The power outage meant there was no surveillance footage. The workers involved in the renovation could not see the sealed back door. Combined with all the previous coincidences, everything looked more and more like a long-prepared, premeditated act.
So who was it?
Was it really the mastermind behind the Migao serial poisoning case?
And if it was… then who exactly was it?
Who was this person?
Zhou Hai suddenly squatted down, clutching his chest. The piercing pain made it hard for him to breathe, as if he could feel Lu Xi’s suffering himself. Xu Biao quickly rushed over and helped him up.
“Hai-zi, we’re already investigating,” Xu Biao said urgently. “You don’t have the right to collapse now. Lu Xi’s parents and the little girl still don’t know. We need to give them an explanation.”
Zhou Hai nodded heavily and looked toward Team Leader Huang.
“Get the sketch of that temporary cleaning worker and send it to Xu Biao. Also compare the times she entered and left—check nearby surveillance cameras. There must be clues. I’ll apply to have Dr. Nan assist you.”
Team Leader Huang patted Zhou Hai’s shoulder.
“Brother, take care of yourself. We’ll do everything we can. Don’t worry—I’ll have the bridal shop sealed immediately. As for Lu Xi’s autopsy, I suggest someone else handle it. Take my advice.”
Zhou Hai pressed his lips together and lowered his head. After a long silence, he finally looked up again.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry. I don’t have the right to fall apart right now. But I need to go inform Lu Xi’s parents… and the little girl as well.”
Xu Biao turned and walked toward Liu Da, explaining Zhou Hai’s intention. Liu Da had no objections and quickly walked over. He glanced at Shao Zongmao beside him and paused—Shao Zongmao also looked at him, equally stunned.
“Zongmao, why are you here?”
Shao Zongmao gave a bitter smile.
“This bridal shop is mine. I don’t come often, but I’ve owned it for several years.”
Liu Da nodded.
“Alright, then there’s nothing more to say. Seal the shop for now. It stays closed until the scene is fully processed. Also, all your staff must cooperate with the suspect sketch.”
Team Leader Huang walked over and lowered his voice.
“The sketch is being made, but from the results, it seems the person was wearing makeup.”
Liu Da waved his hand.
“That’s fine. I’ve already called Xiao Hu and Dr. Nan. They’ll help analyze the suspect’s facial structure. No matter how much makeup is used, bone structure won’t change—we will find him.”
Team Leader Huang raised his chin toward Zhou Hai.
“As for Lu Xi’s parents, it’s better if you tell them. Zhou Hai may look normal, but that’s what worries me most.”
“Don’t worry,” Liu Da said. “I’ll meet them at the hospital. I’ll give them this promise myself.”
His eyes were also slightly red. Such a wonderful young couple—no one expected this outcome. If this case was not handled properly, none of them in the department would be able to continue working. Everyone was holding back a single breath of anger.
“Also,” Liu Da continued, “he mentioned again that this might be revenge from the mastermind behind the Migao poisoning case. I want all related files.”
Liu Da narrowed his eyes and glanced at Zhou Hai.
“All the materials are with Wang Man. The suspected connection points are Third People’s Hospital and Zongtai Insurance. Both are under Changhe jurisdiction. Go coordinate with him for a joint investigation.”
Huang Zhongsheng didn’t say more and immediately went to arrange it.
Liu Da walked back to Zhou Hai and patted his shoulder.
“I’ll go with you to the hospital. I’ve already contacted Lu Xi’s parents through Dr. Nan. We’ll meet them together.”
Zhou Hai’s lips trembled slightly, then he nodded hard.
At this moment, he was truly afraid to face Lu Xi’s parents.
This morning he had personally taken Lu Xi out—so alive, so vibrant—and now…
He sighed faintly and turned back to Xu Biao and the others.
“Xiao Liang and Fengzi, send the evidence for examination. Later Fengzi and I will return to the center. I’ll need your help today…”
Before he could finish, Fengzi nodded firmly.
“I’ll go prepare and wait for you.”
Xiao Liang said nothing. His silent support was, in fact, what mattered most to Zhou Hai right now.
All Zhou Hai could think about was finding the real murderer and avenging Lu Xi. That thought had taken root in his mind like wild grass, spreading uncontrollably.
Liu Da called everyone into the car and headed to the hospital. Xu Biao carried Zhou Hai’s coat.
After getting in, Zhou Hai took out his wallet from his clothes and handed a bank card to Liu Da.
“I forgot earlier. If you meet the shop owner, please help me pay for the wedding dress and suit. That’s what Xi wanted. I promised her I would buy it for her.”
Liu Da took the card, looking out the window as he tried to control his emotions.
“Alright. I understand. I’ll make sure her wish is fulfilled.”
The car soon entered Lu University Hospital. Seeing the large “Emergency” sign, they got out quickly and headed toward the rescue room where Lu Xi was located.
Before they even entered, they heard heartbreaking screams from inside.
Zhou Hai paused. Liu Da grabbed his arm.
“You stay outside. I’ll go in first and see.”
Zhou Hai shook his head.
“I promised Xi I would take care of her parents. I brought her out—this explanation must come from me.”
Liu Da stopped and blocked the others behind him. Zhou Hai was right—he was the one who needed to face this.
Xu Biao leaned over worriedly.
“Brother Liu, can he handle it alone?”
Liu Da didn’t answer. He looked at the room, took off his cap, and his eyes turned red.
“In cases like this, he has to face it himself. Otherwise, he’ll never get past it.”
“Tell me everything about that Migao poisoning case again. I want all the details.”
……
Zhou Hai followed the sound into the emergency room.
The little girl stood at the foot of the bed, clutching her clothes, staring wide-eyed at Lu Xi covered with a white sheet. She neither cried nor spoke—just stood there silently.
His entrance didn’t even attract her attention.
Beside the bed, Lu Xi’s mother was crying uncontrollably, collapsed over her daughter. The grief of a white-haired mother sending off her black-haired child felt like blades stabbing Zhou Hai’s heart.
Lu Xi’s father was also in tears, but he did not rush forward. He simply held Lu Xi’s hand, standing quietly and crying.
Hearing footsteps, Lu Xi’s father suddenly lunged at Zhou Hai, grabbing his collar with burning eyes.
“Zhou! Tell me—what happened to Lu Xi?! This morning when you took her out she was fine! Why is she lying here covered in blood now? Tell me!”
Xu Biao and the others tried to enter, but Liu Da stopped them. The little girl also came closer.
“Uncle Zhou… what happened to Sister Xi? Why won’t she wake up when I call her? Please save her… I want Sister Xi!”
Her repeated cries made Lu Xi’s mother turn around. She pulled the terrified little girl into her arms and broke down crying.
Zhou Hai looked at all three of them.
“Today, when Lu Xi and I were trying on wedding dresses, she was stabbed in the heart inside the fitting room. I rushed her to the hospital immediately… but she still didn’t make it.”
“Before she left, she told me to take good care of you and the little girl.”
“I’m sorry… I failed to protect Xi.”
Lu Xi’s parents looked up at him together.
At that moment, they could only see the blood-stained Zhou Hai. The knife had already been removed, and his words froze them in place.
Lu Xi had been murdered—not an accident?
The overwhelming information briefly suppressed their grief. They rushed toward Zhou Hai and grabbed his sleeves, only then noticing that he was covered in blood.
“Tell us clearly… what exactly happened?”
