Weirui Pavilion.
Before it even reached quarter past the You hour, the sky had already completely darkened.
Gu Jingxi had been busy until now before returning home. After entering the room, he took off his fox-fur cloak dusted with snow and handed it to a maid.
When Meng Jinyao saw him come back, she instructed the maid, “The Marquis is back. Set the meal.”
Afraid she might have gone hungry, Gu Jingxi said gently, “A-Yao, if you’re hungry next time, eat first. You don’t have to wait for me. I’ve been quite busy lately and coming back late.”
“It’s actually not that late,” Meng Jinyao replied as she placed the hand warmer she was holding into his hands to warm them. “Winter days are short and nights are long, so it gets dark early. We used to have dinner around this time anyway.”
Seeing her say this, Gu Jingxi didn’t press further. He took out a palm-sized porcelain white cosmetic box from his robe and handed it to her.
Meng Jinyao paused briefly, then quickly broke into a delighted smile and accepted it. “What is this?” After all, cosmetic boxes didn’t always contain rouge—hand cream, face cream, and lip balm were often stored in them too, so it was impossible to tell from the outside.
Gu Jingxi replied, “I bought it when I passed by Zhu Yan Pavilion. The proprietress said this is their improved formula—Condensed Jade Moisturizing Cream. It’s for the face, more moisturizing than before, and especially suitable for autumn and winter when the skin gets dry.”
Hearing this, Meng Jinyao opened the box and caught a faint, elegant fragrance that was refreshing and pleasant. Her smile deepened. “Thank you, Husband. I really like it. It smells nice too.”
Seeing how happy she was, Gu Jingxi’s lips curved upward as well. “As long as A-Yao likes it.”
Meng Jinyao said, “I also have something for you.”
Gu Jingxi asked curiously, “What is it?”
She smiled mysteriously. “I’ll show you later. Let’s eat first.” With that, she handed the box to Qingqiu and told her to place it on the dressing table in the inner room.
After dinner and bathing.
Gu Jingxi was about to get onto the bed when he suddenly heard his little wife, who was sitting wrapped in the quilt, say, “Wait!”
He froze for a moment, then reached out and ruffled her hair, teasingly asking, “Did I upset Madam somehow? Not even letting me get on the bed—are you planning to send me to sleep in the study?”
Meng Jinyao shot him a look. “What nonsense are you thinking? Who’s sending you to the study? Stretch out your hands and close your eyes. I have something for you.”
Hearing this, Gu Jingxi remembered what she had mentioned before dinner. Seeing how secretive she was, he grew even more curious. He obediently stretched out his hands and closed his eyes.
Meng Jinyao lifted the quilt, picked up the result of her hard work over the past several days, and placed it into his hands like presenting a treasure. “Alright. Open your eyes and see if you like it.”
Gu Jingxi froze the moment he touched it. Opening his eyes, he saw that he was holding a moon-white winter outer robe with silver-thread patterns. The embroidery was exquisite, the brocade fabric soft and smooth.
He hesitated. “A-Yao, did you make this yourself?”
“Who else would it be?” Meng Jinyao glared at him. “Don’t you like it?”
“I like it. A-Yao, your embroidery is wonderful—better than what professional seamstresses make.” Gu Jingxi beamed as he caressed the robe fondly.
Seeing that he liked it, Meng Jinyao felt delighted too. “Try it on and see if it fits.”
He complied and put it on. The length was perfect. Wearing it over his sleepwear made it look slightly loose, but with thick clothes underneath, it would fit just right—about the same size as his usual outer robes.
Meng Jinyao nodded repeatedly. “Not bad, it fits well. I asked the seamstress about your measurements before, but I was still worried about making mistakes.”
Gu Jingxi said gently, “You’ve worked hard, A-Yao.”
“I only made it in my spare time. It wasn’t hard.”
After saying that, she crooked her finger, signaling him to come closer. She thoughtfully helped him take off the robe and put it away, then pulled him onto the bed. Turning over, she pounced on him, cupped his handsome face, and kissed him boldly.
With her being so proactive, Gu Jingxi naturally didn’t hold back. He flipped over and pressed her down.
On one hand, he wanted to be intimate with her; on the other, he was following the doctor’s advice to seek some stimulation to aid his recovery.
After their passionate encounter, nearly three-quarters of an hour had passed.
Meng Jinyao got dressed and leaned into his arms. The blush on her face hadn’t faded, her eyes misty and moist, alluring and captivating.
With soft fragrance and warmth in his arms, Gu Jingxi once again cursed in his heart: That Doctor Wen is a quack!
After a while, Meng Jinyao spoke about what had happened in the morning.
“Husband, I went to greet Mother today. She said Xiuming has become much more steady and sensible and wants to find him a wife. But I persuaded her to put the idea aside for now. She probably won’t think about it for some time.”
Gu Jingxi lowered his head and kissed her forehead. “A-Yao did well.”
Meng Jinyao looked up at him in confusion. “Husband, why don’t we tell Mother Xiuming’s true nature?”
Gu Jingxi replied, “He’s a grandson she’s cherished for many years. She’s emotionally attached to him. No matter what we say, if she doesn’t see it herself, she’ll still hold hope. Only when she witnesses his true self beneath the disguise will she be completely disappointed.”
Meng Jinyao frowned. “But if he does something bad, wouldn’t someone get hurt?”
“Have you forgotten?” Gu Jingxi smiled faintly. “I have people watching him. Everything he does is under my control. Even if he wants to harm someone, he won’t succeed.”
Then he narrowed his eyes slightly and said slowly, “But if he truly tries to hurt someone and takes action, that will use up his last chance.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a wicked thought arose in Meng Jinyao’s heart. She suddenly hoped Gu Xiuming would cause trouble soon. She had long disliked that hypocritical unfilial son and couldn’t wait to see his downfall.
Fine, she admitted it—she was quite bad, actually wishing for someone to make a mistake early so they could be punished.
Seeing the sly glint in her eyes and her mischievous smile, Gu Jingxi laughed and asked, “Little troublemaker, what crooked idea are you thinking about now?”
Hearing this, Meng Jinyao restrained her smile and glared at him. “How can you say that? What crooked ideas could I have? You’re wronging me. I wasn’t thinking of anything—I was just thinking of something happy.”
Gu Jingxi reminded her, “It’s fine to think about it, but don’t put it into action, alright?”
“Do you think I’m that stupid?” She rolled her eyes at him and snorted. “I don’t want anything to do with his affairs. Let him mess around on his own. I’ll just watch what kind of trouble he can stir up.”
Gu Jingxi smiled warmly, tightened his embrace, and said softly, “A-Yao, it’s getting late. Let’s sleep.”
