Relief flashed across Zhou Hai’s face. “I found it. I found it!”

Chu Menghan’s legs nearly gave out beneath her. Zhou Hai’s expression had scared her so badly that she had almost screamed just now.

“What do we do next?”

The slight relaxation on Zhou Hai’s face disappeared as he grew serious again.

“We wait for the ambulance. Right now I can only suppress the bleeding like this, but he’s probably been losing blood for over six hours already.

The human body has a self-preservation mechanism. During massive blood loss, circulation is redistributed to ensure blood supply to vital organs like the heart, kidneys, and brain.

So his lower limbs have been ischemic for a very long time. I don’t know whether he’ll ever be able to stand again.”

Seeing the worry in Zhou Hai’s eyes, Chu Menghan suddenly wanted to step forward and hug him.

At that moment, the sound of an ambulance siren came from outside, and both of them finally let out long breaths of relief.

Zhou Hai nodded toward Chu Menghan. She released the gauze and rushed outside, quickly explaining the situation. Two doctors and a nurse immediately charged in.

“Which one of you can take over compressing the ruptured artery?”

The two doctors instantly shook their heads. They had never even heard of such a technique before. If they tried it themselves, the patient would probably die even faster.

“You should keep doing it. We’ll transport the patient to Luda Hospital immediately!”

Zhou Hai shook his head.

“To First Affiliated Hospital. Wasn’t Luda Hospital’s hepatobiliary department sealed off?”

One of the doctors looked up in shock.

“Sealed off? Why didn’t we hear about that before coming here?”

Before Zhou Hai could answer, Chu Menghan grabbed the doctor by the collar and shouted: “Just move the damn patient already! Forensic Doctor Zhou doesn’t have time to chat with you!”

The three medical staff froze for a second at such a rough woman, then hurriedly unfolded the stretcher and transferred the patient onto it.

As Chu Menghan passed through the living room, she noticed an imaging film bag. Seeing the words Luda Hospital printed on it, she quickly picked it up and followed them into the ambulance headed for First Affiliated Hospital.

Zhou Hai instructed the nurse to establish IV access and increase fluid pressure as much as possible. Then he told Chu Menghan to open the medical records and gestured toward one of the doctors.

“Find the patient’s blood type and tell the emergency department to prepare 2,000 milliliters of blood.”

The doctor hurriedly searched through the file before calling the ER to notify them.

Only then did Zhou Hai look at the two of them again.

“The patient’s body temperature is dropping very quickly. When I opened his abdomen just now, the entire abdominal cavity was already filled with blood. That means his blood loss was no less than 1,500 to 2,000 milliliters.”

The two finally understood.

After a violent jolt, the ambulance stopped at the emergency entrance of First Affiliated Hospital. Zhou Hai stayed beside the patient as he was transferred onto a gurney and rushed into the emergency room together with him.

Meanwhile, Chu Menghan brought all the medical personnel involved in the surgery back to the bureau for a second round of investigation.

After an entire sleepless night, they still found nothing.

The patient himself was still unconscious in critical care, making many details impossible to confirm.

The next day, Chu Menghan accompanied Zhou Hai to First Affiliated Hospital again.

The moment they entered the ward, they saw Yu Tianfeng chatting with two doctors. As Zhou Hai and Chu Menghan approached, one of the doctors turned around after hearing footsteps and immediately widened his eyes in excitement.

“Student Yu, this is the doctor who saved you yesterday.”

Hearing this, Yu Tianfeng struggled into a sitting position.

“Hello, thank you so much. May I ask how I should address you?”

Neither Zhou Hai nor Chu Menghan wore police uniforms today. Visiting a patient in uniform would feel far too oppressive.

Chu Menghan nodded to the two doctors and showed her badge.

“Could we speak with Yu Tianfeng alone for a moment?”

The two doctors nodded and quickly left the room, thoughtfully closing the door behind them.

Chu Menghan pointed at Zhou Hai.

“This is Forensic Doctor Zhou from the Southeastern City Forensic Identification Center. Don’t you want to know why we discovered you unconscious at home and in mortal danger?”

Yu Tianfeng paused, then shook his head.

“After I got home from the hospital, I just felt weak. I thought I was hungry, so I got up to find something in the refrigerator. But when I reached the kitchen, I don’t remember anything after that.”

Zhou Hai stared into Yu Tianfeng’s eyes.

“Where do you study?”

“I’m a graduate student at the Law School of Ludong University. I started my postgraduate studies last year.”

“Have you offended anyone? Or had conflicts with anyone?”

Yu Tianfeng shook his head, utterly bewildered.

“No. I’m just a student. Every day it’s the same routine—classroom, dormitory, cafeteria. My parents are ordinary government employees. How would I even get the chance to offend someone?”

“Why didn’t your parents come for the surgery?”

Yu Tianfeng shrugged.

“The doctor told me it was just a minor surgery and that family signatures weren’t necessary, so I didn’t tell them. I didn’t want them to worry.”

Zhou Hai patted Yu Tianfeng on the shoulder.

“Focus on recovering first. If you remember anything, call either me or Captain Chu. Here’s the number. Oh, right… I almost forgot to apologize. The situation was urgent, so the incision on your abdomen isn’t exactly pretty. If you ever want to take off your shirt at the gym in the future, you may need to think twice about it.”

Yu Tianfeng instantly burst into a radiant smile.

The cheerful grin of this sunny young man was strangely infectious. How could someone so clean and straightforward provoke such vicious revenge and attempted murder?

“Please don’t say that, Forensic Doctor Zhou. Without this scar, I’d already be dead. It’s a symbol of my rebirth.”

After saying goodbye to Yu Tianfeng, Chu Menghan drove toward the center while Zhou Hai silently organized his thoughts as he stared out the window.

There had been no progress on Chu Menghan’s side, but the hospital couldn’t remain sealed indefinitely. The hepatobiliary department was one of the hospital’s most profitable divisions, treating dozens of patients every day.

Could it be that the killer simply didn’t care about the losses the hospital would suffer?

Or perhaps the hatred inside him—or her—had reached a point where it could never be forgotten?

Chu Menghan suddenly asked: “What are you thinking about?”

Zhou Hai looked at her.

“The case. Yu Tianfeng studies at Ludong University… I feel like I’ve heard that name somewhere before, but I can’t remember where. It seems we still need to investigate Yu Tianfeng’s social connections. Also, do you have all the personnel files the hospital provided?”

Chu Menghan nodded.

“They’re in the briefcase on the back seat.”

Zhou Hai read through the files the entire ride. Chu Menghan didn’t interrupt him.

After all, the investigation had already reached a dead end. Now that the attempted murder had failed, the killer had lost the initiative and likely wouldn’t act again anytime soon. If the culprit really remained hidden among the crowd, they might never find them.

So now they could only hope Zhou Hai could connect all the scattered clues.

“These files… are they for everyone involved in the surgeries?”

Chu Menghan frowned, not understanding why he suddenly asked that.

“Yes. Vice President Ye only gave us these.”

At that moment, the car turned into the center’s compound. Chu Menghan made no move to get out, as though she intended to leave immediately.

Zhou Hai glanced at her and tapped on the car door.

“Come on down. Since your side hasn’t made any progress, we might as well take another look at those two nail guns. I have a feeling the secret is hidden somewhere on them.”

“Nail guns? Didn’t you already examine them?”
