A whole week in the hospital left Zhou Hai speechless.
It was truly a life of having clothes handed to him and meals brought to his mouth. Lu Xi practically wanted to help him even with going to the bathroom and bathing. Ever since the first day, when he had nearly burst from holding it in, Zhou Hai would instinctively clamp his legs together every time he saw Lu Xi’s soup. Certain other parts of him would tighten too.
Doctor He was even more shameless, bringing over a urinal. Zhou Hai had no choice but to endure it since he couldn’t move around, but there was absolutely no way he could relieve himself in bed—especially with Lu Xi there.
After seven painful days, Doctor He finally approved Zhou Hai’s discharge so he could recuperate at home. Xu Biao naturally came over to freeload a meal, bringing Fengzi and Xiao Liang along too.
Seeing so many people, the little loli obediently locked Pork Knuckle into his cage. After all, Zhou Hai’s injury had a lot to do with Pork Knuckle, and she had secretly felt guilty ever since. Though she never said it aloud, her recent good behavior had left Zhou Hai extremely puzzled.
After welcoming the three inside, Zhou Hai hopped out of the room with Lu Xi supporting him. Surprise and delight appeared on his face when he saw them.
“Oh? You guys are here. Sit down!”
Xu Biao sprawled boldly onto the sofa. Since it was Fengzi and Xiao Liang’s first time meeting Lu Xi, they looked a little restrained and bowed slightly toward her.
“Hello, Sister-in-law!”
“Hello, Teacher Lu!”
The two glanced at each other awkwardly, completely lacking coordination, and both burst out laughing. Lu Xi froze mid-motion. That “sister-in-law” had come way too suddenly. Zhou Hai, however, seemed quite satisfied, a faint smile lingering at the corners of his lips.
The little loli curiously eyed the huge box Xiao Liang was carrying. Flowers or nutritional supplements for a hospital visit made sense, but this giant box seemed a little excessive.
Xiao Liang didn’t sit down immediately. Pointing at the box behind him, he said: “This is our gift for Brother Hai!”
“Quit talking nonsense and unpack it for the boss!”
Xu Biao reached out as though to stop him, but seeing Zhou Hai already hobbling closer, he simply folded his arms and sat back to watch the show.
Though the little loli didn’t know what was happening, Xiao Liang’s behavior already explained enough. She walked over beside him.
“Big brother, what’s inside?”
Her adorable little face suddenly appeared in front of Liang Honggang. Startled, Xiao Liang nearly cut his finger with the box cutter. He quickly smiled at her.
“Hello, Luoluo. The three of us thought it over. You definitely don’t lack food or daily necessities. What Brother Hai needs most right now is this.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the entire box was opened. Two wheels were assembled together, wrapped in plastic film. Fengzi tore off the plastic while pulling the wheels apart. With a click from the center latch, a brand-new folding wheelchair appeared before everyone.
Lu Xi’s eyes widened as she looked between the wheelchair and Zhou Hai. The little loli smacked her lips repeatedly, looking at Xiao Liang with an expression that practically screamed good luck surviving this.
“Big brother, you picked this gift, didn’t you?”
Xiao Liang nodded.
“Yep. Brother Xu was busy running around the hospital, so Forensic Luo and I searched everywhere but couldn’t find anything suitable. Then we thought, since Brother Hai injured his leg and can’t move around easily, this would be perfect.
“Look, this part can even be electrically controlled…”
“…”
As the electric wheelchair suddenly began blasting The Most Dazzling Ethnic Style, black lines filled Zhou Hai’s forehead. Taking a deep breath to suppress his anger, he stopped Xiao Liang before he could demonstrate any more functions.
“Return it. I have crutches.”
The little loli struggled not to laugh as she glanced toward Xu Biao. At the moment, Xu Biao was munching on an apple as though none of this concerned him at all. She knew perfectly well this was all Xu Biao’s idea. Those other two combined still weren’t as crafty as one Xu Biao.
Xiao Liang looked stubborn.
“How can that work? Brother Hai, you need proper rest. We’re here today on official orders. Captain Liu and the others said the second team won’t be assigned any work lately. They’ll wait until you recover…”
Fengzi tugged at Xiao Liang, who was still rambling, and shot Zhou Hai a glance. Only then did Xiao Liang belatedly realize Zhou Hai’s expression didn’t look too good.
“Brother Hai, what’s wrong?”
Zhou Hai gestured toward the seats.
“Put the thing down and sit.”
The two sat down while Lu Xi helped Zhou Hai over to a single chair. She checked the time.
“You all sit first. I’ll make a few more dishes. Stay for dinner!”
Hope instantly lit up Xiao Liang and Fengzi’s faces. They had specifically come at this hour to freeload a meal. Just as the two were about to politely decline first, Zhou Hai raised a hand to stop Lu Xi.
“No need. They only came to see me and will leave right away. Don’t trouble yourself. Taking care of me lately has already exhausted you. How could they bear to let you work harder?”
Xu Biao swallowed the last bite of his apple. Unable to keep watching the two continue provoking Zhou Hai, he rubbed the little loli’s head.
“Little loli, we’re leaving. You and Sister Xixi take good care of Brother Zhouzhou, okay? If there’s any heavy lifting, call me.”
Though the other two didn’t quite understand, Xu Biao had already spoken, so they couldn’t stay any longer. They reluctantly got up, waving goodbye to the little loli and Lu Xi. Seeing that Zhou Hai truly had no intention of asking them to stay, they finally left awkwardly.
The little loli gathered the cardboard boxes and packaging from the floor and tossed them outside. Then she sat in the wheelchair, pushing the control lever. The electric wheelchair hummed forward while singing loudly. It actually moved pretty fast. But when it approached Pork Knuckle’s cage, the dog cowered trembling in the corner in fright.
“Zhouzhou, try it! It feels pretty good. This way Xixi won’t have to help you go to the bathroom anymore!”
The black lines on Zhou Hai’s forehead deepened further. Lu Xi laughed so hard she could barely stand, pulling Zhou Hai’s head against her chest as she comforted him.
“They’re adorable. They just wanted to cheer you up. Why did you chase them away?”
“They freeload food. Of course I chased them away.”
The little loli’s voice drifted from the other end of the hallway.
“That’s right! Anyone who steals food must be driven away. Xixi belongs to our family, hmph!”
Lu Xi shook her head, smiling helplessly. But noticing Zhou Hai still leaning against her without moving, she shifted slightly and crouched down to look at his somewhat flushed face, reaching out to check his temperature.
“What’s wrong? Why is your face so red?”
Zhou Hai shook his head.
“That… it’s soft.
“Not small either. I like it…”
Lu Xi froze for a long moment before lowering her head and following Zhou Hai’s gaze to her chest. She reached out and grabbed his ear.
“Tell me honestly—whose have you measured before?”
Zhou Hai shook his head again.
“No one’s!”
In the next instant, his ear got twisted like a spinning top. Zhou Hai quickly raised a hand in surrender.
“Easy! Where would I even get the chance to touch anyone else? Who’d let me? Do you think I’m a breast specialist who goes around comparing sizes for fun? In my eyes, aside from you and Luoluo, everyone else is the same gender. What’s there to look at?”
Lu Xi slowly loosened her grip and gently rubbed his reddened ear.
“Did it hurt?”
Zhou Hai instinctively started to nod, then suddenly shook his head instead.
“My ear doesn’t hurt. My heart does! I still wanted another hug. Those three jerks are too evil!”
Lu Xi rolled her eyes shyly at him.
“Enough, stop fooling around. Luoluo is still here!”
Zhou Hai pouted.
“Fine then. I need to use the bathroom.”
Lu Xi immediately stood up to help him, but Zhou Hai waved her off.
“No need. I can do it myself. I can’t just casually let you look at me!”
Lu Xi’s face instantly turned bright red behind him. Watching Zhou Hai wobble to his feet, she suddenly felt like hitting him. Yet after a moment, a smile still curved onto her lips.
This man cared about her deeply—that was the most precious thing of all.
