The two men woke up groggily, still not knowing what had happened. But within a minute, both of them reacted—Wu Shangen had actually taken the two of them down.
“Damn it, that Wu Shangen—how did he unlock his handcuffs by himself?”
“Where is that bastard? I’m going to get my revenge!”
“He collapsed unconscious at the entrance. We’ve already called a doctor. But the strange thing is, he clearly could’ve escaped—so why did he pass out right at the gate of the Public Security Bureau?”
In the end, Wu Shangen was carried into an ambulance and sent to the hospital. After a full round of examinations, it turned out that all four of his limbs seemed unable to move, and there also appeared to be a problem with his vocal cords.
“Mute—and crippled.”
The doctor shook his head and left. They didn’t have the ability to treat this man anyway—besides, he was a criminal.
At this point, everyone could clearly sense that something was wrong. Perhaps Wu Fan really had died from pain, and Wu Shangen had obviously gone out to seek revenge. They just didn’t know who the target of that revenge had been.
The prison warden reported the matter up the chain. When Wu Hongxin received the news, he fell completely silent. He naturally had an answer in his heart—back then, the Ye family had been ruined by the Wu family.
“Wu Fan was strangled to death by Wu Shangen himself?”
“Yes, Chief.”
“And Wu Shangen suddenly lost the ability to speak, and his limbs suddenly lost all sensation?”
The guard commander nodded. He watched as Wu Hongxin’s index finger tapped lightly on the tabletop—once, then again. The sound was soft, yet it felt as if it were striking his heart, making him suddenly nervous.
“Who was the last person Wu Shangen came into contact with?”
“Two interrogators. They said they hadn’t even sat down before Wu Shangen attacked them. It happened so fast they couldn’t defend against it.”
Wu Hongxin nodded. The Wu family had always been a martial family; it was normal for them to have some skills. If Wu Fan hadn’t been so desperate to have a child and made that fatal mistake, he would still be nothing more than a small deputy battalion commander in the military region.
“It looks like the Wu family line has been wiped out.”
The guard commander nodded. No one knew why, but the Wu family had always passed down through a single line. By the time it reached Wu Fan’s generation, he couldn’t even have children.
“Chief, do you have any suspects?”
Wu Hongxin glanced at the guard commander who had followed him for more than a decade. He wanted to nod, but in the end he only shook his head slightly. The old saying held true—without investigation, there is no right to speak.
“Have people keep an eye on the major hospitals in the capital, especially doctors with exceptional medical skills. Be extremely careful in your inquiries—don’t let them notice.”
The guard commander’s heart tightened. A name surfaced in his mind: Ye Jun. Someone capable of killing without sound or trace—only Ye Jun fit the bill.
“Prepare the car. My legs haven’t been feeling well these past two days—take me to see Ye Jun.”
“Chief, you…”
The guard commander froze. There were dedicated doctors up in the mountains—why go out of the way? Besides, although Ye Jun practiced traditional medicine, he used bold prescriptions. That wasn’t something Wu Hongxin usually tolerated.
Wu Hongxin waved his hand. He needed to find out whether this had been done by Ye Jun or by Cheng Qiao. He had always had a feeling that those incredibly effective medicinal pills appearing around Ye Jun were actually made by Cheng Qiao.
It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Ye Jun. He and Ye Jun’s elders were of the same generation, and he naturally knew what the Ye family possessed. Even if Ye Jun had grown over the past decade, it was impossible for him to have reached this level on his own.
That left only one person worth suspecting—Cheng Qiao. Yet Cheng Qiao’s background was perfectly clean, and Cheng Liguo had even been sent down to a bitter, freezing region because of Zhao Min.
What was puzzling, though, was that Cheng Liguo hadn’t suffered hardship there at all. He was constantly receiving large parcels—packages containing food, drink, clothing, and daily necessities. Every single item was of exquisite quality.
Cheng Qiao was just a small educated youth. In Xiangyang Village, she was originally considered light labor; being able to support herself was already impressive. How could she possibly have the means to support her father as well?
Even if her biological mother had secretly left her money, in an era of material scarcity, where could she have obtained all these things for her father?
What’s more, she still had so many children to raise. Don’t tell him it was Li Huan, that punk, secretly speculating and helping Cheng Qiao on the side. Just based on Li Huan alone, how could he have accumulated so many supplies in such a short time?
Wu Xiaolin stayed at Ye Jun’s house for several days and still didn’t want to go home. Cheng Qiao’s children were simply too lovable—not only good-looking and smart, but they also played well with her and were all little powerhouses.
Take Xiao Nuan, for example. She was tiny, yet she could lift an entire bucket of water by herself without any adult’s help. Wu Xiaolin tried it once herself—and failed.
Then there was Li Ming. According to feedback from the kindergarten teachers, the child’s strength was astonishing. Not only could he help teachers manage the children, he could even move items that female teachers couldn’t lift. That wasn’t normal.
Having stayed by Wu Hongxin’s side for so many years, the guard commander understood some of his thoughts. He turned and left, arranging not only the vehicle but also covert protection.
Wu Hongxin walked to Wu Shangen’s bedside. Seeing the once-spirited face now mottled with bruised purple, and the resentment still lingering in his eyes, he couldn’t help but shake his head.
Wu Shangen didn’t notice the people standing by the bed at all. His eyes were fixed on the hospital ceiling, hatred filling the air. Unfortunately, he knew he was about to die.
He was unwilling. So many years of scheming, so many people turned into unjust souls at his hands—but he had gained plenty from it. Gold-filled rooms, silver-filled rooms. Just a little more time, and he could have taken it all and flown far away.
But fate played its tricks. At the critical moment, everything changed. His hidden wealth vanished into nothingness, and even the Wu family was about to be uprooted entirely.
And Ye Jun—what brilliant methods you have. Dying at your hands is nothing to complain about. Wu Shangen’s mind replayed the moment at the entrance of the courtyard, when Ye Jun had looked at him with that mocking gaze. His heart began to spasm uncontrollably.
So they had been prepared all along—first dealing with Wu Fan, then waiting for him. How laughable that he had truly walked right into the trap.
“Have you admitted defeat?”
Lost in thought, Wu Shangen was startled badly by Wu Hongxin’s voice. With no strength left in his body, he struggled to turn his head and look at him.
“Have you admitted defeat? A man must recognize the situation. You’ve already reached a dead end—there’s no need for futile struggle.”
Wu Shangen felt a lump in his throat, yet he couldn’t deny it. He gave Wu Hongxin a look, signaling him to hurry up and end it—staying alive was nothing but suffering.
“I’m going to ask you a few questions. I know you can’t speak anymore. Nod or blink once for ‘yes.’ If it’s ‘no,’ don’t respond.”
Wu Shangen felt a surge of joy. He knew Wu Hongxin too well—a man wholly devoted to the country and the people. If Ye Jun and Cheng Qiao fell into his hands, they would never have freedom again.
