ended the call.

Da Mao had already gotten up. Surprisingly, he actually had a scratch on his face—five or six centimeters long from his ear down to his cheek, still bleeding.

When Fengzi saw him about to touch it, he quickly stopped him.

“Don’t move. It’s open and bleeding. I’ll treat it.”

Da Mao quickly backed off, smiling in relief.

“No need, Dr. Luo. It’s fine like this. But take a photo for me as evidence—let Zhu Cuiwen see it. Otherwise Chief Huang will scold me.”

Fengzi shook his head.

“Enough nonsense. Chief Huang isn’t stupid. There’s nothing to misunderstand here. We should focus on the emails Xu Biao sent. The phone didn’t even have contacts, so we’ll have to go through call logs one by one. That’s a huge workload.”

Da Mao immediately got energetic.

“No problem. As long as there’s work to do. I’ll get more people and contact the telecom company—we can process it quickly.”

The two of them walked out. The clerk stamped her foot anxiously.

“Then what about this place?”

Da Mao shrugged.

“Make Zhu Cuiwen pay for it. Leave it to you. Someone like her—who cares about money and her life—will cooperate obediently.”

“……”

The clerk was left standing alone in the room, staring at the wreckage.

And not a single soul believed Da Mao’s words.
