Just as Wei Dongzhu was about to strike Shen Yuantang unconscious, Ban Sicao and the messenger from the Imperial Guard arrived.
“Your son is sick? Hurry up, don’t waste time!” Ban Sicao lazily walked forward.
Shen Yuantang glared. “What do you mean?”
Wei Dongzhu interjected: “Don’t be ungrateful. He’s the best palace physician! Take him to treat your child!” Shen Yuantang thought, Why is this person becoming more unreasonable by the minute?
Once Shen Yuantang understood, she immediately shouted:
“I want the Grand Physician, not him! Where’s my elder sister? I want to see her!” She screamed and tried to rush inside.
Wei Dongzhu raised his hand and threw Shen Yuantang back.
“This is palace territory! You dare to storm in—are you trying to get yourself killed?”
Shen Yuantang stumbled, almost falling, but regained her balance and, tears streaming, pleaded: “General Wei, Brother Wei, you’re going to be my future brother-in-law! Are you really going to stand by and do nothing?”
“My son is also your nephew in the future! If he dies, I won’t live either! If something happens to me, how could my elder sister have peace of mind? Just let me in! Can’t I go ask the Grand Physician myself?”
Ban Sicao disdainfully picked at his ear and said impatiently: “Do you really want to see Song Daoxi, not me?”
Wei Dongzhu said firmly: “Stop this nonsense and go to the Prince’s residence to treat the child.”
Ban Sicao was about to leave when Shen Yuantang grabbed his arm.
“You’re not going! I want the Grand Physician, not you!” She didn’t know if she sent him there, whether she could still get the Grand Physician later.
He could not go.
She wanted Shen Lanxi to know—right now, no one was treating her son. If something happened to him, it would be Shen Lanxi’s fault.
Wei Dongzhu frowned and suppressed his anger, scolding: “Stop fooling around! Go save your child. Every minute you waste here could cost your child his life!”
Shen Yuantang shouted back: “No! Only the Grand Physician can save my child! I want the Grand Physician! I don’t want this ignorant amateur. What if he fails to save my son and harms him instead?”
Ban Sicao muttered: “Has she always been this crazy, so clueless?”
Wei Dongzhu shot him a sharp look: “Don’t say another word. Go to the Prince’s residence immediately. If she doesn’t go, you go!”
Reluctantly, Ban Sicao started to leave, but Shen Yuantang pulled him back.
“You’re not allowed to go! You’ll only put my son in danger.”
“Shen Lanxi, don’t you care at all about sisterly feelings?”
“Shen Lanxi, how can you be so cold-blooded? You won’t even save a child. You let him die!”
“If you hate me, take it out on me, not my son! He’s still small, he’s innocent!”
Shen Yuantang cried heart-wrenchingly, gripping Ban Sicao’s arms tightly.
Wei Dongzhu, unable to tell her the Grand Physician was a fraud, and unable to use force, could only shout in exasperation: “Shen Yuantang, don’t be ungrateful!”
Shen Yuantang shouted in accusation: “General Wei, you’ve changed! Back in Dongchuan, you cared for us siblings so much. Since being with Shen Lanxi, you’ve become just as cold and heartless as him!”
Ban Sicao could no longer tolerate it.
“Fine! I won’t go! Let go of me!”
“If something happens to your son, it’s not my responsibility.”
“Even if you carry me there in a grand sedan, I still won’t go!”
“Wei Dongzhu, quickly notify the Prince—bring this madwoman back!”
But even though Ban Sicao had promised not to go, Shen Yuantang still wouldn’t let go.
Wei Dongzhu had no choice and summoned two Imperial Guards, giving separate orders:
“Go to the Prince’s residence and call the Prince.”
“Inform the Regent Prince: Shen Yuantang insists on having the Grand Physician go.”
The two guards split up and quickly delivered the messages.
Shen Yuantang’s crying lessened slightly, but she still didn’t release Ban Sicao.
Shen Lanxi could forget about using him to placate her—never!
Since the Prince had been notified, she would wait here. Her son was a royal grandson; with the Prince personally requesting, would the Grand Physician dare refuse?
“Can you let go now?” Ban Sicao patted his wrist. If she didn’t, the pressure from her small hands would be too much.
Shen Yuantang, believing she had planned it cleverly, gripped his arm tightly:
“I won’t let go. Not until someone comes. If you dare touch me, you’re plotting against the imperial family. Prepare for your entire clan to be implicated!”
Ban Sicao’s temper flared, and he struggled hard.
“Let go, or I’ll act!”
“If I act, arms and legs could be broken, life may be lost…”
Wei Dongzhu, frustrated, was about to turn and enter the palace when his eyes caught a familiar figure approaching with a child on her back.
Weren’t they supposed to be prevented from coming out? How did they reach the palace? Could this be the arrangement of someone behind the scenes?
They must not reach here.
Wei Dongzhu turned into the palace. Soon, the old Wei family soldiers guided the mother and child to another location.
“How did you come here?” Wei Dongzhu asked. He had purposely gone around the west gate and circled back to meet them.
“General, Yan’er has a high fever. I really have no other way,” Qiao Niang said timidly.
Wei Dongzhu snapped, “If the child is sick, go to a clinic!”
Qiao Niang lowered her head, hesitant: “We have no silver.”
Wei Dongzhu wanted to slap himself. He had prepared food, drink, and clothing for them, assuming they wouldn’t go out, and hadn’t brought silver. He hadn’t expected the child to get sick.
“Take this money and find a doctor immediately!” He gave Qiao Niang all the silver he had.
The child kept sliding down her back. Qiao Niang lifted him carefully, took the money pouch, and prepared to leave.
Wei Dongzhu, moved, reached out and took the child himself.
“I’ll escort you. Hurry!” He had barely spoken before moving four or five meters ahead.
Qiao Niang quickly ran to catch up.
Meanwhile, Zhou Ruyuan hurried on horseback to the palace gates.
“Shen Yuantang, what are you doing?” Causing a scene at the palace gates was a capital offense. Without her status, she would have been executed already.
Seeing Zhou Ruyuan, Shen Yuantang felt like she had found her savior. She released Ban Sicao’s arm and dashed forward.
“Prince, you came just in time! Let’s hurry into the palace to see the Grand Physician!”
Zhou Ruyuan listened to her, but his eyes were on Ban Sicao.
“How are you here?”
Ban Sicao flicked imaginary ash off his body a few times like a plague ghost.
“I’m here by the Regent Prince’s orders, going to the Prince’s residence to save someone. But this secondary consort—she won’t let go of me, stopping me from going!” Ban Sicao explained, adding a complaint about Shen Yuantang.
Shen Yuantang immediately shouted in anger: “Who asked you to save anyone? Look at you—apprentices in a clinic are older than you! What could you possibly do? I won’t risk my son’s life letting you treat him!”
Ban Sicao was speechless.
“I’ve never seen someone so unreasonable and clueless.”
“Whether I can practice medicine, you’ll know if I treat him!”
“You wasting time here is wasting time for your son’s treatment! If something happens to him, it won’t be anyone’s fault but yours!”
