Afterwards, Meng Jinyao didn’t say much more to Du Sizhe. They exchanged a few casual words, and she found an excuse to take her leave, bringing her two maids along. Deep down, she knew that even though her cousin hadn’t voiced any opposition, he still didn’t approve.
Once outside the Cha Ran Residence, Meng Jinyao lifted her gaze. The blazing sun hung in the sky, dazzling and bright. As she looked at the golden orb, a sudden wave of longing for Gu Jingxi welled up inside her—she really wanted to see him.
Qingqiu gently comforted her, “Madam, don’t take your cousin’s words to heart. The fact that he can say such things only shows he doesn’t understand the bond between you and the Marquis.”
Meng Jinyao slowly lowered her gaze and replied softly, “His words don’t shake me in the slightest. I’m just a little angry.”
Ningdong added, “Madam, just let his words go in one ear and out the other. Since what he says is unpleasant, it’s best to meet him less in the future. But don’t be angry. The Marquis would hate to see you upset, and he wouldn’t want your mood to sour.”
Hearing this, Meng Jinyao’s expression softened. Thinking of Gu Jingxi, a small smile curved her lips. “Ningdong is right. If my cousin doesn’t approve of me being with the Marquis, then we’ll simply keep our distance. I’m not angry anymore. Let’s stroll around for a while first. When it’s almost time for him to finish work, we’ll head to the Dali Temple. Maybe we’ll even catch him when he’s done.”
Qingqiu and Ningdong nodded in agreement, accompanying her through the streets for a while before calculating the time to reach the Dali Temple just before the end of work.
Meanwhile, Gu Jingxi was leaving the Dali Temple with several colleagues, chatting as they walked, when he suddenly caught sight of three figures at the foot of the steps. His young wife was smiling brightly at him. First surprised, he couldn’t help the corners of his mouth from curling into a gentle smile, his eyes softening.
The others noticed Meng Jinyao and her maids as well. Having met Madam Gu before, they recognized her and, being sensible, stepped forward to pay their respects, then found an excuse to leave so as not to get in the way.
Gu Jingxi stepped forward and asked softly, “A-Yao, what are you doing here?”
Meng Jinyao looked at him, her smile deepening, and said in a sweet, clear voice, “I missed you, husband. So I came.”
Gu Jingxi froze. He rarely heard his young wife say such things. Hearing it suddenly now, a wave of indescribable joy surged in his heart. Since they were still in public, he restrained the impulse to pull her into his arms, instead taking her small hand and asking, “I remember you went to see your cousin this afternoon. Did you come straight here after meeting him?”
Meng Jinyao nodded. “Yes, I came right after parting with him. Has work ended now? Do you still have anything to attend to, husband?”
Gu Jingxi replied truthfully, “Nothing important. Shall we go home now?”
Meng Jinyao answered, “I don’t want to go home just yet. Since you’re not busy, let’s have dinner out tonight. I rented a painted boat. We can enjoy the lake and the night scenery while we eat. How do you feel about that, husband?”
Gu Jingxi never refused her requests and immediately agreed. “Alright. It’s been a long time since we enjoyed the lake. But I’ll need to change into regular clothes first.”
Noticing his official robe, Meng Jinyao said, “You shouldn’t wear that robe out in public. It commands respect and awe from everyone. Shall we go home to change?”
Gu Jingxi replied, “No need. I have clothes at the Dali Temple. Occasionally, I need regular clothes for official business, so I left a couple of sets there.”
Meng Jinyao then sent Qingqiu and Ningdong back home, waiting for Gu Jingxi to change before they left together in a carriage.
In the carriage, Meng Jinyao leaned against Gu Jingxi, her upper body nestled in his arms, tilting her head slightly and staring at him without blinking.
The man had eyebrows like ink strokes, a strikingly handsome face, and now a gentle smile that shone like a clear breeze under the moonlight. It made Meng Jinyao’s heart flutter.
He was excessively handsome, yet his remarkable looks didn’t overshadow his talents. Learned in history and literature, versed in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, skilled in martial arts and archery, and astute in judgment—he was the perfect combination of talent, beauty, and virtue.
Yet, some people still focused on his minor flaws.
Meng Jinyao felt both anger and sorrow for this.
But never mind. If others couldn’t see her husband’s worth, that meant they were blind. As long as she wasn’t, it was fine. Her husband was radiant, brilliant, virtuous, and perfect in every way—worthy of a lifetime of trust.
Feeling her cling more than usual, Gu Jingxi cupped her cheek and smiled. “A-Yao, why are you so clingy today?”
Meng Jinyao wrapped her arms around his neck and gazed into his eyes, her voice soft and delicate: “I miss you, husband. I miss you so much.”
Her bright apricot eyes reflected him, full of affection that nearly overflowed.
From her eyes alone, it was clear—she liked him, very much.
Gu Jingxi looked into her loving gaze, his heart melting. In that instant, all thoughts vanished; his mind held only her. He leaned down to kiss her cheek. “We just parted this morning.”
Pouting, Meng Jinyao murmured, “I don’t care. I just missed you.” Then she nuzzled against him, acting playfully.
Gu Jingxi noticed something unusual. One hand held her close, the other gently caressing her cheek, he asked softly, “A-Yao, did something happen?”
Innocently blinking, she said, “Nothing happened! What could happen? I just missed you. Seeing you makes me happy.”
Seemingly unsatisfied with just kissing her cheek, she cupped his face and pressed her lips to his soft lips.
Gu Jingxi, stirred by her sweetness and bold action, cupped the back of her head and took the initiative.
After a long, lingering kiss, Gu Jingxi looked at his little wife, her eyes half-closed, breathing uneven, and his gaze darkened. Grasping her chin, he lowered his head to kiss her rosy lips again.
When the passionate kiss ended, Meng Jinyao rested against him, catching her breath. Once composed, she looked up at his transcendently handsome face: “Husband, you’re so good-looking.”
Gu Jingxi chuckled, “This little mouth… did someone smear honey on it today? Why is it so sweet?”
“Sweet? Then, husband, why don’t you try again?” Meng Jinyao giggled, eyes fixed on his lips, clearly inviting him.
Seeing her boldness, he regretted once more having given up his medical studies; otherwise, he wouldn’t be so helpless now.
After a moment, Gu Jingxi leaned down to kiss her rosy lips again. Looking into her eyes, he said with a hint of playful aggression, “Just a little taste for now. In a while, I’ll properly savor you, to see just how sweet you really are, A-Yao.”
Somehow, Meng Jinyao sensed a trace of danger—but she didn’t think much of it, only giggling and replying cheerfully, “Alright.”
