Two hours later, Old Madam Shen’s condition had finally improved.
The women of the household breathed a sigh of relief. If the Old Madam had passed away now, it would have brought them no benefit.
“Just now, did you say Lanxi has arrived?” Old Madam Shen, feeling a bit better, immediately began thinking about the Shen family’s affairs.
“Yes, she’s outside handling memorials.”
“Call her in.”
…
“Grandmother, are you feeling better?” Shen Lanxi asked with concern.
Not only had she come in, but Shen Congwen and his brothers followed as well.
“I’m better now. I heard you’re busy handling memorials.”
Shen Lanxi smiled: “These are urgent matters; they cannot wait.”
Old Madam Shen sighed: “Even with all your duties, you still come to see an old woman like me.”
“Grandmother, what nonsense! If I didn’t come, it would truly be as if I only care about the Great Zhou, not my family.”
Old Madam Shen felt both gratified and joyful, yet a little uneasy.
“You may all leave now; I want to speak properly with Lanxi.”
The others filed out of the room.
“Lanxi, it was your grandmother who was at fault in the past,” Old Madam Shen said, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Shen Lanxi replied: “Grandmother, what are you saying? We are family. There’s nothing to be sorry about.”
Hearing this, Old Madam Shen’s tears fell even faster.
“In the past, I couldn’t let go of my pride. I always thought I could press you down with my seniority, treating you unfairly.”
Shen Lanxi relaxed and smiled: “Grandmother, hearing you say this makes all my hardships and fatigue worthwhile. Take care of yourself—you will surely live a long life.”
Old Madam Shen nodded, deeply moved.
“Grandmother, I’ve already sent for the divine doctors from Yaowang Valley. Take good care of yourself. With their care, in three to five days your health will be better than before.”
Old Madam Shen had originally intended to use this opportunity to discuss a title for one of the younger family members, but her granddaughter’s words made her forget.
“Grandmother, rest well. Tomorrow there are still memorials to be reviewed at court, and I have my own busy work to return to.”
Old Madam Shen smiled kindly: “Go ahead. Take care of yourself. Don’t stay up too late.”
“I understand, Grandmother.”
…
Before leaving the Shen residence, Shen Lanxi specifically went to see her mother.
“Mother, what happened to Grandmother?”
Zhou Xinrou’s eyes flickered with a hint of glee.
“Shen Yuantang replaced the new tea with strong, overnight tea.”
Shen Lanxi’s face filled with sorrow: “We grew up together. She was raised at Grandmother’s knee—how could she do something to harm her?”
“How could she do such a thing?”
Zhou Xinrou said: “I told you not to be so trusting of the Shen family. You didn’t listen.”
Shen Lanxi sighed: “I thought that because they grew up together, she would never harm her own family.”
“People’s hearts change. Only a mother will truly care for you,” Zhou Xinrou reminded her.
“Mother, I understand, but it’s still hard to accept!” Shen Lanxi bowed her head, looking wounded.
Seeing this, Zhou Xinrou was quietly pleased.
“Just remember this once. Mother understands. After all, you grew up together, and your feelings cannot be severed overnight. But learn from this, and be wary of the Shen family in the future.”
“They didn’t come from Mother’s womb. No matter how strong your previous bonds, you will never be completely united.”
Shen Lanxi lowered her head and nodded.
“I will remember, Mother. Thank you for your guidance.”
Zhou Xinrou nodded: “Go, and focus on your affairs. I’ll watch over the Shen family—nothing will go wrong.”
“I’ll send extra help to look after Old Madam Shen so no one has a chance to interfere.”
“Thank you for your care, Mother.”
Once outside the Shen residence, Shen Lanxi’s expression darkened.
“Where did Shen Yuantang go?”
“To the Cheng Pastry Shop. The owner had prior dealings with Shen Yuantang and has been confirmed to be Zhou Ruyuan’s man.”
Shen Lanxi: “Ignore it for now. Keep monitoring her. I want to see how far she can go.”
Old Madam Shen’s condition posed no major danger—she just needed proper care. After consulting, the household decided that the concubines and daughters of secondary wives would care for her, while the legitimate children prepared Shen Yuantang’s dowry.
Three days passed in the blink of an eye. Only two days remained before Shen Yuantang’s departure.
On this day, taking advantage of people coming in and out of the estate’s shops, a young man quietly slipped into Shen Yuantang’s room.

“Has anyone seen the Princess?” The gold shop delivered the peony headpiece. After checking the accounts, Madam Liu asked the household maids.
“The Princess seems to be in her room and hasn’t come out.”
“Lunch was delivered from the kitchen.”
Madam Liu decided she had to go herself so Shen Yuantang could check the dowry list. She brought two maids along.
Before approaching, they heard voices of flirtation inside.
Madam Liu’s face changed dramatically.
How could there be a man in the back residence? And making such sounds?
She was about to be married off to the northwest! If an outsider saw this, what would become of the Shen family’s reputation?
“You two, go fetch the masters of the four rooms immediately.”
Madam Liu’s face darkened in fury.
This Shen Yuantang, though lacking in other areas compared to her sister, was unmatched when it came to men.
She was ruining the family’s reputation, shameless and ignorant of propriety.
Madam Liu drove everyone nearby away. Soon, Shen Congwen’s four brothers arrived.
“Go in and see for yourselves. I don’t dare go in—it’s too embarrassing!” Madam Liu said, dragging Madam Miao aside.
“Should we tell the Princess?”
Madam Miao was stunned.
This is the Shen residence! When had outsiders been allowed to enter?
This was Shen Yuantang’s courtyard. Hearing such shameful sounds, how could Shen Congwen not understand?
“I’ll kill this shameless girl!”
Shen Congwen and his three brothers rushed forward.
With a crash, the door was kicked open, followed by Shen Yuantang’s screams.
“You… shameless girl! About to be married off—how could you do something so disgraceful?” Shen Congwen’s vision darkened with rage. He ground his teeth, glaring at Shen Yuantang.
“You’ve brought shame on the Shen family. How can you face the world with your head held high?”
“Go die! Our Shen family does not have a daughter without shame like you!”
Shen Congwen was furious beyond measure.
“Father, I was wrong. I was only meeting with Sun Lang because I have feelings for him. Since my marriage is about to happen, I just wanted to clarify things with him.”
Shen Congwen’s face turned even darker.
The mess on the floor, the disheveled clothes of two people—did this look like a meeting to clarify matters?
“Shen Yuantang, the Shen family does not have a daughter like you. From now on, you are no longer a member of the Shen family.”
“Even in death, you are forbidden from entering the Shen family tomb. Your name will be erased from the genealogy.”
“If you still have any shame, take your own life!”
