For the next several days in a row, Gu Jingxi left early and returned late, unusually busy.
Meng Jinyao didn’t think much of it. She was already used to this—whenever there was an important case, he would get swamped. After a while, things would settle down.
Late at night, when all was quiet, Meng Jinyao had already fallen asleep. Half-asleep and hazy, she felt someone lie down beside her, then she was pulled into a warm embrace. Unconsciously, she murmured, “Husband,” and with practiced, natural ease, she reached out to wrap her arms around the man’s waist, burying her face against his chest and rubbing lightly.
Gu Jingxi lifted a hand to brush aside a few strands of hair that had fallen across her face, lowered his head, and kissed her slightly pouting lips. In a gentle voice, he said, “Mm, I’m here. Go back to sleep.”
With that, Gu Jingxi was about to sleep as well. After a full day of busyness, he was utterly exhausted. But the very next moment, he met a pair of clear, bright eyes, and all his drowsiness vanished.
On the inner side of the bed lay a chubby little baby, lying on his tummy, lifting his small head and staring at him pitifully.
Gu Jingxi: “……”
Why was this little tagalong sleeping here again?
Father and son stared at each other, big eyes against big eyes. After a long moment, Gu Jingxi resigned himself to fate. He gently let go of his delicate wife and turned to pick up the little baby.
The child didn’t cry or fuss, so he was probably not hungry yet—but once he did get hungry later, he’d surely wail at the top of his lungs. Better to bring him to the wet nurse first.
There were two wet nurses, taking turns on night duty, precisely because they feared the young heir might wake up with no one to care for him. When the night-duty wet nurse saw Gu Jingxi carrying the child over, she immediately roused herself and stepped forward to bow, then asked, “My lord, is the young heir hungry?”
“Probably not yet. Handle it as you see fit,” Gu Jingxi replied, handing Wanwan over to her.
The wet nurse took the child—and then saw the marquis not even spare the young heir a second glance before turning around and leaving.
Standing under the eaves, holding a baby who understood nothing, whose emotions were stable and who was obedient and adorable, facing the early autumn night breeze, the wet nurse felt a bit… lost in the wind.
To say the marquis didn’t dote on the young heir wouldn’t be accurate. If the young heir so much as sneezed, the marquis would get nervous and immediately have someone summon the household physician.
But to say he doted on him—well, the marquis often dumped the young heir on them in the middle of the night. Every time that happened, they couldn’t help feeling that the marquis seemed just a little… fed up with his own son.
When Gu Jingxi returned to the bedroom, he found the person on the bed already awake, sitting up and looking at him sleepily as she asked, “Husband, where’s Wanwan?”
Without changing expression, he replied, “A-Yao, did Wanwan wake you up? The little rascal woke up hungry just now and was crying his head off, so I carried him to the wet nurse.”
“Wanwan cried?” Meng Jinyao was surprised, then immediately blamed herself. “It’s all my fault for sleeping so deeply—I didn’t even hear him.”
“He had just started crying when I took him out,” Gu Jingxi said. “It’s normal you didn’t hear it.” Then he smoothly changed the subject. “A-Yao, it’s getting late. Let’s rest early too. Wanwan has the wet nurse looking after him.”
Meng Jinyao didn’t suspect a thing. “Mm. Let’s rest early then. You came back so late—you must be exhausted.”
Gu Jingxi climbed onto the bed. Looking at his now fully awake little wife, lively and lovely, those expressive eyes seeming to speak on their own—when she smiled at him, it was as if there were a thousand strands of tenderness within. Suddenly, he didn’t feel sleepy at all. He leaned in and kissed her red lips.
Meng Jinyao’s eyes flew open. Feeling sorry for his body and wanting him to rest properly, she hurriedly pushed him away and said softly, “Husband, you’ve been swamped with official duties these days—you must be very tired. Tonight you should rest well. If we make a fuss so late, you won’t be able to get up tomorrow.”
Gu Jingxi looked at her with wounded eyes. “A-Yao… do you think your husband can’t do it?”
Meng Jinyao sighed helplessly. “Husband, that’s not what I mean. I’m just worried about your health.”
“So you still think I can’t do it,” Gu Jingxi said as he reached out to untie her sash, lowering his head so that his lips brushed against her neck. His warm breath made her shiver lightly. Then she heard his low, husky voice say, “A-Yao, take a good look—see whether your husband can do it or not.”
She had only been worried that he’d exhaust himself—who would’ve thought he’d overthink it like this? Hearing those words, she immediately stopped feeling sorry for him. Without hesitation, she turned the tables, pushing him down. Before he could react, she flipped over and sat astride his waist.
Gu Jingxi froze slightly, then broke into a smile. “So A-Yao likes it this way? Then I won’t move.”
Meng Jinyao lowered her gaze at him. He lay there obediently, the collar of his sleeping robe slightly open, revealing a fair, well-defined chest. His eyes smiled up at her, a picture of “do as you please.”
Seeing this, Meng Jinyao swallowed.
“Feast for the eyes” wasn’t a phrase meant only for women—it applied to men too.
She wasn’t about to chicken out. Having already decided not to worry about whether he’d get tired, she went all out. But slowly, she began to run out of strength. Looking at the still energetic man beneath her, she asked softly, “Husband… aren’t you tired?”
Gu Jingxi looked utterly innocent. “I’m not the one exerting myself—how would I be tired? Could it be that A-Yao is tired? Well, women do have less strength than men. It’s normal to get tired. Shall we switch, then?”
The moment she heard that, Meng Jinyao was fired up again.
The words “can’t do it” weren’t something men could tolerate—and women couldn’t tolerate them either. If she nodded, wouldn’t that be admitting she couldn’t do it?
She decided that no matter what, tonight she was going to make him surrender in bed.
Gritting her teeth, she said, “Husband, I’m not tired.”
How much time passed, she didn’t know. Meng Jinyao was truly exhausted, her waist feeling like it no longer belonged to her. She genuinely couldn’t understand it—why was she the one who got tired when her husband took the lead, and when she took the lead, she was still the one who got tired… and even more so?
Seeing the sweat bead on her forehead and how worn out she was, Gu Jingxi finally gave in. “Our A-Yao is really fierce. Your husband is tired too—and sleepy. How about we sleep first and continue tomorrow night? What do you think?”
Hearing this, Meng Jinyao felt a spark of energy again—but thinking of her sore, aching waist, she gave up. She lifted her chin slightly, looking proud and smug. “I already told you it was late and not to mess around—you wouldn’t listen. Now you know what tired feels like? If you can’t get up tomorrow, I won’t wake you. Just wait to be late for court and get reprimanded by His Majesty.”
Gu Jingxi smiled, his eyes full of indulgence as he went along with her words. “A-Yao’s scolding is right. It’s all my fault—I shouldn’t have made a fuss. Let’s sleep.”
As he spoke, he turned over and laid his little wife, who was sprawled in his arms, back onto the bed. He touched her cheek, then let his hand slide down to her waist, kneading it with just the right amount of pressure.
Meng Jinyao yawned. Tired and sleepy, she relaxed, and before long, she was drifting off. In a daze, she seemed to hear the man chuckle softly by her ear:
“This little girl is quite prideful—even in matters like this, she has to compete.”
