As the printer hummed, all the relevant photos were printed out one after another.

Fengzi walked over to Zhou Hai’s side and handed him the photos. Zhou Hai sorted them according to the conditions he had already marked, categorizing and pinning them onto the whiteboard. Time passed second by second.

Just as it was nearing 12:30, the office door was suddenly pushed open. Xu Jun walked in.

“Huh! Forensic Doctor Zhou is here too. You all haven’t gone for lunch yet?”

Luo Yunfeng shook his head.

“This case still has no clear direction. We’re waiting for lab analysis results on some items before we can draw conclusions.”

Xu Jun quickly waved his hands, startled by Luo Yunfeng’s words. He hadn’t come to rush them.

“That’s not what I meant. I came to talk about Zhang Ziliang’s interrogation results, and also to coordinate with Forensic Doctor Zhou to see if we can determine the next direction of investigation.”

Luo Yunfeng paused.

“Have you verified all the personnel screenshots extracted from the corridor surveillance footage?”

Xu Jun nodded.

“Very easy to identify. I took all the screenshots to the Lijing Hotel. The front desk recognized most of them—about 22 people in total. They were either guests or staff staying at the hotel.

They all just passed through the fifth floor area and didn’t stay long. Only one cleaner lingered there for more than a minute. She delivered toiletries to Room 527. That was a room service request she received by phone.”

Zhou Hai reached out.

“Do we have a record of what time Zhang Huihui made the call?”

Xu Jun nodded.

“There should be. Let me check—I’ve left someone at the hotel.”

He dialed a number.

“Xiao Cheng, go to the front desk and ask what time Zhang Huihui in Room 527 requested room service.”

The other end seemed to take a while to check before reporting back.

“Brother Jun, the front desk record shows that at 5:40 this morning, Zhang Huihui called to request extra towels and toiletries. The lobby then used the intercom to call the fifth-floor supervisor, who likely asked the cleaner to deliver them.”

Xu Jun hung up and repeated Xiao Cheng’s report. Suddenly, Zhou Hai grabbed Xu Jun’s arm.

“Ask the cleaner—did she enter the room?”

Xu Jun shook his head.

“I asked that already. The cleaner said Zhang Huihui only opened the door a crack and did not let her in. It looked like Zhang Huihui wasn’t wearing any clothes.”

“How do they know she wasn’t wearing clothes?”

Xu Jun blinked.

“Only her arms, shoulders, and legs were visible outside the door, and they were all uncovered. The cleaner didn’t think much of it and quickly handed over the towels. I watched the interrogation video. The cleaner is a thin woman under 155 cm tall, probably around fifty years old. Even though they work in hotels, she didn’t pay much attention to such details and didn’t observe carefully.”

Zhou Hai walked to the whiteboard, as if suddenly remembering something, and waved at Fengzi.

“Were there any injuries in the victim’s vagina, or signs of sexual activity?”

Fengzi thought carefully.

“No visible injuries. But I did collect samples for testing. We’ll have to wait for lab results.”

Zhou Hai frowned slightly.

Right—still waiting for lab results.

Xu Jun looked out the window, then tapped the table and said, “Come on, both of you. You’re analyzing all this on an empty stomach. I’ve already had food sent over—eat first, then continue. Otherwise, brain hypoxia will affect your thinking.”

Fengzi threw a book at him.

“You’re the one with brain hypoxia.”

Xu Jun looked aggrieved, rubbing his stomach.

“Look at the time—it’s already past one. My stomach’s practically on fire.”

Just then, the door opened again. A young police officer walked in carrying several bags. Even before opening them, the rich aroma filled the room. Fengzi immediately laughed.

“Boss, if Xu Biao were here, he’d be thrilled. I can smell braised pork knuckle.”

Although Zhou Hai didn’t laugh, his expression relaxed noticeably.

“If Chief Huang finds out you’re wasting bureau funds like this, you’ll be in trouble when you get back!”

Xu Jun grinned.

“As long as it helps solve the case quickly, it’s fine. Besides, you’ve all been working too hard. We dragged you over early this morning—I feel bad about it. Come on, let’s eat.”

Fengzi patted the young officer on the shoulder.

“Thanks, buddy. Did you eat already? Join us?”

The officer quickly waved his hands.

“No need, leaders. We’ve already eaten.”

Xu Jun washed his hands and quickly sat beside Zhou Hai. The three of them started eating.

The cafeteria food at the center was passable at best. For someone like Zhou Hai, who was picky about food, it only served to fill the stomach.

The meal Xu Jun arranged, however, made Zhou Hai glance at him after a couple of bites.

“This is from Chai Shijian?”

Xu Jun nodded without hesitation.

Fengzi bumped Xu Jun.

“Not bad. You even know our boss’s taste. Confess—did you ask Chief Huang or Xu Biao?”

Xu Jun narrowed his eyes.

“When you have trouble, you look for your boss. I do the same. Our Chief Huang said, ‘If you want the horse to run, you have to feed it well.’ He had someone order it early this morning. Otherwise, how would I know?”

Zhou Hai looked at him.

“Just this once. Not again. This kind of thing wastes too much time. Food is just fuel.”

Xu Jun didn’t quite understand his tone and looked at the Fengzi instead. Fengzi gave him a reassuring look. The three quickly finished the food and cleaned up the boxes on the spot. Xu Jun even opened the window to ventilate the room.

Zhou Hai found himself increasingly approving of him—after all, doctors tend to have mild obsessions with cleanliness, and he naturally liked tidy people.

While rinsing his mouth, Fengzi sighed.

“Boss, if Xu Biao were here, would all this be enough for him alone?”

“Stop talking about him. He’s probably sneezing somewhere right now.”

All three of them laughed.

Just then, the door to the second team office opened again. Xiao Liang and Zhang Wenqi peeked inside. Zhang Wenqi looked genuinely surprised—he hadn’t expected to hear laughter from this room.

Seeing their expressions, the two quickly walked in.

Xiao Liang placed down a box and downed a glass of water before speaking.

“The scene has been fully cleaned. I also found one of the victim’s earrings and a ring. We’ve already extracted traces from them—mainly the victim’s fingerprints. Everything else will need lab results. Also, I found something very strange at the scene.”

Zhou Hai straightened up and looked at Xiao Liang, a hint of confusion in his eyes.

“Just say whatever you’re thinking. Even if it’s wrong, it doesn’t matter. What did you find strange?”
