“Xiao Bei, you finally came! Quick, quick, quick—put on your work uniform! We’re all going to be swamped!”
Xiao Zhen was the first salesperson recruited by Qijun’s clothing store, so she had some familiarity with the Zhao family. Seeing Xiao Bei walk in, she immediately handed her a work uniform.
Zhao Xiaobei smiled and nodded, heading to the changing room to put it on. Zhao Xiaobao, thinking it wasn’t his business, turned to leave. But he hadn’t gone far when two more girls entered the store.
Zhao Ying and Zhao Jing arrived at Qijun’s clothing store. Their eyes lit up with greed as they looked at the wool dresses hanging on the wall—fashionable designs made from fine materials.
“Hey, take this dress down. I want to try it on.”
Zhao Jing commanded Xiao Zhen, who was busy nearby, in a bossy tone.
Xiao Zhen frowned slightly. She still had other customers to attend to, but she explained politely: “the dress was made of wool, and it could only be taken down if they were certain about buying it; otherwise, trying it on might damage it.”
“Of course I’m buying it! Take it down!”
Xiao Zhen nodded. The shop owner had said not to judge people by appearances. Although these two girls were dressed plainly, it didn’t mean they didn’t have money.
For example, Zhao Qijun’s cousin Cheng Qiao looked ordinary in her clothes, yet she owned an entire siheyuan (courtyard house). Maintaining such a property cost a fortune.
Finally, Zhao Jing and Zhao Ying got to wear the wool dresses. Standing before the large mirror, they admired themselves—the dresses changed their whole aura, making them extremely satisfied.
“We’ll take these two dresses. Wrap up our clothes.”
Xiao Zhen felt delighted—selling two dresses worth 120 yuan each meant she could earn six yuan in commission. How wonderful!
However, when she saw Zhao Ying and Zhao Jing preparing to leave with their old clothes without paying, she couldn’t help but call out: “Hey, you two girls, pay for your clothes!”
“Pay? Pay what? Do you know whose store this is? It’s my cousin Zhao Qijun’s!”
Xiao Zhen paused, then smiled knowingly. Seeing Xiao Zhen smile, Zhao Jing smiled too, thinking she was clever.
“My boss said that Qijun only has one cousin named Cheng Qiao, and a cousin pair named Zhao Xiaobao and Zhao Xiaobei. She has no other siblings.”
Zhao Jing’s eyes widened. Zhao Qijun—this money-losing girl—actually dared to not acknowledge them as her cousins. But there was nothing she could do, so she looked at Zhao Ying.
Zhao Ying frowned. There was a school event next week, and the two sisters had nothing suitable to wear, so they had come here to look.
The wool dresses looked so beautiful on them—soft and delicate. At the event, they would definitely attract attention.
“We really are Zhao Qijun’s cousins. My dad is her father’s cousin. We’re her cousins.”
“I don’t care about any cousin business. Last time Cheng Qiao and Zhao Xiaobei bought clothes, the owner said no payment was needed. They still paid. You two should pay too.”
Sensing trouble, Zhao Ying tried to push past the salesperson to escape. But Zhao Xiaobei stood in her way, smiling—though her smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Xiao Bei, are you buying clothes too?”
Zhao Xiaobei didn’t answer but held out her hand: “One hundred twenty. Pay up.”
Only then did Zhao Ying notice Zhao Xiaobei’s clothes, widening her eyes. This money-losing girl had actually become a salesperson at Qijun’s clothing store.
An idea popped into her head: “Bei Bei, if you work here, maybe I can work here too, and the wages could cover the dress.”
“I can’t decide that. Either pay for your clothes or take them off. Don’t waste my time.”
Zhao Jing was furious. From behind, she grabbed Zhao Xiaobei’s hair and yanked hard. Zhao Xiaobei’s scalp ached, and she fell to the ground in pain.
Seeing this, Zhao Ying turned to run. The two salespeople ignored her and grabbed Zhao Jing’s arms, pinching hard. The pain made Zhao Jing release Zhao Xiaobei.
“Call the police! Someone is snatching clothes!”
Other customers couldn’t stand it—the sisters were not only stealing clothes but also fighting. Who gave them the audacity?
Hearing the mention of police, Zhao Jing panicked. She broke free and tried to flee, but at that moment, Zhao Qijun walked in, having parked her bicycle.
“Qijun, stop her!”
Zhao Xiaobei rubbed her head and struggled to stand.
“What’s going on?”
“Big sister, I just wore a dress from your store, and look—Bei Bei was hit and scolded. My hands were pinched until they bled.”
Zhao Jing also wanted to run but was held by the two salespeople. She shifted the blame entirely onto Zhao Xiaobei.
“Have you paid for the clothes on your body?”
Zhao Qijun asked coldly.
“I have no money. I already said I’m your cousin, but they wouldn’t believe me.”
Zhao Qijun couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity. No money, yet so audacious to take clothes! She glanced at Xiao Zhen: “Xiao Zhen, go call the police. Someone’s stealing clothes and hitting people.”
“Zhao Qijun, don’t forget you’re a Zhao! What good would calling the police do?”
“Lots. First, you might be expelled from school. Second, to serve as a warning. Third… well, I haven’t thought of it yet, but there will definitely be more consequences.”
The other salesperson, Xiao Qing, held Zhao Jing tightly while Xiao Zhen went to report to the police. Zhao Ying returned to block her.
“Qijun, don’t call the police. There’s a school event next week. We need these outfits. Since we’re relatives, can we just write an IOU?”
“I can agree to that. After all, we are relatives—even if we weren’t, this would be the first and last time. Write the IOU—but include interest.”
“You…”
“You what? Will you write it or not?”
Zhao Ying had no choice but to write the IOU. When it was her turn to get Zhao Jing’s signature, Zhao Jing shoved her aside:
“Are you even my sister? You only think of hiding yourself and leaving me behind. I fought for you, and now you want me to sign? Forget it!”
Zhao Ying was speechless. True, she couldn’t have escaped without Zhao Jing pulling Xiao Bei’s hair. But she had returned—besides, each of them was taking one dress. Why should she pay for both?
“Sign it or not? If not, I’ll just write mine. And when Qijun calls the police, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
From this moment, the sisters’ relationship was completely fractured. Zhao Qijun and Zhao Xiaobei exchanged a glance, silently shaking their heads.
