RYEY -Chapter 298 Justice Over Family

“Huanzai, you go report this to the police. I’ll go check on Daniu—I’m worried they’re in danger.”

The two of them each rode a bicycle. Passing by the police station, Chen Weidang didn’t stop; he headed straight for his eldest daughter’s home.

Li Huan immediately understood Chen Weidang’s intention. The one who had truly ruined Chen Damao so miserably was Daniu, because she had directly destroyed Damao’s future. That was why Chen Damao was trying to kill Daniu.

“Hurry, someone’s going to kill someone!”

Huanzai rushed into the police station, shouting loudly. Everyone at the station knew Li Huan, and seeing his panic, they quickly got up and followed him to respond.

A gunshot rang out with a “bang,” nearly scaring Li Huan and the two on-duty officers. They watched in shock as Chen Weidang fired at a man ahead of him.

“Dad, you…”

Chen Damao’s vest had a large hole from the shotgun blast, yet he stubbornly turned his head. When he saw it was Chen Weidang, the last of his defiance finally faded.

The police officers exchanged glances, reached an unspoken agreement, and tackled Chen Weidang together—one snatched the shotgun from his hands, the other pulled out handcuffs to restrain him. Chen Weidang didn’t resist at all.

Li Huan rushed over to Chen Damao. Damao’s chest had a huge hole from the shotgun blast; he lay on his back, eyes wide open, unwilling to die peacefully.

Seeing the matches and kerosene on the ground, it became clear: Chen Damao had actually tried to burn Daniu and her entire family alive. This was utterly despicable.

The commotion outside woke Daniu’s family. Daniu hurriedly put on clothes and stepped outside, only to see Damao dead at their doorstep. She couldn’t help but gape.

“Dad, what happened?”

“Daniu… live a good life. I did this for justice—even if it’s against my own kin.”

Seeing Chen Weidang being taken away by the police without explanation, Daniu was desperate. But then her husband’s voice brought her back to focus:

“Dad, whatever’s going on, just tell me. Otherwise, I’ll be completely in the dark and at a disadvantage.”

“Tang Wei, treat my daughter well, or I won’t let you off.”

Tang Wei, Daniu’s husband, frowned slightly. He looked at Li Huan, who sighed and briefly explained what had happened.

Tang Wei nodded. He remembered that when his wife reported the corruption in Chuncheng, he had scolded Daniu for not handling it quietly at home, instead risking someone’s livelihood.

Daniu had been furious, calling him a protector of criminals. Chen Damao had been so outrageous, willing to abandon parental bonds and his first wife for fame and fortune. How could such a man be trusted with responsibility?

Tang Wei didn’t argue. He thought, if he were Damao, he would have acted the exact opposite—cherishing his parents and wife, knowing without their support, how could he rise?

“Wife, Dad might go to prison. We might get into trouble too.”

“What? Prison? Why? And what trouble would we have?”

“Dad killed someone. Our reputations will be ruined too, so…”

Li Huan nodded. Daniu probably wouldn’t be able to keep her job—no one wanted such a blunt person as a colleague. Tang Wei might also be unable to continue working.

Sure enough, the house lights came on. Tang Wei’s parents and several brothers and sisters-in-law came out. Seeing a mangled body at their doorstep, they screamed in terror.

The screams drew the neighbors, and soon a crowd gathered. Seeing uniformed police officers, their courage returned.

When Tang Wei’s mother learned that Damao had tried to burn their house, every member of the Tang family looked horrified. A house set ablaze at midnight, with added kerosene—none of them would have escaped.

“Daniu, you should move out. With you here, this house is terrifying.”

Tang Wei’s mother glared at him and openly told them to leave. Daniu was stunned, unsure how to respond. Tang Wei nodded—moving out was long overdue after all these years of injustice.

“Mother, how can you—”

Daniu protested. Every month she gave Tang Wei’s mother twenty yuan—how could four people survive on that? Yet she complained as if she were losing out. She couldn’t stand this mother-in-law.

“Daniu, sell your job, go back home to farm. Huan, I’m asking a favor—take Tang Wei with you. He’s a good man.”

Chen Weidang spoke again—this was likely his final request to Huanzai.

Li Huan nodded. The group at Shouhou Village needed people; Tang Wei would fit right in. Daniu could return to the village—farming would give her work points, and being diligent, she could support herself.

Chen Weidang was taken away. Soon, the hospital sent an ambulance to carry Chen Damao away. He would need a forensic examination before burial, but besides Gao Xiaohui, no one would likely visit.

“Daniu, get ready. In the village, there’s only Aunt Cuihua and Xiaoniu left. I’m going to the hospital to check.”

Daniu nodded, then turned to glare coldly at Tang Wei’s mother. She could leave, but only after securing the family division documents; otherwise, she would get nothing and still have to share household expenses.

Tang Wei’s father nodded. It was time to divide the family—he had three sons and two daughters; the daughters had married, so it was best to separate cleanly.

Tang Wei’s mother was anxious. She despised Daniu, who counted everything meticulously. Spending a little more shouldn’t matter—she was a full-time worker at the supply and marketing cooperative.

Sometimes, when her daughters were short on money and wanted to buy on credit, she would snatch the items back, ridiculing them for being unable to afford them. Over time, Daniu’s words grew harsher, and her daughters began to resent her, turning the relationship into open hostility. The mother-in-law also joined in.

Tang Wei, the youngest son, had once been his mother’s favorite, but Daniu’s presence had strained their relationship, leaving him caught in the middle.

Now, given this opportunity, Tang Wei agreed without hesitation to divide the family. He had long weighed the pros and cons—his siblings and sisters-in-law were difficult, leaving him no benefit at home.

But Daniu’s family was different. Leaving aside Damao, Ermao could become the village accountant. More importantly, the Chen family had a good relationship with Li Huan—following Li Huan meant food on the table. Tang Wei wanted to try that.

He had never imagined that today he would follow Li Huan in this way. Thinking of his own work—after all these years still a temp—he thought, if it doesn’t work out, he could just quit.

The couple exchanged glances, understanding each other’s thoughts. They entered the house and shut the door. If they were dividing the family, they would do it clearly. Once prosperous, no one could stick around to mooch.
