“He Fei, where’s your camera? Take it out already.”
He Fei nodded repeatedly, took out her camera, aimed it at the medicinal porridge, and clicked away. She photographed the porridge, the waitstaff, and the dining hall—carefully avoiding Cheng Qiao.
Ye Chengying, Ye Jun, and Cheng Ligui also sat down to sample the various flavors of medicinal porridge. Ye Jun and Cheng Ligui were already used to the taste of the spirit water and even found the porridge lacking in spiritual energy.
Ye Chengying, however, could taste the differences in the porridge. During this period, Ye Jun had been calculating the timing to mail him health-preserving pills, instructing him to take one each week.
“Xiao Jun, check my pulse.”
Ye Jun nodded. His long fingers rested on Ye Chengying’s wrist, then he switched hands and nodded in satisfaction. When his disciple took action, there was no illness that couldn’t be cured.
Seeing Ye Jun’s smile, Ye Chengying knew there was nothing wrong with his health. Ever since he started taking the health pills Ye Jun sent, the old injuries from years ago had been slowly recovering.
In the past, whenever the wind picked up, it rained, or the weather changed, his chest would feel tight and he couldn’t breathe properly. When it was severe, he even needed oxygen. But after taking the pills, these symptoms had improved noticeably.
Just as he was about to say something, Wang Ling arrived with Wu Jiawei and Wu Xiaolin. The moment Wu Xiaolin entered the dining hall, she started looking for Cheng Qiao. Spotting her sitting with two women, she ran over without hesitation and sweetly called out, “Auntie.”
The moment He Fei saw Wu Xiaolin, she remembered what her father-in-law had said. Her nerves immediately tensed, and she realized that Wu Xiaolin was prettier than her own Xiaogui.
After eating and drinking their fill, Xiaogui and Xiao’an also ran over. The two girls stood side by side—similar in height and build—but Xiaogui was clearly outmatched.
Wu Xiaolin had a distinct little-princess aura. That temperament gave her a huge advantage, making people feel that this child came from an extraordinary background.
Xiaogui, on the other hand, carried the aura of a soldier’s descendant. Though she looked quite delicate, overall she was still overshadowed by Wu Xiaolin. Wang Ling felt relieved and walked over with a smile to greet them.
Cheng Qiao calmly introduced everyone to one another. When He Fei and Wang Ling shook hands, there was obvious hostility between them. Even Hui Di looked at Wang Ling with a guarded expression.
Cheng Qiao smiled helplessly. Her Xiao Chengli was only eight years old, okay? What if he grew up and liked some other girl—wouldn’t all this be for nothing?
The group seemed to realize this as well, and the atmosphere finally eased. Cheng Qiao took Wang Ling and Wu Xiaolin to a neighboring table and asked the server to bring them medicinal porridge.
Wang Ling and Wu Xiaolin loved the taste. Remembering the old master’s instructions, Wang Ling asked the server to sell her a few extra portions to take away.
The server politely refused. Their porridge was for dine-in only and could not be taken out. If anyone was found secretly taking it away, that customer would be put on the medicinal hall’s blacklist.
Only then did Wang Ling notice the shop rules posted on the wall in large, beautiful characters. Embarrassed, she asked the server to bring two more bowls—it was just too delicious.
The server refused again. Although the medicinal porridge was tasty, it contained medicinal ingredients, and overeating was not advisable. Wang Ling glanced at the porridge on He Fei’s table and saw that each variety had only one bowl, and none had been replenished after finishing.
As for Wu Jiawei, he naturally went to greet Ye Chengying. Being a civilian official, there was no need for him to confront Ye Chengying head-on. But thinking of his brothers’ futures, he steeled himself and walked over anyway.
Ye Chengying was very courteous to Wu Jiawei. They exchanged a few words about work and daily life. Ye Chengying even mentioned Old Master Wu specifically, expressing his deep admiration.
Wu Jiawei gave a bitter smile. If that were truly the case, you wouldn’t be competing with my family’s old man for people. But considering the backing behind Ye Chengying, he held his tongue.
That old fellow was just like his own father—both stubborn mules who would go down one road to the very end. When they were young, they competed in marksmanship, endurance, and combat ability.
In old age, they competed even more—health, children and grandchildren, contributions—anything they could compare, they did. Now that they’d discovered Ye Jun’s disciple might have special abilities, the old master was sure to fight for it. He’d even used his six-year-old granddaughter—clearly someone who would never give up until he achieved his goal. Who would’ve thought Ye Chengying also had a granddaughter? Sigh… this was troublesome.
After finishing the medicinal porridge, Wu Jiawei also felt subtle changes in his body. He’d been so busy lately that he was completely exhausted mentally.
But after one bowl, he seemed to perk up. Upon learning the shop rules, he cooperated fully and had someone go fetch the old master down from the mountain.
However, seeing how crowded the shop was, it would be unsafe for the old master to appear here. So he wanted to discuss with Cheng Qiao whether they could go to the siheyuan instead—the old master was craving the medicinal porridge.
Cheng Qiao readily agreed. Ye Chengying’s former superior would also be heading to the siheyuan later. She needed to rush back to cook porridge first and brought the children along as well. There were too many people here, and if any child got lost again, it would be disastrous.
When Wang Ling learned that her father-in-law was going to the siheyuan, she quickly took Wu Xiaolin along too. Hui Di and He Fei were a bit unhappy, but since Cheng Qiao didn’t say anything, they could only endure it.
On the way back, Cheng Ligui called Xu Hui over and formally introduced Ye Chengying to him. Xu Hui was thrilled—he had thought he’d need to get into university before meeting someone like Ye Chengying, yet here he was already.
Ye Chengying was even happier. The country needed talent, and he was willing to cultivate outstanding individuals for it. Li Huan and Cheng Qiao were a pair he valued greatly, and now there was one more—Xu Hui. Wonderful.
As evening approached, Wu Hongxin arrived. Ye Jun and Ye Chengying stood at the gate of the siheyuan to welcome this old general with illustrious merits.
“Little Ying, you finally came.”
“Uncle Wu, long time no see. You’re in great health.”
“Great my ass. Let Cheng Qiao come to me, and then I’ll really be great.”
Ye Chengying: “……”
“Shameless old man—at your age and still coveting a young girl. The older you get, the less you resemble a decent person.”
An aged voice came from behind. Ye Chengying hurried forward, supporting the newcomer by the arm. Wu Hongxin turned around, saw who it was, and cursed:
“You old bastard, how come you’re everywhere? Still not done fighting after a lifetime?”
“Chief, you’re here—please, come in.”
Ye Chengying was feeling awkward when his savior arrived—his former superior, Yao Peng. Not only did he relieve Ye Chengying’s predicament, he also scolded Wu Hongxin.
The group finally entered the large living room. Several bowls of slightly warm medicinal porridge were already on the table. The two old men were indeed hungry and were just about to pick up their bowls when several medical staff walked in.
