As expected, the newlyweds simply covered themselves with the quilt and went to sleep.
After being exhausted all day and going through such an absurd wedding, Meng Jinyao was both physically and mentally drained. Even though she was in an unfamiliar environment and lying beside a grown man, she still fell into a peaceful sleep.
After all, her husband had a hidden illness, so she wasn’t worried at all. Even if he didn’t have such a condition, she wouldn’t have minded consummating the marriage. She was already married—what was the point of acting like a chaste martyr guarding her purity? That would be meaningless.
Gu Jingxi lay down with complicated emotions. In his twenty-nine years of life, this was the first time he had ever shared a bed with a young woman. He had thought she would be nervous and unable to sleep. Instead, before long, he heard her steady breathing.
Surprised, he turned his head to look at his defenseless, soundly sleeping bride. The little girl was only fifteen or sixteen, yet she possessed such calmness and adaptability. She was far more composed than girls her age. He didn’t know how she had cultivated such a temperament—he only wondered whether she could maintain it in the days to come.
The next day.
The faint morning light pierced through the clouds and dispelled the darkness. Meng Jinyao slowly woke up. When she opened her eyes, unfamiliar bed curtains came into view. Her expression tightened, then she belatedly remembered what had happened yesterday and let out a sigh of relief.
She turned her head toward the outer side of the bed. Her new husband’s eyes were still closed—he hadn’t woken up yet.
Gu Jingxi was truly handsome: brows like painted strokes, a face as smooth as jade. Among the Gu family, he was the most outstanding in appearance. It was said that his former fiancée had once been the most beautiful woman in the capital. Unfortunately, because of his hidden illness, the engagement had been broken off. Otherwise, the union of the capital’s most handsome man and most beautiful woman would surely have been a stunning sight.
A moment later, Gu Jingxi suddenly opened his eyes.
“Have you had enough looking?” he asked.
His sudden voice startled Meng Jinyao. She steadied herself and replied calmly, “No. My husband is handsome—am I not allowed to look?”
Gu Jingxi was left speechless. Yesterday, he had thought she was bold and composed. Today, he realized she was also sharp-tongued.
He sat up and looked down at her, asking coolly, “Why me?”
Meng Jinyao knew what he meant. She shrugged lightly and said frankly, “Husband, don’t you think you were the best choice? Your two nephews couldn’t protect me. Your son even ran away on his wedding day—what good would it be for me to marry him? But you are the head of the family, with the highest status. If I marry you, I become a marquis’s wife. Who would dare bully me? Even your son would have to call me Mother and pay his respects. I get a ready-made good son as soon as I marry in—doesn’t that sound great?”
Gu Jingxi was stunned. He hadn’t expected her to be so straightforward. As for her last sentence, she was clearly being sarcastic. That was no “good son,” but a rebellious and irresponsible one.
Still, she was right. Being a mother was far better than being a sister-in-law. With the status of an elder, there were many things one could do.
Seeing the slight curve of her lips and the fleeting glint of cunning in her eyes, she finally looked like a lively young girl her age. Amused, Gu Jingxi smiled faintly and said, “After Xiuming was adopted into the family, he grew up without a mother’s guidance and became rather unruly. In the future, I’ll have to trouble Madam to discipline him.”
Meng Jinyao exclaimed in surprise, “Husband, aren’t you afraid I’ll bully him using my status as an elder?”
Gu Jingxi replied indifferently, “He deserves to be dealt with. Madam may handle him as you see fit.”
Meng Jinyao froze at his words.
Wasn’t he afraid she might be cruel and ‘deal with’ Gu Xiuming until there was nothing left of him? Or was it because Gu Xiuming wasn’t his biological son, so he didn’t care that much?
