At the shop entrance, a delicate and slender woman was kneeling, weeping with her face covered, while a child beside her cried heart-rendingly.
A crowd surrounded them, pointing and whispering. Some people sympathized, others looked at them with contempt; the discussions never ceased.
From the murmurs, Shen Lanxi roughly understood what had happened. While Madam Song was away traveling for business, her husband had taken a mistress, who had even borne him a child.
This was not the first time they had come to the shop to cause a scene. Madam Song had been so angered that her health had suffered, and she had not shown herself for several days.
Shen Lanxi and Wei Dongzhu went to the back door of the shop, intending to slip inside quietly. Unexpectedly, they were stopped by a rude servant.
“The master isn’t home,” the servant said harshly. Without even asking who they were, he impatiently tried to shut the door.
Wei Dongzhu glanced at Shen Lanxi. Her face had darkened, and she said coldly, “Kick the door.”
Wei Dongzhu struck it with one kick. The door burst open, and the servant was knocked to the ground.
“Who are you to dare break in? Do you know who the owner of this shop is? If I tell you, you’ll be scared to death!” the servant shouted, clutching his chest, bluffing bravely though inwardly afraid.
Wei Dongzhu sneered. “You mean the Regent Prince, don’t you?”
The servant’s eyes widened. He knew—and still dared to act so arrogantly?
“Since you know, hurry and kneel to beg forgiveness! If my master reports you to the Regent Prince, your whole families will be beheaded!” the servant continued to bluster.
Shen Lanxi let out a cold laugh and stepped inside.
“Kill? I’d like to see how your master intends to kill.”
Seeing that they were not afraid and even dared to enter, the servant panicked, covered his chest, and ran off.
“Should I chase him down?” Wei Dongzhu asked.
“No,” Shen Lanxi replied. “Let him bring his master to me.”
Wei Dongzhu frowned. “How could Madam Song allow her household to abuse the Regent Prince’s name like this?”
Shen Lanxi clapped her hands, summoning a hidden guard.
“Go and bring a squad of the Capital Guards.”
“Yes!”
Wei Dongzhu immediately realized she intended to make a big matter of this. Madam Song was someone she had personally promoted; it would be a pity if she were ruined.
“Let’s find Madam Song first,” Shen Lanxi said.
Just as they were about to split up, the servant returned with more than a dozen hired thugs.
“It’s these two who aren’t afraid of death!”
“Beat them! They forced their way in—if they’re beaten to death, it won’t matter!”
There were more than a dozen men, but Shen Lanxi didn’t even need to act. Wei Dongzhu knocked them all down in a few blows.
The servants and thugs were terrified and began begging for mercy.
Shen Lanxi lowered her eyes and looked down at them coldly. “Where is Madam Song?”
Seeing that things were going badly, the servants tried to run, but Wei Dongzhu broke the legs of two of them. Only then did they behave.
“Spare us, sirs! We were only hired to guard the house—it has nothing to do with us!”
“It was the master of this house who did it. He said Madam Song had contracted a terrible illness and was afraid she might infect others, so he locked her in the firewood shed in the back courtyard.”
Wei Dongzhu glanced at Shen Lanxi; she nodded. He shoved one of the servants forward to lead the way.
Seeing Shen Lanxi’s slender build and that she had not made a move, the remaining servants assumed she was a weak scholar and tried to flee.
Expressionless, Shen Lanxi broke both their legs. With one kick came a crisp cracking sound. Only then did they realize she was even more terrifying than the man before.
For a moment, pleas for mercy, the sound of kowtowing, and crying filled the air.
Wei Dongzhu soon returned, carrying the unconscious Madam Song.
“Send someone to fetch a doctor, and bring her some food and water,” Shen Lanxi ordered.
As Wei Dongzhu reached the door, he saw a squad of Capital Guards arriving and immediately instructed them to summon a doctor.
Seeing Shen Lanxi’s grim expression, the guards did not dare approach her directly and instead turned to Wei Dongzhu.
“General Wei, what should we do?”
After thinking for a moment, Wei Dongzhu said, “Two of you go to the front of the shop and keep an eye on that mother and child who are causing trouble. Two more investigate their identities. Another two investigate the relationship between Madam Song’s husband and that woman. Leave five men here, and the rest go bring Madam Song’s husband here.”
“Yes!”
With their orders, the guards quickly dispersed to investigate.
In the front, people still knew nothing of what had happened in the back and continued letting the woman and child kneel among the crowd.
Soon Madam Song’s husband appeared and immediately began loudly condemning her.
“What a vicious-hearted wife! How could she let you and your child kneel here so long? The child is so young—how could she be so cruel?” Tian Chunshan said angrily. Yet when he helped the woman up, his face was full of tender concern.
“These past years, Song has been away constantly, neglecting her mother-in-law, husband, and children at home. Ever since you came, you’ve devoted yourself to caring for the elders and the children and managing the household. Not only does she show no gratitude, she humiliates you and your child like this. She’s utterly heartless!”
People planted by Tian Chunshan in the crowd began stirring up opinion.
“A married woman should follow her husband. Madam Song is far too unrestrained.”
“And now she’s suffering retribution. She’s contracted a terrible illness—must be heaven punishing her for her wickedness.”
“A woman who doesn’t stay home to support her husband and raise children, but goes out every day showing her face—only a kind man like Master Tian would tolerate it. Anyone else would have divorced such a vicious woman long ago.”
“Dealing with men every day—shameless…”
Hearing the murmurs, Tian Chunshan secretly felt pleased.
Song Hehua would not last more than three days. Once she died, this enormous shop would be his. In the future, he would become a favored figure of the Regent Prince instead.
A woman who tried to dominate a man deserved this fate!
But the smugness in Tian Chunshan’s eyes did not last long. With a loud crash, the gate connecting the back courtyard to the front was kicked open.
Tian Chunshan and the shop assistants all jumped in fright, while the onlookers outside assumed only that the door had been slammed loudly—
Until Shen Lanxi walked through the corridor and appeared.
Her face was disguised, so Tian Chunshan did not recognize her. Seeing a stranger emerge from inside, he immediately shouted for the assistants to seize her.
Behind Shen Lanxi came Wei Dongzhu, and behind him, Capital Guards in official uniform.
People might not recognize Shen Lanxi or Wei Dongzhu, but they recognized the guards’ uniforms.
“Why have the Capital Guards come?”
Tian Chunshan’s heart skipped a beat, and the color drained from his face.
When Madam Song was carried out, Tian Chunshan had already gone pale as death.
“Madam Song looks seriously ill!”
“She’s in such condition—why come out instead of resting inside?”
The captain of the Capital Guards raised his voice to explain, “Madam Song is not ill. This villain Tian Chunshan drugged her, locked her in a woodshed, and left her without food or water for three days—she nearly starved to death.”
Tian Chunshan’s legs went weak, and he collapsed to the ground in terror.
The woman holding the child sensed something was wrong and turned to flee, but two hidden guards who had been watching her seized her on the spot and threw her to the ground before the crowd.
