“Mom, you nearly scared me to death.”
Ye Jing’s expression was strange—like he was crying and smiling at the same time—but more than anything, it was relief. At last, their whole family could be together again.
“Master, thank you for everything these past years.”
Ye Jun’s hair was completely white. By age, he was already seventy, yet his eyes were sharp, his hearing keen, and his body in excellent health.
“No need to thank me. It was my duty. It’s just that your mother-in-law… I was powerless to help.”
“My mother-in-law—where is she?”
“She’s at the family farm, waiting for you to come home.”
Cheng Qiao nodded and took Cheng Liguo’s hand.
“Dad, come back with me too. You’ve long passed retirement age—it’s time to enjoy your later years.”
Cheng Li grabbed Cheng Liguo’s other hand. As a grandson of the Cheng family, his grandfather’s affairs would be his responsibility from now on.
Cheng Liguo burst into laughter and waved his hand grandly. “Stick with my daughter and I’ll have food to eat; stick with my grandson and I’ll be looked after in old age.”
“Where’s Xiaonuan?”
Cheng Qiao looked around but didn’t see her, feeling puzzled. Cheng Li counted on his fingers—at the earliest, the girl wouldn’t arrive until sometime this morning.
Cheng Li’s estimate was spot on. When Xiaonuan got the call, it was like being struck by lightning. How could her mother have died? She’d received a letter from her just last month!
When she learned that Ye Jing, worried they might neglect their studies, had imitated their mother’s handwriting to write to her, she was so moved that tears streamed down her face. Her older brother, who had always focused on studying medicine, had really stepped up.
Unfortunately, plane tickets weren’t easy to get back then. By the time she traveled day and night to get home, there was only her grandmother, half-reclining in bed.
“Grandma, what’s wrong? Where does it hurt?”
“Xiaonuan’s back. Your grandma can’t move half her body, but she’s much better now.”
Aunt Cuihua looked at the stylish Li Xiaonuan with admiration. This was a girl who knew how to dress—wearing a loose suit, she looked even more slender and graceful.
“Nuannuan’s back. You know about your mom now, right?”
“Grandma, I know. But I believe my mom will be fine. She must have gone through some kind of adventure.”
“That’s what I think too.”
Cuihua smiled and shook her head. If you really believed that, you wouldn’t have been so anxious you ended up paralyzed in bed—but of course, that couldn’t be said out loud.
“Grandma, I’ll change clothes and go look for Mom.”
“No need. Your brother Cheng Li called—they’ll be home any minute now.”
Mother Li smiled, the corners of her mouth lifted high. She knew it—how could her daughter-in-law possibly have died?
“Then I’ll go cook something delicious for them.”
“Go ahead. Your Aunt Lele, your eldest aunt, your cousin, and little Niuniu are all here too.”
Xiaonuan happily ran toward the kitchen. Laughter and cheerful voices soon rang out from inside. For the first time, Xiaonuan met the cousin she had never seen before.
“So you’re Sister Xiaonuan? I’m Li Ying—your cousin.”
Looking at her cousin who closely resembled her eldest aunt, Xiao Nuan stretched out her hand. This girl—back then she had nearly scared Li Chen to death. Huh? Where was Li Chen?
“My brother and my dad are helping with restocking. The little shop is doing well, and Uncle Guoqing and Uncle Xiao Dan aren’t around, so they had no choice but to go carry goods,” she replied.
From the doorway came an earth-shaking crackle of firecrackers, mixed with Wang Zai’s whimpering. Xiao Nuan knew Cheng Qiao was back and shot out like a cannonball.
“Mom! Mom! I missed you so much…”
Cheng Qiao scooped up Li Xiao Nuan who had come charging at her. Luckily she had special abilities—otherwise, getting hit by this girl at full speed would’ve snapped her waist.
“Little girl, do you only have eyes for your mom and not your dad?”
“Dad—you’re back too?!”
No one had told Xiao Nuan that Li Huan had returned as well. She was so overjoyed that she forgot how to smile—tears streamed down her face as she burst into loud sobs.
Her crying made everyone around her tear up too. Shen Ying had originally wanted to go scold Cheng Qiao, but when the mood shifted, her eyes reddened as well.
“Don’t cry—today is a happy occasion. Congratulations to Li Huan’s family on their reunion.”
Chen Weidang and Cuihua were holding firecrackers that hadn’t yet been fully set off, grinning from ear to ear.
“Right, right—today isn’t a day for crying. We should be smiling. Nuan Nuan, take Mom to see your grandma.”
“Okay, Mom—I’ll support you.”
Mother and daughter walked hand in hand to Mother Li’s bedside. Seeing Cheng Qiao, who hadn’t changed at all, Mother Li trembled as she reached out her hand.
“Qiao… is that you? My eyes aren’t so clear anymore—I can’t see well.”
“Mom, it’s me. I’m back. As long as I’m here, I promise your eyesight will be clear and your body healthy.”
“Mom believes you. As long as you and Huan reunite, even if I died right now, I’d be willing.”
“What are you saying? Your grandsons and granddaughters haven’t even married or had children yet—how can you die?”
“That’s right, that’s right. My grandson hasn’t even had kids yet—let’s start with Cheng Li.”
Cheng Li pressed his lips together in a smile. He needed to call Wu Xiaolin and prepare to hold their wedding.
Li Ming and Xiao Gui exchanged smiles. Li Ming planned to make a trip to the capital to meet Xiao Gui’s parents and bring his bride home.
“Nuan Nuan, tell Mom—do you have a partner yet?”
Xiao Nuan glanced at Ye Jing. The twins shared a tacit understanding—Ye Jing lowered his head guiltily. Forgive him; his world only had medicine in it, and he’d forgotten to look for a girlfriend.
Xiao Nuan shook her head too. Forgive her; her world only had design in it, and she’d forgotten to look for a boyfriend.
“The twins are still young. Li Chen is a year older than them and hasn’t found anyone yet either.”
Mother Li immediately spoke up for them. Everyone laughed—indeed, the twins had just turned twenty. There was no rush.
The meal lasted a full three hours before it ended. The children were reluctant to leave Mother Li, Cheng Qiao, and Li Huan, and unanimously demanded to sleep together on one big heated kang that night.
Even Li Chen and Li Ying came to join the fun. Li Chen was grateful to Cheng Qiao and Li Huan, while Li Ying was utterly captivated by the looks of Cheng Qiao, Li Huan, and Cheng Li—she couldn’t take her eyes off them.
“Second Aunt, why don’t I look as good as you? Even if I looked like Dad it’d be fine. Look at my brother—he looks like Dad and he’s handsome.”
Jiang Meili deliberately put on an angry face, picked up a shoe, and pretended she was about to hit Li Ying. Li Chen stopped her—his sister wasn’t wrong. Even if she looked half as much like their dad, she’d be much prettier.
Look at little sister Nuan—what a charming face. Such a pity.
This time Jiang Meili was truly upset. Looks weren’t something she could choose; she also wished her children were both good-looking and smart.
“Li Chen, if you dare spout nonsense again, I’ll beat you. A child shouldn’t despise their mother’s looks—how can you talk about your own mother like that?”
Li Ming stepped forward, glaring fiercely at Li Chen. Li Chen’s face turned awkward; he sneaked a glance at Jiang Meili—I wasn’t the one saying you were ugly.
Li Ming seemed to realize it too and scratched his head awkwardly. Everyone burst out laughing. Taking advantage of the moment, Cheng Qiao inserted her silver needles into Mother Li’s acupoints.
Vast true qi slowly flowed into Mother Li’s meridians, clearing every blockage. Mother Li felt a sudden pain in her body—then the hand that couldn’t move before actually began to move.
