The wolf pack thundered forward, arriving in the blink of an eye. Green, menacing eyes stretched as far as one could see—endless.

“Master, this pack consists of thirty adult wolves and twenty-five sub-adults. A total of fifty-five!”

Shen Lanxi could know the exact number from Nu Bai, but no one else could, and she couldn’t reveal the figure.

Seeing the dark, overwhelming mass of wolves, everyone panicked, forgetting even their prior plans.

“Pour the wine!”

“Light the fire!”

“Attack the lead wolf!”

Shen Lanxi strode forward, staff in hand. She slammed the long staff against a rock with a loud thump! The sound resonated like a shockwave, instantly pulling everyone’s scattered spirits back into focus.

“If you don’t want to die, move fast!”

“Strong young men, form a circle around the old, weak, and children. Anyone with a weapon, take it up!”

With a single shout, Shen Lanxi’s command rippled through the group. Liu Laohu shook violently, drew his blade, and shouted loudly: “Do as he says! Whatever he orders, do it!”

At this moment, survival was all that mattered.

Chunxue fetched a wine jar and quickly poured some over each woodpile while Qiushuang ignited them. The flames caught immediately.

Wolves are naturally afraid of fire. Seeing the flames, they howled and backed away, crouching low, teeth bared, waiting for an opening.

The firewood on the rocky mountains was limited. Although the flames seemed fierce, they wouldn’t last long. Everyone clutched their fists, silent, eyes scanning the surroundings.

Suddenly, a wolf howled, and the pack charged through a low part of the fire line, heading straight toward the constables.

Shen Lanxi stood in front of the Shen family, slender but resolute. The fire stretched her shadow behind her like an unmovable mountain, guarding those she protected.

The constables, armed with knives, slashed at the charging wolves. More wolves broke through the fire circle. Initially, the prisoners hid behind the constables; when escape was impossible, they grabbed stones and joined the fight.

Shen Yuanjing ran to Shen Lanxi, spreading his arms to shield her.

“Big sister, I’ll protect you!”

Shen Congwen also rushed over: “Lanxi, get behind us!”

“Big sister, the staff!” Shen Yuanjun reached for Shen Lanxi’s staff. He grabbed it but staggered, nearly falling.

The staff felt so heavy! Days without enough food had drained his strength. His big sister could wield it effortlessly—he had no excuse!

The Shen family’s eldest house instantly formed a protective circle around Shen Lanxi.

She glanced at her father and brothers guarding her from all sides, smiled faintly, and took the staff back from Shen Yuanjun.

Shen Yuanjun froze: “Big sister…” He assumed she needed the staff for self-defense. He still had stones!

Just as he bent to grab one, the person at the center—the one being protected—suddenly leapt upward several meters. In the next second, in front of their stunned fathers and brothers, she shot forward like a meteor toward the wolves!

Shen Congwen and his sons: “…”

The whistling and wolf screams erupted. A single long staff cut through the pack like an unstoppable force. Wolves struck were sent flying five to six meters, bones cracking audibly, hitting the ground with a thud and twitching twice before lying still.

The fallen wolves brought a brief, deathly silence.

The remaining wolves all fixed their gaze on her.

Next, Shen Lanxi swung the staff again. Even before anyone could react, a sharp thwack! Another wolf fell.

The pack, enraged, charged her together.

Everyone’s eyes changed. They looked at Shen Lanxi with fear, caution, and awe. Their gazes shifted to the Shen family, seeing them differently now as well.

Shen Lanxi’s long staff moved like lightning. Wolves struck were either dead, flying through the air, or badly wounded. Not a single one remained standing.

The wolves’ mournful howls echoed nearby. Shen Lanxi, holding the staff, radiated strength and cold precision. Though it was a plain wooden staff, it felt like she wielded a sword or spear.

She stepped forward. The surrounding wolves immediately backed away, green eyes fixed on her, maintaining a distance of about five meters.

In the distance, mournful cries rose again.

The pack crouched, whining twice at her, then finally turned and fled.

After the deathly quiet, someone’s stone fell with a clatter. The person holding it trembled violently, as if shocked.

Everyone regained their senses, eyes on Shen Lanxi—fear, caution, and a touch of reverence in their gaze.

Among them, the Shen family was most affected, especially the eldest house.

“Big sister… since when did you become so powerful?” Shen Yuanjing asked in awe.

Shen Congwen immediately scolded: “Call me ‘older brother’!” With so many people around, revealing that the daughter was a girl could cause trouble.

“When did big brother get so strong?” Shen Yuanjun clenched his fists and swallowed hard.

Reluctant to admit it, but undeniable—his sister’s strength was simply too great.

“Father, do you think those wolves are dead?” Shen Yuanqing asked, still trembling.

Shen Congwen shivered at the memory of the bones cracking. They didn’t move anymore; they were probably dead. Surely, they hadn’t just fainted from pain?

Liu Laohu realized just how capable Shen Lanxi really was. Killing wolves was like… killing kittens. She hadn’t even flinched.

“Master Lan, what should we do with the wolves?”

Shen Lanxi hugged the staff: “Kill them for meat, dig a pit to bury them—do as you like.”

Liu Laohu: “…” Master Lan wasn’t just strong—she was generous too.

One wolf’s pelt alone, once prepared, could sell for at least ten taels of silver. He counted—eleven wolves. Even if they only sold the pelts, it was a fortune.

After Shen Lanxi rested, Liu Laohu dared to take the constables to process the wolves:

“Skin them to sell, eat the meat!”

At the mention of meat, all the prisoners instinctively swallowed. So many wolves, and it was hot—they couldn’t store the meat. Surely, they’d get some?

Liu Laohu called a dozen prisoners to help process the meat. Though unspoken, everyone carefully avoided making noise, afraid of disturbing someone’s sleep.

When Shen Lanxi awoke, she immediately smelled the savory aroma of meat.

Others had already begun eating. A small pot for Shen Lanxi still simmered on low heat. Nanny Li added a sprinkle of scallions and served it, letting it cool slightly.

After two consecutive meals with meat, the atmosphere among the prisoners was unprecedentedly harmonious, each face radiating satisfaction.
