Just as she was about to leave, the man lying on the ground spoke:
“Give me the antidote, and I’ll tell you his weakness.”
Cheng Qiao’s steps faltered. She looked at the man on the ground—his pristine white mask had been stained dark brown by the blood seeping from his face.
“Tell me this person’s weakness first. Only then will I give you the antidote. Also, tell me where you’re hiding and whether you have any accomplices.”
A trace of guilt flashed in the man’s eyes, but he shook his head stubbornly. Without the antidote, he wouldn’t speak.
Cheng Qiao let out a cold, amused laugh. Before cultivating, the little red-headed girl’s detox pills could neutralize poison, but now, if she were bitten even once, without producing a single Rebirth Pill, there was basically no saving him.
The Rebirth Pill was too precious; there was no way Cheng Qiao would let a spy have one. Whether he talked or stayed silent, he would die either way. She didn’t care.
The man wanted to hold his ground, but his mind was growing dizzy, and his vision blurred. Realizing he could no longer stall, he finally spoke:
“There were three of us in total. One died on the train, leaving the two of us.”
“You were trying to capture me for experiments?”
The man’s eyes narrowed. How could Cheng Qiao possibly know about such a secret? Could her abilities include foresight? No wonder he had been bitten by a snake—it seemed she had already calculated this.
Desperate but unwilling to give up, the man suddenly spat a stream of silver light from his mouth. The silver light shot straight at Cheng Qiao. She was too close to dodge.
Just as she was about to enter her spatial dimension, a tremendous force pushed her away, sending her crashing heavily into the snow.
“Li Huan…”
Cheng Qiao screamed, watching in horror as the silver light sank into Li Huan’s chest. Ye Xiaolin reacted quickly, loading his gun and shooting at the man on the ground just as Cheng Qiao was pushed away.
The bullet struck the man’s forehead precisely. He collapsed, but a smile appeared on his face as he mumbled a few words:
“Go to hell…”
The man closed his eyes and died, while Li Huan went limp. Cheng Qiao rushed over and, without hesitation, forced a golden Rebirth Pill into his mouth.
The Rebirth Pill dissolved in water. Forced to swallow it, Li Huan’s previously pale face regained color but he still did not wake, remaining motionless as if asleep.
“Li Huan, can you hear me? Please answer me.”
Ye Xiaolin stared in surprise at the health pills, antidotes, and the precious Rebirth Pill Cheng Qiao had in her hands, one by one being stuffed into Li Huan’s mouth.
When the second Rebirth Pill entered Li Huan’s mouth, his eyelids twitched. Then, to Cheng Qiao’s anxious relief, his eyes slowly opened.
“Qiao… don’t worry… I’m fine.”
Seeing Li Huan frown, Cheng Qiao knew he must be in pain. Pressing her fingers to his pulse, she was surprised to find it perfectly normal.
“Li Huan, does it hurt? Where does it hurt?”
“My chest.”
Cheng Qiao closed her eyes, recalling everything that had happened. That silver light had come from the man’s mouth. What exactly was it?
Turning toward the man, she wanted to see what he had on him, but Ye Xiaolin held her back tightly. That man was sinister, and black things had appeared around him that they hadn’t noticed.
Cheng Qiao’s heart tightened. She didn’t know what the black objects were. She threw the poison powder in her hand. No matter what, it contained a concentration of all kinds of deadly toxins.
The poison seemed effective.
The black objects encountered the powder, releasing gray-white smoke. As the smoke thickened, Cheng Qiao scooped Li Huan into her arms and ran toward her home.
Ye Xiaolin had wanted to check the man’s body, but the smoke unnerved him, forcing him to follow Cheng Qiao and retreat quickly.
They didn’t notice a figure that had appeared nearby. If Cheng Qiao had seen him, she would have recognized him immediately—he wore thin, tattered clothing but seemed entirely unbothered by the freezing winter.
“You little girl is indeed talented. No wonder my old man values you. But you actually have a Rebirth Pill in your hands? Well, I won’t be polite then.”
Hu Lata pulled a porcelain bottle from his ragged coat, held his breath, removed the stopper, and poured the liquid over the man on the ground.
Soon, the man’s corpse spontaneously ignited, the black smoke from the flames stinking horribly. Hu Lata couldn’t help himself, moving his hands and feet swiftly.
The surrounding snow seemed alive, swirling and attacking the spreading black smoke.
At first, the black smoke dominated. Gradually, as it mixed with the snow, it became heavier and rose more slowly.
Finally, the black smoke was completely covered by the snow, the stench in the air greatly reduced, leaving only a human-shaped black pit on the ground.
Hu Lata stepped forward. His cracked shoes circled the pit, leaving large footprints with each step. Miraculously, as the footprints connected, the human-shaped pit disappeared.
He sat down slowly under a large tree. He was exhausted; to completely eliminate that creature, his spiritual energy had been drained. Too bad—it would have to be replenished from Cheng Qiao.
Hu Lata dared not close his eyes to cultivate; there was another supernatural user in the mountains whose power was not low. During the fight, he had been frightened by Cheng Qiao’s move and had not yet unlocked his full potential.
Thinking this, Hu Lata shook his head in frustration and ran toward Cheng Qiao’s home. Today he had finally witnessed the girl’s combat abilities. Too weak—he would have to protect her up close.
Cheng Qiao carried Li Huan into the bedroom. His body was cramping from pain, and the healthy color he had regained earlier had turned pale again. He was clearly suffering.
“Qiao, don’t touch me. It hurts.”
Cheng Qiao shook her head, went outside, brought in a lot of firewood, and stoked the fire. The kang warmed instantly, then she carefully began removing Li Huan’s clothing.
Once Li Huan’s shirt was off, not only Cheng Qiao, but even Ye Xiaolin was shocked—his entire chest was blackened. He had been poisoned.
“If it’s poisoning, why can’t I detect the poison meridian, and why don’t the antidotes work? If it’s not poisoning, what exactly did the spy do?”
Cheng Qiao was puzzled and frustrated to the point of tears. She missed Ye Jun. Even if he couldn’t explain everything, he would always know a solution.
Ye Xiaolin shook his head mechanically. No wonder General Yao Peng said that supernatural users were terrifying—you could only ally with them, not offend them. Otherwise, a powerful supernatural user could destroy an entire region alone.
