Jiang Meili: “……”
Is this supposed to be a pleasant surprise or a terrifying shock?
“Chengcheng, you’re going to have a little uncle. Are you happy?”
Yuan Qin, seeing his grandson come out, scooped him up and asked cheerfully. The child didn’t really understand anything, so he simply nodded happily, which made Yuan Qin beam with joy.
“Mom, you… are you… pregnant?”
Meili glanced at Yuan Qin’s belly and asked cautiously. Seeing Yuan Qin nod, she hesitated. This child had come too late—she wasn’t sure if it could be kept.
“Mom, you should… I think…”
Meili suddenly found herself at a loss for words. Anything she said seemed wrong. If she upset Yuan Qin, something unexpected might happen.
Suddenly, an idea struck her, and she suggested to Yuan Qin: “Mom, why don’t we let Cheng Qiao check your pulse? If the child is fine, we can keep it; if not…”
“Nonsense! What’s Cheng Qiao supposed to know? Why should she decide if my child is healthy? Meili, you’re already a mother, how can you still be so naive?”
Yuan Qin poked Meili’s head with her finger, barely able to contain her anger. How could she give birth to such a fool? She clearly outshone her but had no idea.
Chengcheng, seeing his grandmother bullying his mother, immediately stepped in front of Meili, pointing at Yuan Qin’s belly and shouting, “Grandma is mean! She’s bullying Mom! I don’t want a little uncle anymore!”
Hearing this from her young grandson, Yuan Qin felt a pang of heartache. Her little grandchild, so young, could already turn against her—who knew if he would recognize her as his grandmother when he grew up?
After all, other people’s children are still other people’s children. No matter how many more children Meili had, their surnames wouldn’t change the fact—they wouldn’t be her own flesh and blood.
With that in mind, Yuan Qin’s determination to have this child only grew stronger. She held her belly and slowly stood up, leaving without looking back.
Meili panicked and hurried to find Jiang Hua. Jiang Hua, with no solution, could only go to Li Bing, hoping he could contact Cheng Qiao to help check the pulse.
Cheng Qiao, looking at the two anxious faces in front of her, refused without hesitation. Yuan Qin was hostile toward her—only a fool would help check her pulse. If it turned out well, she’d get no credit; if it turned out poorly, it would all be her fault.
“So what do we do? Cheng Qiao, do you think the child can be kept?”
Cheng Qiao opened her mouth, wanting to say: “She’s already quite old. Even if the child is healthy, by the time it grows up, she’ll be in her sixties or seventies. And for older mothers, a child being fine is already lucky. Even a slight genetic mutation could result in a deformity or intellectual disability. Then no one would know what to do.”
But she swallowed the words. She already had four sons and a daughter. Although Xuhui wasn’t her biological son, he was almost the same as one.
So she had no right to comment on whether the child should be kept. Li Bing understood her concern and decided to ask Jiang Hua to seek help from Shen Sanleng.
But Shen Sanleng was extremely busy and had little time for Yuan Qin, especially since his impression of her was not good—he would be even less willing to intervene.
“Then, let’s ask Dr. Zhu.”
“Which Dr. Zhu?”
Jiang Hua was puzzled. He knew all the good doctors by name—Shen Sanleng, Ye Jun—but he had never heard of Dr. Zhu.
“Do you remember the famous Zhu pharmacy in Shanghai? The shop had Master Zhu as the head. The Zhu family’s lineage was thin. By the time it passed to Zhu Qingde, he was the last heir of the family—a rare scion.”
“Oh, I remember now. That young master, right? I heard he was a bit of a playboy, but his medical skills were quite competent.”
“That’s him. Dr. Zhu has also been invited by Director Shen to teach here.”
“Good. Let’s invite him. Tomorrow, we’ll have Dr. Zhu come to our house. I’ll bring mother, and he can check her pulse. Actually, Li Bing, I also want this child. You know what it’s like not to have a son.”
Li Bing nodded. His own younger brother had three sons, making him the envy of Xiangyang Village—showing how important having a son was.
Li Bing went to find Zhu Qingde. He was sitting in the newly completed health clinic, drinking tea. The clinic was solidly built from thick wood and bricks.
A signboard above the entrance read: “Liangzhou Traditional Medicine Health Clinic” in bright red letters on a black background.
Inside was a large hall. In the center was a square-shaped registration desk with four chairs for the staff. To the left and right of the desk were the medicine dispensing and payment areas, and facing the entrance were several consultation rooms labeled Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Orthopedics.
The second floor had gynecology and obstetrics, as well as five wards for inpatients. Though few in number, they could accommodate over a dozen patients.
Zhu Qingde specialized in internal medicine and gynecology. Cheng Qiao didn’t let him do heavy work; he was just waiting here to receive supplies. Ye Jun had told her that all equipment was already loaded on trucks and on its way.
With nothing to do, Zhu Qingde was reading the newspaper. Li Bing rushed in and whispered a few words in his ear.
“What? Your mother-in-law is pregnant? How old is she?”
Li Bing blushed. At her age, pregnancy was a bit awkward to mention. But he and Zhu Qingde were good friends, so he spoke freely.
“Dr. Zhu, sorry to trouble you. Could you check her pulse and see if this child can be kept?”
“Don’t you have Cheng Qiao at home? As far as I know, her medical skills far surpass mine. Why come to me?”
“Ah, it’s just that my mother-in-law is jealous. She feels Cheng Qiao has overshadowed her daughter’s position as the eldest son’s wife. And Cheng Qiao is indeed stronger than my wife, so she feels uncomfortable.”
“Hmm… well, your wife isn’t bad either, but Cheng Qiao is so exceptional that being outshone is normal. Even a man like me is outshone. Did I say too much?”
Li Bing nodded. Cheng Qiao was indeed remarkable—she had even saved his life. What else was there to say? Suddenly, Zhu Qingde grabbed Li Bing’s wrist, startling him. He almost reflexively retaliated.
“Ouch! Let go! I just want to check your pulse.”
“You should have said so earlier! Never grab a soldier by surprise—we react instinctively.”
Realizing Zhu Qingde wanted to check his pulse, Li Bing immediately relaxed, sweating from the scare. He had thought he was being attacked.
