Considering Su Ruo’s current condition, Xi Yuechen didn’t stay on the phone for long. He ordered her to hurry up and go to sleep.
Su Ruo stuck out her tongue. It’s just one sleepless night, what’s the big deal? Everyone’s being so cautious…
But thinking back to that call, waves of sweetness kept bubbling up in her heart, and the corners of her lips couldn’t stop lifting.
The Chief had sounded so happy. He hadn’t said it directly, but after all this time, how could she not notice the obvious change in Xi Yuechen’s mood? What’s more, she had deliberately paid close attention just now.
She gently touched her lower abdomen and whispered, “Baby, I’m your mommy. From now on, you must be obedient and stay quietly inside Mommy’s belly. After a few months, Mommy will take you to see the world—and your daddy.”
Under the soft lamplight, Su Ruo caressed her belly as she spoke, her face glowing with a joy she had never shown before, radiating warmth.
Zhang Huaqing and Su Heng had been sitting outside for about half an hour. Seeing how late it was, they got up and headed into the ward.
The phone call should be over by now. If it wasn’t, they would definitely have to stop her—newly pregnant, yet staying up late on the phone? And what about the radiation? No, from now on, they would have to keep an eye on her—no computer, no phone, at least not for too long. The child was still so tiny, how could it withstand all that? Zhang Huaqing was already making plans in her head.
They gently pushed open the door and found the room quiet again. Clearly, the call had ended.
As they stepped into the inner ward, they saw Su Ruo with her hand resting on her stomach, softly humming a tune—almost like a lullaby. Her voice was faint, audible only when they drew closer.
Seeing this, Su Heng couldn’t help but stop in his tracks, quietly watching his sister.
Perhaps it was because she was pregnant, about to become a mother, but suddenly he realized his sister had changed. Or maybe it was that something had been added to her—her pretty face wore a serene smile he had never seen before, her every movement carrying a different aura, one that gave people a sense of warmth and reassurance.
Such radiance shining from her young, beautiful figure was captivating in its own unique way.
“Ruoruo, why aren’t you asleep yet? Do you know what time it is already?”
Zhang Huaqing’s gentle scolding broke Su Heng’s daze. Coming back to himself, he saw his sister wearing the guilty, fawning smile of a child caught doing something naughty. He couldn’t help but smile and walk over.
“Mom, I was just about to sleep.” Su Ruo looked at the time—it really was late. But since she had slept quite a bit during the day, she wasn’t sleepy at all now.
“You child, why can’t you ever let people worry less? Do you think your body is the same as before? You have to be careful about the baby in your belly.”
Zhang Huaqing walked over, tucked Su Ruo in, and pulled the blanket snugly around her. “Now you finally know how to care about the baby? Yet during the day, you acted like you’d suffered some great loss.”
Su Ruo pressed her lips together in embarrassment, then pouted playfully. “Mom, I was just caught off guard earlier, didn’t react in time. Don’t keep bringing it up, okay?” She blinked, feigning indignation. “Of course I care about the baby—and the Chief does too.”
Seeing her daughter’s overflowing happiness, Zhang Huaqing didn’t press further. She only gave a soft snort and asked, “Yuechen knows already, right? What did he say? Was he happy?”
“He wouldn’t dare not be. At his age, me giving him a child is already more than he deserves!” Su Ruo declared with smug pride, acting like a spoiled little girl.
“As long as he’s happy. It’s late now, go to sleep. We can talk tomorrow.”
Looking at her daughter’s playful little-girl act, Zhang Huaqing suddenly felt a pang in her heart. Her eyes stung with tears. Afraid Su Ruo would notice, she quickly turned off the light and pulled the inner door shut.
“Sleep well,” she reminded softly.
Su Heng noticed something off and asked gently, “Mom, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
“Just yesterday, your sister was still snuggling in my arms, calling me ‘Mommy’ like a little child. In the blink of an eye, she’s about to be a mother herself…” Zhang Huaqing’s heart ached, and a few tears slipped down.
“Mom, don’t dwell on it. Isn’t this a good thing? Sister has her own family now. Look at how much Uncle Xi’s family dotes on her. And soon you’ll have a grandchild. Having both a son and a daughter, and soon a grandson—that’s something to be happy about.” Su Heng put a comforting arm around her shoulders.
Zhang Huaqing wasn’t truly sad, just overcome by memories. Hearing his words, she gathered herself and nodded.
With a sigh in his heart, Su Heng settled his mother down in the outer ward to rest, then turned off the light and left.
While everyone there drifted into peaceful sleep, Xi Yuechen was wide awake.
The shock of Su Ruo’s pregnancy still hadn’t faded. The thought consumed him—how could he possibly sleep?
Just imagining that little woman carrying his child, nurturing a new life for him, stirred a strange, indescribable feeling in his chest. Before long, a tiny being with a little face just like hers would be born into this world.
The joy and thrill of becoming a father for the first time made the corners of his lips lift unconsciously. His longing for Su Ruo reached its peak. How badly he wished he could be by her side.
For the first time, he had the selfish urge to ignore everything else. For the first time, he tossed and turned sleepless, because of one person.
Since Su Ruo appeared, Xi Yuechen himself had been changing—no longer cold and detached, but slowly regaining real emotions, becoming more like an ordinary man.
The thought of his mission weighed even heavier on him now. He resolved to speed up, finish early, and apply for leave. That little woman was pregnant and alone—how hard it must be for her.
He felt guilty.
For Xi Yuechen to stir with such emotions, to fight for time for the sake of one person—Su Ruo truly was blessed beyond measure.
The next morning, Su Ruo woke early. Perhaps it was the unfamiliar bed, or perhaps her nerves were too excited, too alive—she couldn’t sleep much at all.
Shen Liang came over early, carrying breakfast from home, with Xi Jian’an following behind.
Shen Liang didn’t want Su Ruo eating hospital food—she insisted on fresh, nutritious meals. Right now, Su Ruo needed good nourishment.
When Xi Jian’an had come yesterday, Su Ruo had been asleep, so he hadn’t disturbed her and left quickly.
On the surface, he still carried himself with composure and dignity, but inside, he was brimming with excitement. A grandchild—he had been waiting so long for this! He could barely contain his eagerness.
Seeing all his old comrades already holding grandchildren while he had none—even if he pretended not to care, every time he saw those adorable babies, he couldn’t help feeling envious. When would he finally hold one himself?
After all, even a man as stern and resolute as Minister Xi was getting older. He, too, longed for the leisurely days of tending flowers, feeding birds—and cradling a grandchild. The years of endless responsibilities were exhausting.
Seeing her father-in-law arrive, Su Ruo instinctively tried to get out of bed, but Shen Liang quickly stopped her.
“What are you doing? Stay put. Your father only dropped by on his way to work to check on you.”
“Dad, Mom, why did you come so early? I’m not even hungry yet. You didn’t need to trouble yourselves—it wastes Dad’s time.” Su Ruo was stuck in bed, so she could only smile sheepishly.
“What are you talking about? I’m not in a rush for work. I just wanted to see you.” Xi Jian’an smiled warmly.
Just then, Zhang Huaqing returned with some fruit and teased them about showing up so early.
Since his driver was waiting outside, Xi Jian’an couldn’t stay long. Besides, he still felt a bit awkward in his daughter-in-law’s presence.
“I’ll go now. Xiao Liu is still waiting downstairs, and it won’t do to be late.” He stood and checked his watch.
Zhang Huaqing didn’t insist on keeping him, but saw him out. Shen Liang busied herself serving Su Ruo a bowl of soup.
Su Ruo had long grown used to her mother-in-law openly ignoring her father-in-law in front of family. She didn’t feel awkward, just accepted the bowl and began drinking slowly.
After breakfast, Su Ruo urged Zhang Huaqing to go home and rest—she surely hadn’t slept well in the hospital last night.
Though reluctant, after some persuasion from both Su Ruo and Shen Liang, Zhang Huaqing agreed to return for a while, promising to come back later.
Su Ruo could only sigh. Such a simple matter, yet both families were treating it like a major crisis. Wasn’t pregnancy a perfectly normal thing?
After lying in bed for a while, boredom nearly drove her mad. Her phone had long been confiscated—“radiation,” they said. Magazines too were restricted, “bad for the eyes.” Su Ruo wanted to howl at the sky. Did they really need to be this cautious?!
Just as she convinced Shen Liang to let her take a walk downstairs—anything was better than being cooped up—she had barely gotten out of bed when the door swung open, cheerful voices filling the room.
At the sound, Su Ruo instantly knew who it was—He Wen and the others. These people were always so loud, even in a hospital.
“Ah, Ruoruo! Such delightful news, worthy of a grand celebration!” He Wen’s booming laughter rang out first.
What kind of idiom is that? Su Ruo twitched her lips. Always so dramatic.
A group of them bustled in, their chatter only slightly subdued when they noticed Shen Liang. They greeted her politely, then turned their smiles back to Su Ruo.
It was Xi Yuehui, He Wen, Ye Huaiming, Wen Shaoning, and the others—all carrying bundles of things.
One look, and Su Ruo nearly fainted. Really? Supplements were one thing, but what on earth was all this… baby stuff?
Milk powder, clothes, toys—everything but the big items. Practically a full set already.
Holding her forehead, she sighed, “What on earth are you all bringing here?”
“For your baby, of course! There’s more in the car—we’ll drop it off at your place. If it’s not enough, we’ll go shopping again this afternoon!”
Ye Huaiming lifted his bags proudly, as if perfectly reasonable.
“Exactly. Your child will be the eldest of the next generation—how could we elders show up empty-handed?” He Wen beamed. If not for their rush to visit, they would’ve bought even more. They hadn’t realized until now just how many adorable baby items there were. Each one was irresistible.
My god… a whole bunch of lunatics. Su Ruo sighed inwardly.
