Zhang Huaqing bought some new clothes for Su Ruo, saying that she never really shopped for herself and had no sense of dressing like a beautiful young woman.
Su Ruo stared in shock at the wardrobe filled with brand-new clothes. This was what they called “having nothing to wear?”
Forced by Zhang Huaqing to try on the clothes, Su Ruo stood in front of the mirror, carefully examining the reflection staring back at her, unmoving.
To be fair, Su Ruo truly had a stunning appearance—delicate features, a graceful figure, smooth and flawless skin. Every part of her exuded beauty, as if she were naturally born to be admired.
Like a living mannequin, every outfit fit her perfectly, as if tailored just for her. While marveling at Zhang Huaqing’s impeccable taste, Su Ruo couldn’t help but once again appreciate the many advantages of having good looks.
Fate worked in strange ways—it had granted her this incredible blessing. Except for the troublesome issue of having a husband, everything else in her life seemed almost perfect.
At the thought of her husband, an emotionless face suddenly surfaced in her mind…
She quickly shook her head, trying to rid herself of the image. No, no, no, don’t think about it! Thinking about it will only lead to nightmares, she thought to herself in exasperation.
“Ruoruo, what are you doing? Why is it taking so long?”
Zhang Huaqing’s voice came from outside the room, carrying a tone of urgency.
“Ah, I’m done, Mom! Coming out now.”
“Ruoruo, does your head still hurt?”
As soon as Su Ruo stepped out, Zhang Huaqing looked her up and down with satisfaction before asking.
“No, it doesn’t hurt anymore. I’ve told you, I’m fine now, but you just won’t stop worrying,” Su Ruo replied nonchalantly, adjusting the hem of her outfit.
“Oh, that’s good. Then let’s go. No need to change—you look great.”
Before Su Ruo could react, she watched in astonishment as Zhang Huaqing pulled a suitcase out of her room and had someone carry it downstairs.
“What’s going on, Mom? Where are we going?”
A strong sense of unease crept up in Su Ruo’s heart. She hurriedly asked for clarification.
“Why ask so many questions? I’m not selling you off, don’t worry. Let’s go, the driver is waiting downstairs.”
With that, Zhang Huaqing grabbed Su Ruo’s hand and pulled her downstairs. Once they were in the car, a satisfied smile finally appeared on her face.
Watching the scenery blur past outside the window, Su Ruo turned to Zhang Huaqing again and asked, “Mom, where exactly are we going?”
Zhang Huaqing’s expression was filled with excitement and mystery. She chuckled and said, “You’ll find out when we get there.”
The car slowly drove into a residential complex. Looking at the luxurious, elegant surroundings, Su Ruo asked in confusion, “Mom, are we moving? Isn’t the old courtyard just fine?”
“We are moving, but not we—just you.”
Su Ruo stared at Zhang Huaqing, an uneasy feeling creeping up her spine. Something’s off. Something’s very, very off.
As soon as she got out of the car and saw the figure standing at the entrance of the building—someone not exactly familiar but definitely not a stranger—Su Ruo glanced at the suitcase that had been taken down and felt her mind explode with a loud boom.
At last, everything made sense. They hadn’t exactly sold her off, but wasn’t this pretty much the same thing?
Standing at the door, staring at Xi Yuechen’s face, Su Ruo felt utterly trapped—she couldn’t move forward, nor could she turn back. She wanted to cry but had no tears left.
“Mom, you’re here? Come in,” Xi Yuechen said.
“Oh, sure, sure. We’ll head up right away. You just recovered—why bother coming down to meet us?” Zhang Huaqing greeted her son-in-law with a warm, affectionate smile.
“I’ve been fine for a while now, it was nothing serious to begin with. Let’s go up, Mom.”
As he spoke, Xi Yuechen took the bags from Zhang Huaqing’s hands and stepped aside slightly to make way for her to enter first.
This small movement left him standing directly next to a very unwilling Su Ruo. He turned his head slightly and called softly, “Ruoruo.”
Su Ruo felt her stomach churn with discomfort. She wanted nothing more than to turn around and walk away immediately. But she didn’t have the courage to act on that impulse. If Zhang Huaqing had forcibly dragged her here today, it had to be with the approval of the head of the family. She simply didn’t have the guts to resist.
Zhang Huaqing turned around to check on them and saw her daughter standing there, clearly unwilling to move. Frowning, she urged, “Ruoruo, let’s go. What are you standing there thinking about?”
With that, Su Ruo finally understood—she had to move in here. Like it or not, they were husband and wife, and living together was only natural. She had no choice in the matter. At the end of the day, she was Su Ruo now, and she had to take on everything that came with that name.
Xi Yuechen noticed her slight frown. The reluctance on her small face was so obvious that it was impossible to ignore.
As they made their way upstairs, he kept his gaze on the woman walking beside him, her head lowered. Does being with me really make her that miserable? The blatant unwillingness she showed made him feel a bit unsettled.
When they reached the apartment, Shen Liang was already waiting at the door. Seeing them arrive, she greeted them with a broad smile.
“You’re finally here! I’ve been waiting forever.”
Exchanging a brief glance with Zhang Huaqing, she chuckled and continued, “Come on in. I had the family chef prepare dinner today—you’re all in for a feast. It’s not as big as the courtyard house, but let’s just make do for now.”
Then, she turned to the silent Su Ruo, took her hand warmly, and smiled. “It’s only been a few days, and our Ruoruo is even more beautiful! Your mother-in-law must’ve done something right in her past life to deserve such a wonderful daughter-in-law. If Xi Yuechen ever bullies you, just tell me—I’ll take care of him for you.”
Su Ruo looked down at the hands holding hers, then up at the kind, smiling face of Shen Liang. Well, she thought, at least my mother-in-law seems nice.
“Mom,” she greeted with a polite smile.
No matter how much she disliked Xi Yuechen, she still had to show proper respect to his mother. That was just basic manners, and Su Ruo prided herself on being a person with good character—she wouldn’t make such an obvious mistake.
Shen Liang was pleased with her response. She pulled Su Ruo into the apartment and had her sit on the sofa, asking in detail about her injury, whether she had experienced any more headaches, and how she had been feeling these past few days. Su Ruo answered honestly, keeping a faint smile on her face the entire time.
Meanwhile, after bringing Su Ruo’s luggage into the bedroom, Xi Yuechen returned to the living room and was met with the sight of his mother holding Su Ruo’s hand, chatting warmly with her. Occasionally, Zhang Huaqing chimed in, and all three women were smiling warmly.
An unfamiliar feeling suddenly filled Xi Yuechen’s heart—something he had never quite experienced before. It spread through him, wrapping around his entire being.
Leaning against the wall, he gazed at Su Ruo’s delicate face. This little woman really is beautiful, he mused, especially when she smiles like that.
As Su Ruo sat chatting with Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang, her fondness for her mother-in-law grew rapidly. It was clear that Shen Liang genuinely liked her, and with the strong bond between the two families, she realized that at least she wouldn’t have to worry about any mother-in-law drama in the future.
Time flew by, and before she knew it, night had fallen. After dinner, Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang prepared to leave. Before heading out, they even helped clean up the kitchen, despite Su Ruo’s attempts to stop them.
Before leaving, Zhang Huaqing pulled Su Ruo into the bedroom for a private talk, reminding her in detail that although she had lost her memory, she still had responsibilities to fulfill. As a wife, she should behave like one instead of looking so unwilling. She emphasized that Xi Yuechen had little free time, so when he was home, she should be more considerate and not let her pride get in the way.
She also mentioned that before losing her memory, Su Ruo had been very enthusiastic about this marriage, which was why their two families had become in-laws. Now that she had amnesia, she still couldn’t go back on her word and put both families in a difficult position.
This left Su Ruo feeling quite conflicted—the pressure was immense. What she didn’t realize, however, was that Zhang Huaqing had completely made this up. Without some pressure, who knew how Su Ruo would treat this marriage?
As Zhang Huaqing was about to leave, Su Ruo hesitated, then carefully tugged at her sleeve and tried to negotiate. “Mom, how about I go home with you tonight? I’m really not mentally prepared for this yet. Can I go back for now?”
Hearing this, Zhang Huaqing shot her a glare and scolded lightly, “Did you even listen to anything I just said? Stay here and behave yourself. Don’t make us worry.”
After sending Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang off, Su Ruo felt a deep sense of helplessness, as if she were standing on the edge of a cold, desolate battlefield. Now what?
Ignoring Xi Yuechen, who was standing nearby, she walked straight into the bedroom and began unpacking. As she hung her clothes in the wardrobe, she noticed that there were already some women’s garments inside. Frowning in confusion, she stared at them, wondering who they belonged to.
“That’s your clothing. It was placed here when we got married,” came a deep voice from behind.
Su Ruo turned around to find Xi Yuechen leaning against the bedroom doorframe, watching her. She had no idea when he had arrived.
She initially didn’t want to respond, but Zhang Huaqing’s words echoed in her mind. So, after a slight pause, she gave a soft “Mm” in acknowledgment and then turned back to examine the clothes again.
If what Zhang Huaqing said was true—that the previous Su Ruo had not resisted this marriage—then her relationship with Xi Yuechen couldn’t have been too bad. Now that she was Su Ruo, she couldn’t act too out of line. Using amnesia as an excuse didn’t give her the right to disrupt someone else’s life.
As she continued unpacking, she couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. Isn’t this too many clothes? She glanced at the small collection of men’s clothing in the corner and felt a wave of embarrassment.
When she was about to start organizing her undergarments, she suddenly remembered the man still standing at the door. She turned to look at Xi Yuechen and hesitantly said, “Uh… do you want to go watch TV for a while? I still need some time to finish up.”
Xi Yuechen glanced at her slightly embarrassed expression, then at the suitcase on the floor. Without a word, he turned around and left.
Su Ruo let out a quiet sigh of relief. His presence was too overwhelming.
After finishing her unpacking, she went to the en-suite bathroom to wash up before getting into bed. She didn’t bother calling Xi Yuechen from the living room—what a joke! Having to share a bed was already difficult enough; why would she actively invite him to bed?
Xi Yuechen spent some time watching TV in the living room but quickly lost interest. He then picked up a military magazine and started reading. By the time he finished, it was already late. Glancing toward the bedroom, he noticed a faint light seeping through the slightly open door.
When he pushed the door open, he found the little woman on the bed already sound asleep. Her head was buried in an orange pillow, lips slightly curved in a faint smile. A few strands of hair had fallen across her fair, peaceful face, and under the dim, warm light, she looked incredibly serene.
Staring at her small, curled-up figure, the corners of Xi Yuechen’s lips lifted ever so slightly. Quietly, he pulled the door closed behind him and walked into the bathroom to freshen up.
He was quick about it. Before long, he emerged and, moving lightly to avoid disturbing her, climbed into bed and turned off the bedside lamp.
Xi Yuechen had always been accustomed to living alone, yet now, with someone else’s presence in his bed, he didn’t feel the slightest discomfort. In fact, he found it oddly satisfying. The warmth from the little woman under the covers and the faint scent lingering in the air lulled him into a drowsy state. Before long, he drifted off into a light sleep.
The quiet night wrapped around them, their breathing rising and falling in an oddly harmonious rhythm.
It was a peaceful night’s sleep.
