RMM – Chapter 75 Transfer Order

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 77 of 365 11

When Xi Yuechen came back, it was already 8 p.m. Su Ruo was playing with her phone, looking rather bored.

“Chief, can I go home tomorrow?” she asked.

Xi Yuechen paused mid-step when he heard her and looked at her. After thinking for a moment, he finally said, “Alright, tomorrow then.”

He knew she was bored. He had been busy lately, and the transfer order hadn’t come through yet—though it was more or less finalized. He didn’t have time to keep her company, so it was just as well if she went back. Still, he couldn’t help but worry, so he added,

“Once you’re back, stay at home—either house is fine. Just be careful when you go out.”

Su Ruo replied with a “Got it,” while secretly laughing at how overly cautious he was.

Before bed, Xi Yuechen still carefully applied ointment to Su Ruo’s hand like usual. Her palm had mostly healed by now.

That night, he held the sleeping Su Ruo in his arms for a long time before he finally drifted off.

The next morning, Xi Yuechen woke Su Ruo before he left. Once she groggily came to, he started speaking to her while putting on his uniform.

“I’ll have Wang Ze take you home later.” It wasn’t too far, but still a four- or five-hour trip.

“Huh? That’s not necessary. It’s not like I don’t know the way home.” Su Ruo sat up and rubbed her eyes.

“Objection overruled. I’ll have Wang Ze come over. Now get up and have breakfast.” Xi Yuechen buttoned up his uniform, adjusted his collar, and glanced at Su Ruo, who was puffing her cheeks and glaring at him.

“Get up.” He leaned slightly against the wardrobe, expressionless as he looked at her.

Su Ruo didn’t want to just sit there glaring at him, so she huffed and dramatically got out of bed.

Watching her storm out of the bedroom without even looking at him, Xi Yuechen’s eyes filled with helpless amusement. He followed her out—the porridge he had made was almost done.

In the end, Su Ruo gave in and let Wang Ze drive her back in her own car.

She didn’t see Xi Yuechen again before leaving the base. As she walked out of the camp, a faint melancholy rose in her heart. She looked back at the slowly receding military compound and sighed, then turned her eyes away.

“Xiao Wang, have you all been busy lately?” she finally couldn’t resist asking, leaning slightly forward to speak to Wang Ze, who was driving.

“Us? About the same as usual. Not too busy,” Wang Ze replied casually, not thinking much of it. But then his mind clicked—wasn’t she really asking about the commander?

“Oh, right. The commander has been really busy lately, always in meetings,” he quickly added.

“I see. You all work so hard.” Su Ruo didn’t feel like talking anymore. She leaned back in her seat and stared blankly out the window at the scenery flying by.

Wang Ze noticed the slight sadness in her voice. Glancing in the rearview mirror, he saw her low spirits and wisely chose to keep quiet for the rest of the ride.

At that moment, Xi Yuechen was still in a meeting. He had just received the transfer order—it was to Province D on the southwest border.

Province D sat along the border, and its surroundings were rarely peaceful. Drug trafficking groups, especially cross-border ones, were rampant. Taking advantage of the thick jungles along the frontier, they moved around frequently and seemed impossible to fully eliminate.

This had always been a priority target for the higher-ups, with significant manpower and resources poured in. Yet the results had been minimal.

Now that Xi Yuechen was being promoted and reassigned, he naturally caught the leadership’s attention. This was practically a godsend. After all, who was Xi Yuechen? Not only was he a famed iron-blooded commander known for his unmatched capabilities, but he also had a background in the special forces. There was no one more suited for the job.

Back in the special forces, he had a reputation for being invincible—taking on ten enemies alone and completing countless dangerous missions with stellar results.

With the increasing chaos in Province D, cracking down on cross-border crime had become a top priority for the military commission. They were determined to protect national peace and security at any cost.

To tackle this, top military elites from all regions were selected to form a special operations team. In just under two months, over thirty members had been chosen. But a leader for the team still hadn’t been confirmed.

Everyone knew this was a “plum post” in name but a double-edged sword in reality. Being the team leader meant carrying enormous pressure—directly under the military commission’s spotlight. If successful, you’d rise quickly. But if you failed, you could kiss your future goodbye. It was like being exiled in ancient times: glamorous on paper, but possibly career-ending.

So even though everyone recognized the prestige, no one dared to take the risk. Promotions could come slowly—they didn’t want to ruin their careers outright. Thus, the team leader spot remained vacant.

But a plan like this couldn’t be left hanging. The higher-ups demanded a suitable team leader, and so the B Military Region near the capital became the prime candidate.

Although it was “just” a team leader role, choosing the right person wasn’t so simple. The leadership racked their brains over it.

Then Xi Yuechen came into the picture—like a lifeline. Without hesitation, they nominated him. Who else could take this on if not him?

His capabilities were well-known. This leadership role had his name written all over it. Once submitted, the appointment was quickly approved.

When Su Feng heard the news, he was silent for a long while before finally calling Xi Yuechen to ask about his decision.

Of course, Su Feng knew how important the mission was, so he didn’t object. But Xi Yuechen was not just his son-in-law—he was also an exceptional talent. There were other ways to develop his career. Whether or not the mission could succeed was still uncertain. More importantly, those criminals were dangerous outlaws—it was extremely risky.

Yet Xi Yuechen didn’t react much. He calmly accepted the transfer order and said he would obey his superiors. After all, orders were orders—wherever he was sent, he’d go.

Su Feng could only sigh. So be it—his children had their own paths to follow. Xi Yuechen was a soldier, a guardian of the country. Naturally, he went where he was needed. But what about his daughter…

Receiving the order only made Xi Yuechen busier. He had to handle the transfer paperwork and undergo specialized training for the operation, leaving him with barely any time to sleep.

Returning to a silent, dark house, he felt a little out of place. It was too quiet. He wondered what the little woman was doing now.

Meanwhile, Su Ruo didn’t return to Jingyue Mingsu in B City. Instead, she asked Wang Ze to take her directly to Zhengjia Courtyard.

Her daily necessities were all in the car anyway, so she might as well go straight there.

No one was home—it wasn’t the weekend. Her father-in-law was at work, Yue Hui probably had classes or was out having fun, and her mother-in-law likely had some activity planned.

Wandering around the house made her feel lonely. Not in the mood to watch TV or go online, she picked up the phone and called He Wen.

“Well, well, look who it is! The esteemed wife of the commander herself! It’s been ages! What can this humble servant do for you today?”

The call was picked up quickly, and before Su Ruo could say anything, He Wen’s teasing voice came through the speaker.

“Pfft, such a smooth talker.” Su Ruo chuckled, humming as she arranged her skincare products. “What are you up to?”

She was staying in Xi Yuechen’s room in Zhengjia Courtyard. It was spacious and had its own bathroom, so she usually kept her things there.

“Nothing much, just killing time at Siqi,” He Wen replied dully.

“Siqi?” Su Ruo raised an eyebrow. She’d almost forgotten about that place. “Oh right, how’s Siqi doing these days?”

“How do you think? Blessed by your discerning eye—even if it was on the verge of death, it had to bounce back. Don’t worry, Siqi’s doing amazing. Cracking the top 300 in the country next year won’t be a problem.”

Talking about this finally brought some energy to He Wen’s voice. Siqi was developing rapidly—it was like the saying went: fortune follows disaster. She had learned a lot and even earned quite a bit. Her old man at home had even praised her—a rare event—saying she was finally acting like a proper person. As if she’d been a stone all these years.

“That’s great. Don’t worry, Siqi will go even further.” In her past life, Siqi had become one of the top names in the industry. It wouldn’t take long this time either.

“Thanks for the good luck. Hey, aren’t you supposed to be enjoying some sweet alone time with your man? Why are you calling me?”

“I just came back from the base. I’m bored,” Su Ruo rolled her eyes.

“Back already? Your commander let you go that easily?” He Wen teased while fiddling with a pen.

“Shut it! Get out here right now. Same place as usual.” Su Ruo didn’t wait for her to reply and hung up.

Looking at her phone, He Wen shrugged, grabbed her coat, and headed out. Staying in was boring anyway—might as well go out for a stroll.

After hanging up, Su Ruo didn’t dawdle either. She called Duan Wei, changed her clothes, and headed downstairs. As she walked, she called Shen Liang to give her a heads-up.

Shen Liang, upon hearing that Su Ruo was back and alone, told her to go out and have fun with He Wen. Before hanging up, she reminded her repeatedly to be careful and stay with He Wen at all times.

Su Ruo smiled helplessly and promised to ease her mother-in-law’s worries. Clearly, last time had really scared them—everyone had been fussing over her since.

After telling the housekeeper, she headed out. Sitting in her car, she looked at her palm. The scabs were mostly gone, healing nicely, with some areas showing new skin that was a different color.

Driving should be fine, right? Just to be safe, she wrapped both palms in tissue to guard against germs on the steering wheel.

“That should do it. I’m being way too cautious already,” Su Ruo muttered, curling her lip before starting the car and driving off.
