The middle-aged man nodded cautiously and said, “I am Peng Guodong!”
Wang Man glanced at his watch in dissatisfaction and tapped the notepad with his pen.
“Hurry up, we’ve already waited ten minutes for you. There are only two households left in this building for the census. Are your family members not at home?”
Hearing Wang Man’s complaint, Peng Guodong visibly relaxed a little. He quickly opened the door and invited Wang Man and Zhou Hai inside.
“My wife is back in her hometown and hasn’t returned. My eldest son is a sailor and is out at sea. My second son seems to have gone out to play.”
Wang Man sat on the sofa and flipped through the records in his hand, then looked up at Peng Guodong.
“The second son is a student?”
“Yes, a high school student.”
“Call him back quickly. Students also need to fill out the form. This census is very strict. Also, bring out your household registration book.”
Seeing the densely packed form in Wang Man’s hand, Peng Guodong became even more convinced. He quickly took out his phone and made a call.
“Come back quickly, you need to fill out a form.”
After hanging up, he went into the bedroom to fetch the household register. Wang Man took it, copied a few details into his notebook, then handed it to Zhou Hai. Looking at the registered address, Zhou Hai asked, “You moved here after the demolition of Nanzhuang Second Village?”
“Yes, from the second village.”
“So this entire residential area is resettled households from First and Second Villages?”
Peng Guodong nodded. His earlier vigilance had completely disappeared as he pulled over a stool and sat down.
“Yes, most people from both villages are in this community. After all, we’re old neighbors, more familiar with each other. And many of us are even related in some way.”
Zhou Hai casually flipped to a page and pointed at a name.
“Is this Peng Guoan and Peng Guoxiang also your relatives?”
The question seemed meaningless, just asked casually. Peng Guodong, seeing that the two officers didn’t seem to care much, nodded.
“They’re from the same village, so we’re basically distant relatives within five generations.”
Just then, the sound of the door opening came from the entrance. A tall figure walked in and paused upon seeing two police officers inside, hesitating whether to enter.
Wang Man shook the paper in his hand and said to Peng Guodong, “This must be your second son, Peng Chunyang? Come over and fill out the form.”
Hearing this, Peng Chunyang looked at his father. Seeing his father hand him a pen, he walked over and began filling it out. Zhou Hai quietly stood up and moved toward the door, quickly opening it.
This silent movement went unnoticed by the father and son.
Wang Man raised an eyebrow. Suddenly he sprang forward, twisted Peng Chunyang’s arms behind his back, and slammed him onto the coffee table. At the same time, as Zhou Hai opened the door, a group of officers rushed in.
The standing, confused Peng Guodong was also controlled on the side.
Xu Biao and Da Liu entered carrying equipment cases, smiled at Zhou Hai, and walked straight toward the balcony.
Two officers took Peng Guodong into a bedroom and closed the door. Meanwhile, Peng Chunyang was handcuffed and forced into a chair, with one officer on each side holding his arms tightly.
The sudden change left the burly young man stunned. He instinctively struggled, but it was useless.
Wang Man grabbed his collar, staring him in the eye.
“Struggling now is meaningless. Sit properly and answer my questions!”
Then he asked, “Do you know Peng Chunlei?”
Peng Chunyang glanced toward the room where his father was being held, swallowed hard, and did not answer immediately. Wang Man shouted again.
“Don’t look! No one can save you now. Answer the question!”
With his arms twisted behind his back and handcuffed, held firmly by two officers, every struggle only caused him more pain. After a few attempts, he finally ran out of strength and angrily looked up at Wang Man.
He knew clearly that if he didn’t explain himself today, things would go badly for him. Thinking this, he opened his mouth:
“Yes.”
“How do you know him?”
“I’m technically his cousin. We’ve known each other since childhood, grew up in the same village, and even went to the same middle and high school after relocation.”
Zhou Hai stood in front of Peng Chunyang and said directly, “About half a month ago, did you make any request to Peng Chunlei?”
Peng Chunyang looked innocent, as if trying to move his numb arms, but the officers held him tighter. He gritted his teeth and stopped moving, then said: “After our first-year high school final exams, a few classmates went out to eat together. We joked around, saying we were sixteen already but hadn’t experienced women yet. I asked Peng Chunlei if he wanted to try it.”
“And then?”
Zhou Hai gestured behind him. The officers slightly loosened their grip, allowing Peng Chunyang to sit up straighter, looking almost defiant—like he had done nothing wrong.
“Then? That day we drank a lot. In his excitement, he said his sister Peng Chunling was also a woman—just a bit fat, but still quite pretty. I didn’t take it seriously.”
“A couple weeks ago, on a Friday, we went home together. He saw me smoking Yu Xi cigarettes and got jealous, asked for one. I said that’s easy, I could give him a couple packs, but he also had to let me ‘try what a woman feels like.’”
“And he agreed. So I gave him two packs of cigarettes.”
He paused again.
Wang Man kicked the coffee table hard, producing a loud bang that startled Zhou Hai as well. Peng Chunyang froze in fear, then quickly continued before anyone could ask.
“Don’t rush, I’ll continue. After that, I went home. After dinner, I heard knocking. When I opened the door, I saw Peng Chunlei dragging Peng Chunling with him.”
“Although Peng Chunling was a bit fat, she was fair-skinned and looked pretty good.”
“I let them in and gave them iced cola. Peng Chunlei asked if it was fine to just leave his sister here. I thought about it and didn’t let him leave, because his sister is mentally ill and I was afraid she might get triggered.”
“So I asked him: since we were going to ‘try it,’ why not do it together? He seemed interested. We messed around for a while and got sweaty. I told them to wait while I went to take a shower.”
“Peng Chunlei was watching TV and drinking cola, saying okay. Peng Chunling was also smiling and sitting there drinking. She didn’t even look mentally ill.”
“But when I came out after showering, both of them were gone. The room was empty, only the TV was still on, extremely loud.”
“The door was wide open, and a cola bottle had been knocked over, spilling on the table and floor.”
“I was angry. He said one thing and did another. Took the cigarettes and then backed out. Fine, leave if you want! But why spill cola everywhere?”
“I went downstairs and knocked on his door for a long time, no one answered. So I got angry and went home. I haven’t really spoken to him for two weeks.”
“That’s the whole story. Don’t exaggerate things. I really didn’t do anything!”
Zhou Hai narrowed his eyes.
What Peng Chunyang said was completely different from Peng Chunlei’s earlier statement—two entirely different versions.
And judging from his stiff, stubborn attitude, he seemed oddly confident, like someone telling the “truth” without thinking much.
But if he wasn’t lying, then it meant Peng Chunlei was the one lying.
But Peng Chunlei should know that once the police obtained evidence, they would verify it. If they checked with Peng Chunyang, the contradiction would be exposed immediately.
So why would he do that?
