Li Huan accepted the envelope without the slightest hesitation. The woodshed had been wrecked, one of his teeth had been knocked out, and his head was still buzzing. This money could be considered compensation.
Seeing how sensible Li Huan was, the man took out a pen and wrote his name and military district address on the envelope, telling him to come find him sometime for another spar. After all, Li Huan was the first opponent in his life with whom he’d fought to a draw.
Cheng Qiao was a little dazed. The man had come quickly and left just as fast. That woman called Juanjuan hadn’t even had time to react before she was dragged away.
After they had gone far, Ye Jun looked at Cheng Qiao with a smile and asked, “So it really is blocked fallopian tubes?”
Cheng Qiao nodded. That woman named Juanjuan’s pulse had shown exactly that—unless her own medical skills were lacking and she’d misread it.
“But that man truly is infertile. He definitely won’t have children in this lifetime.”
Ye Jun said regretfully, though there was a trace of mockery in his eyes. He had already seen the man’s name just now—Wu Fan. So he was from the Wu family. No wonder he’d looked somewhat familiar.
One had to know that the Wu family and the Ye family were mortal enemies. If it weren’t for Wu Fan’s father, Wu Yong, the Ye family wouldn’t have had to flee overseas to escape disaster, and Ye Jun himself wouldn’t have ended up here either—it was all thanks to the Wu family.
“Master, does the Wu family have a grudge against our Ye family?” Cheng Qiao asked.
Ye Jun froze for a moment. What had Cheng Qiao just said? Our Ye family? She had actually come to truly regard herself as part of the Ye family.
Seeing the excitement on her master’s face, Cheng Qiao couldn’t help feeling a little guilty. Her master had taught her everything he knew in his lifetime, yet there were still many things she had kept hidden from him.
“Master, I want to tell you something.”
“No need,” Ye Jun said. “Master already knows. Being able to take you as my disciple in this lifetime is a blessing for the Ye family.”
“Master…”
“Hey, you two—master and disciple—can you stop being so sentimental? Help me treat my injuries first. And I lost a tooth too.”
Li Huan covered his still-swollen eye. His speech whistled from the missing tooth, making Cheng Qiao and Ye Jun laugh.
Reducing swelling was actually very simple. Cheng Qiao fetched a basin of well water and had Li Huan immerse his face directly in it. The cool well water immediately soothed his burning, painful face.
Only when he couldn’t hold his breath anymore did he lift his head, take a deep gulp of air, then plunge his head back into the basin again. After repeating this countless times, the swollen areas miraculously subsided.
Li Huan knew this was water from Cheng Qiao’s treasure space, so he was reluctant to pour it out casually. He simply carried the basin to the backyard and poured the water onto the pumpkin patch.
He had no idea that this small action would nearly scare Mother Li half to death the next morning when she went to water the backyard. The pumpkin patch that had been watered with the well water had completely transformed—each pumpkin had grown enormous, making Mother Li think she was seeing ghosts.
“Qiao, Huan-zi…”
Cheng Qiao had stayed up late the night before reading medical texts and was sleeping deeply. Li Huan had already gotten up—he was going to the county hospital today to get a false tooth fitted. Missing a front tooth seriously affected his looks.
Hearing Mother Li’s voice, already warped with shock, Cheng Qiao groggily threw on an outer robe to get up. Li Huan ran out even faster.
“Mother, what’s wrong?”
Seeing Li Huan and Cheng Qiao run out one after the other, Mother Li’s lips trembled so badly she couldn’t speak. She could only point toward the backyard, looking utterly terrified.
Li Huan immediately grabbed a shovel and rushed toward the backyard. Cheng Qiao followed. When they saw the giant pumpkins, they exchanged glances, both at a loss for words.
Li Huan hadn’t expected that just one basin of water could make the pumpkins grow so huge. Cheng Qiao hadn’t expected that sprinkling well water into the soil would have such an astonishing effect.
“Li Huan, go get some rice and wheat seeds. Get a bit of other seeds too,” Cheng Qiao said.
Li Huan immediately understood her meaning. She wanted to use the space’s well water to experiment, to see what kind of rice and wheat would grow.
“We must dilute it,” Li Huan whispered.
Cheng Qiao nodded. If the rice grew taller than a person, that would really scare people to death. And all these pumpkins—put them into the space.
In the blink of an eye, the giant pumpkins in the field were gone. Only then did the two of them put on an act and go back to Mother Li, saying there was nothing in the backyard.
Mother Li didn’t dare go alone, so she dragged the two of them toward the backyard. But when she saw the empty plot of land, she couldn’t help rubbing her eyes.
“Qiao, Huan-zi… could it be that I wasn’t fully awake and was dreaming?”
Li Huan nodded solemnly and said he’d experienced this kind of thing too—it was called sleepwalking.
Since it was just a dream, Mother Li didn’t dwell on it. Cheng Qiao went to the kitchen and added a bit of space well water to the plain rice porridge. Her mother-in-law had been frightened today—she should drink something nutritious.
Li Huan rode his bicycle to the county town. When Shouhou saw that Li Huan was missing a front tooth, he wanted to laugh but didn’t dare. Who was so fierce as to knock out Brother Huan’s front tooth?
Li Huan felt a bit embarrassed, but he puffed out his chest and said that the other guy hadn’t fared well either—his leg bone was probably slightly fractured, because he’d been limping when he left.
The two joked around, talking nonsense, but when the doctor said it would take more than half a month before the false tooth could be fitted, Li Huan felt quite unhappy.
For half a month he shouldn’t speak at all. Otherwise, as soon as he opened his mouth, either air would leak out or the missing tooth would show—he’d be laughed to death by the villagers. But the doctor spread his hands helplessly; making a false tooth took time.
They could only head back. Shouhou wanted to keep Li Huan for a meal at his place, but because of the tooth issue, Li Huan had no interest at all. He didn’t want to see anyone right now.
Half a month later, Li Huan went to the hospital again. This time Cheng Qiao went with him, holding Little Cheng Li and Little Ming together. It happened to be Little Cheng Li’s third birthday, and they planned to take him to the county town to buy toys.
Mother Li wanted to keep Little Ming at home. With the couple going together—one to get a false tooth fitted and the other to look after the child—she was worried Cheng Qiao wouldn’t be able to handle two kids alone.
But Cheng Qiao shook her head. Little Ming had to go out today. Don’t be fooled by the fact that he was only one year old—he was very sharp. Going out to buy toys and taking the older one but not the younger one would definitely hurt him emotionally.
Li Huan still went to Uncle Niu’s place to rent an ox cart. He put both children onto the cart and slowly made their way toward the county town.
After arriving, Li Huan went to the dental clinic to get his false tooth fitted. Little Cheng Li suddenly said he needed to use the toilet. Cheng Qiao immediately took him to the hospital restroom, but Little Cheng Li was already grown—he couldn’t go into the women’s restroom anymore.
Little Cheng Li had never gone into a men’s restroom by himself and was a little scared. Cheng Qiao thought it would be better to put him into the space—the big bathroom inside was clean and bright.
She led Little Cheng Li to a deserted dark corner, but no matter what she did, Little Cheng Li just stood there, looking at her with a strange expression.
“Little Cheng Li, can’t you get in anymore?” Cheng Qiao asked.
“Mom, get in where?” he replied.
“Get in…”
Cheng Qiao suddenly stood upright in shock. In her previous life, Little Cheng Li had died on his third birthday. And today, Little Cheng Li had just turned three.
Could it be that at this moment, the space would close?
