“Xiaolin, come on!”
Xiaonuan saw Wu Xiaolin still clinging to her dad, so she shouted. Wu Xiaolin’s eyes brightened. She glanced at Cheng Li, seeing him also watching her expectantly.
“Dad, can I go?”
“Of course.”
The six children held hands and circled around Mother Li until she covered her eyes, saying she felt dizzy, and they finally stopped.
“Grandma, I missed you so much.”
“Grandma, how is your health?”
The twins held Mother Li’s hands. Ye Jing’s fingers found her pulse, steady and strong—her injury from last time must have healed.
“Master, how have you been?”
Cheng Qiao walked up to Ye Jun, feeling her eyes sting. The black mark under his sternum seemed larger than before—a sign of an old injury acting up.
“Master, have you been overworked lately? Are there still health pills?”
“There are… but… sigh.”
Ye Jun didn’t want to talk. He realized that everyone around him was like a pack of “wolves and tigers,” coming daily asking for pills. He couldn’t understand why the pills were so coveted.
“Don’t worry, Master, there are plenty of health pills.”
Since Cheng Qiao awakened her abilities, her spatial alchemy room seemed to have upgraded. Every time she opened the drawer, the same herbs could produce three layers of elixirs.
“You go with Li Huan to see Old Wu. I’ll take the kids back.”
“Okay, Master.”
Before getting into the car, Cheng Qiao didn’t forget to hug the twins. Ye Jing felt a little awkward, while Xiao Nuan simply wrapped her arms around Cheng Qiao’s neck, wanting to go with her.
“Xiao Nuan, you’re Mommy’s little darling. Mommy and Daddy have something very important to take care of. Can you give us a little time?”
“Okay, but not too long, or I’ll start crying.”
“Mommy promises.”
“Daddy promises too.”
Cheng Qiao and Li Huan got into Wu Jiawei’s car. Wu Xiaolin happily held Cheng Qiao’s hand; she really liked Aunt Cheng—beautiful and gentle.
“They’re here! I’ve been waiting for you for a long time.”
As soon as the car stopped, a loud voice rang out. Cheng Qiao looked straight at Wu Hongxin. Seeing his rosy face and strong presence, she knew he hadn’t skimped on Master’s health pills.
“Master, what are you doing here?”
Li Huan was surprised to see Hu Lata behind Wu Hongxin. Master was supposed to be training in the Qilian Mountains—how did he end up here?
Hu Lata gave Li Huan a sympathetic look. That single glance made Li Huan alert, and Cheng Qiao began to suspect something as well.
The nation was in its early stages, needing all kinds of talent. Li Huan, by fate, had become an awakened individual, so like Mai Sui, he had to undergo strict and harsh specialized training.
“Wife, looks like today’s going to be a banquet of sorts. I’m not hungry. What about you?”
“Alright, let’s go.”
Hand in hand, they prepared to leave. Although there was no car, they could walk down the mountain. Just as they turned, Yao Peng approached.
He shoved a file directly into Li Huan and Cheng Qiao’s hands. Li Huan held it nervously, afraid to open it, but Cheng Qiao was surprised to find that her eyes could see the contents through the cover.
The conditions Yao Peng offered were very tempting: if Li Huan accepted the strict training and joined the special forces upon passing, Ye Chengying would be reinstated.
Additionally, because Cheng Qiao was an invisible awakened operative of a special department, her children would enjoy special privileges, such as bypassing exams straight through university.
Whether in business, politics, or scientific research, as long as it benefited the country, they would receive full support.
What moved Cheng Qiao most was the promise that if any of her and Li Huan’s descendants developed powers, the state would never forcefully recruit them unless they voluntarily joined the special department.
“Wife, I’m afraid to look.”
“Every choice has pros and cons. You decide for yourself.”
Li Huan nodded and finally opened the file. Ye Chengying’s reinstatement mattered—yes, it did. Ye Jun was Ye Chengying’s brother, Cheng Qiao’s Master, and Ye Jing’s grandfather.
The benefits for their children were considerable, especially the last clause: they would remain free individuals, not summoned for any reason.
“Master, can you tell me the truth?”
Hu Lata nodded and led Li Huan into an inner room. When they finally came out—time had passed, though they didn’t know how long—Li Huan’s face showed excitement, but more so reluctance.
“Wife, I want to discuss something with you. I want to train with my Master. The fastest is five years, the slowest… ten years. But I will definitely come back.”
Cheng Qiao nodded. Only through systematic training could Li Huan achieve twice the result with half the effort; otherwise, relying on his own understanding would take an unknown amount of time and energy.
“Go, I’ll wait for you.”
Applause erupted around them. Both Wu Hongxin and Yao Peng had tears in their eyes as they watched this devoted couple, willing to sacrifice their small family for the country.
Wu Jiawei lowered his head. Compared to Li Huan and Cheng Qiao, he was far more selfish—his daughter was only going to Hexi to study; what was there to be reluctant about?
The couple didn’t stay for dinner—they wanted to leave the limited time for their children and Li Huan’s mother. Wu Hongxin and Yao Peng exchanged a look and silently nodded.
Wu Jiawei took the car keys and personally drove Li Huan and Cheng Qiao to their doorstep, but once there, he hesitated.
“Brother, if you have something to say, just say it. Don’t act all timid.”
Wu Jiawei pointed to his own nose and then at Li Huan’s face—really, who looked timid here?
“Xiaolin’s dad, just say what you have to.”
Cheng Qiao stopped Li Huan and looked at Wu Jiawei.
“Li Huan, Cheng Qiao, here’s the thing—I want to arrange a child marriage for you two. If you agree, I’ll pick a date and we’ll have a meal together.”
Originally, he had wanted to wait, since the kids were still young. But with Li Huan leaving, who knew when he’d return? It was best to arrange the engagement now.
“As long as Cheng Li agrees, I have no objections.”
The couple spoke in unison. Wu Jiawei was thrilled—Xiaolin’s mother had long wanted Cheng Li as her son-in-law, and now it was finally happening.
Cheng Li, upon hearing this, sensed a potential problem. Cheng Qiao and Li Huan didn’t intend to hide anything and pulled out the file Yao Peng had given them.
“Dad, Mom, I agree.”
Cheng Li said firmly. As the eldest, if his father had to leave, he must take responsibility for his siblings.
Li Ming blinked, trying hard to hold back his tears. Before, being separated from his parents didn’t hurt much—he knew the family would reunite during holidays.
