Maybe because last night had been a little too intense, Xie Yuechen was very well-behaved tonight. As soon as he got into bed, he simply pulled Su Ruo into his arms and went to sleep—without any other moves.
This made Su Ruo breathe a sigh of relief. If he had let his hormones take over again, she really wouldn’t have been able to fend him off.
“By the way, what exactly happened yesterday?” Xie Yuechen still didn’t quite understand the whole situation.
Su Ruo had expected him to ask—just hadn’t expected him to hold it in for this long before bringing it up.
“I don’t know who it was, but someone got a few people to spike Mu You’s drinks with drugs. They put it in other people’s drinks too. The police were clearly in on it. They showed up and immediately hauled several of us off. We had surveillance footage as evidence, but they insisted it was fake and said we needed to be severely punished. If you had come any later yesterday, we might’ve really ended up locked up.”
After listening to Su Ruo’s rambling explanation, Xie Yuechen didn’t respond immediately. He furrowed his brows in deep thought. Mu You had a reputation—not many people would dare provoke them. Things had been peaceful for years. So who would be pulling strings behind the scenes now? And just colluding with a tiny local precinct? Was it because they didn’t know who they were messing with, or was it intentional?
“I don’t even know who would have it out for me,” Su Ruo muttered to herself, not minding his silence. “I don’t think I’ve offended anyone… even bribed that Chief Liu.”
“Have you gotten someone to look into it?” They had to find out who was behind it—otherwise, it would happen again.
“Yeah, a friend said he’d take care of it. Said we’ll probably have news in a few days,” Su Ruo replied casually. As luck would have it, she didn’t mention Liang Bo’an by name.
Xie Yuechen didn’t pay that omission much mind. As long as someone was investigating, it was just a matter of time. Su Ruo’s friends weren’t simple people—once they found the culprit, everything would be easy.
“Don’t let your guard down. And once you find out who it is, don’t act rashly. Let me know.”
“Mhm. Don’t worry. Once we find them, we’ll make sure there’s no loose ends. He Wen and Su Heng are waiting too.”
At the mention of those two, Su Ruo couldn’t help but laugh. “You didn’t see how miserable we looked that day. Especially Su Heng and Yue Hui—they’ll be teased about it for ages.”
Xie Yuechen couldn’t care less if those two got laughed at. As long as the little woman in his arms was safe, that was all that mattered.
“Alright, don’t think about it. Go to sleep,” he said softly, pulling Su Ruo closer into his chest.
“Mhm.” Su Ruo had grown used to sleeping in Xie Yuechen’s embrace. The loneliness she used to feel when sleeping alone was gone. The warmth and security of his arms soon lulled her to sleep.
The two of them soon dozed off, curled up close together. In the quiet bedroom, their synchronized breathing was peaceful and intimate.
The next morning, Su Ruo woke up in Xie Yuechen’s arms. It was rare for him to still be in bed. Her cheek was pressed against his warm, firm chest—it actually felt quite nice.
“You’re awake?” he asked.
His voice made his chest vibrate slightly, tickling her face. Su Ruo turned her head a bit before replying, “Mhm.”
“But, Chief, how come you’re up so late today?”
“I woke up early. Just didn’t feel like getting up,” he answered simply. As he spoke, he released the arm that had been around her waist, lifted the covers, and got out of bed.
Su Ruo pouted and didn’t say anything else. She narrowed her eyes and watched as Xie Yuechen’s bare upper body glowed in the morning light.
Hmm… what a great body—defined, strong lines. Not the kind of grotesquely ripped physique, but a lean, captivating kind of strength. His muscles were firm and perfectly proportioned. His skin, tanned from years of training under the sun, added to his rugged charm. Altogether, it made Su Ruo’s heart skip a beat. She quickly turned her eyes away from him dressing and tried to calm her breathing, pretending she was unfazed.
After dressing, Xie Yuechen glanced at her still lounging in bed, raised an eyebrow, but said nothing and walked out.
Only then did Su Ruo lift the blanket and sit up. “Geez… why did I get all flustered just from looking? We’ve already slept together—what’s with the schoolgirl nerves?”
Still, since she was awake, she might as well get up. Didn’t she do morning exercises every day now? She muttered to herself as she got dressed.
Mornings always had a quiet, pleasant quality—just like the way Xie Yuechen and Su Ruo went about their routines. One was in the bathroom freshening up, the other in the kitchen making breakfast—just like a long-married couple, moving in perfect sync.
When Su Ruo came out of the bathroom, breakfast was already on the table.
She gave a little shrug—was it that she was too slow, or that Xie Yuechen was too fast? Either way, he had everything ready already.
As usual, if Xie Yuechen was home, he was the one who did the dishes—regardless of who cooked. This time was no different.
Of course, Su Ruo didn’t just sit around either. By the time she had finished tidying up the house, it was almost noon. She glanced at the clock. It was getting late—might as well head to the military compound now and have lunch there, since they were going anyway.
After Xie Yuechen was done with the dishes, he offered to help clean up, but was refused. So he went into the study instead—not to read or use the computer, just sat quietly in the chair, deep in thought, his expression heavy with something unknown.
Su Ruo pushed open the study door, leaned against the frame, and called out, “Chief, how about we head to the compound now? We can have lunch there too. Sound good?”
“Alright,” Xie Yuechen looked up at her childish posture and nodded.
By now, Su Ruo was used to his cool demeanor. If he suddenly turned warm and gentle one day, that would be weird.
After calling Zhang Huaqing, the two of them set out. Xie Yuechen didn’t drive Yue Hui’s SUV this time. He stuck with Su Ruo’s BMW.
Glancing at him behind the wheel, Su Ruo thought silently: “The Chief really does suit an SUV better. Not that he looks bad in a sedan, but the rugged vibe of an SUV fits him more.” Last time he’d used Yue Hui’s car—did the Chief not have a car of his own? Should she get him one? It’s not like she couldn’t afford it.
“Do we need to buy anything?” Xie Yuechen’s voice suddenly broke her train of thought.
“Huh? Nah, we’re not exactly visiting guests.”
“Alright, let’s just head over then.” His eyes stayed focused on the road, but his words never felt careless—he was always serious, no matter what he was doing.
With her thoughts interrupted, Su Ruo didn’t dwell on the car idea anymore. She could just go buy one in a few days.
Before they even reached the compound, Su Heng had already been pushed out by the Empress Dowager (aka Mom) to wait at the gate. Leaning against the doorframe, he kicked the ground idly and grumbled, “Jeez, what’s the rush? They’re not even here yet. I swear, once you have a daughter and son-in-law, you don’t need a son anymore.”
Just as he was stewing in boredom, their car rolled up. Seeing it, Su Heng quickly rushed over, all eager and respectful.
Ever since Xie Yuechen had saved them from the precinct, Su Heng’s admiration for this brother-in-law had only grown—he practically worshipped him.
“Jie, Jie-fu!”
“Mhm,” Xie Yuechen responded as calmly as ever.
“Wow, so diligent! Waiting right at the door!” Su Ruo teased with a laugh.
“Of course! As soon as I heard you two were coming, I got so excited I couldn’t sit still—just had to stand out here and look down the road.”
Walking beside her, Su Heng grinned as he spoke, then raised his voice toward the house: “Mom! Your precious daughter is here! Come out and greet her!”
Su Ruo reached over and pinched his arm. “What kind of nonsense are you shouting, huh? Looking for a beating?”
“Ow ow! Let go, Jie, that hurts! Jie-fu, help me out here! (://)”
Su Ruo’s grip was no joke. It wasn’t excruciating, but it wasn’t pleasant either. Su Heng yelped exaggeratedly.
“Nobody can save you today. Acting all disrespectful—I will teach you a lesson,” Su Ruo raised an eyebrow and huffed.
Xie Yuechen just stood there quietly, watching the sibling squabble unfold with a hint of a smile in his eyes.
At that moment, Zhang Huaqing came out after hearing the commotion. Seeing her children roughhousing at the gate, she asked, “Hey, what’s going on now? You’re already bickering the moment you get here? Su Heng, did you mess with your sister again?”
“Mom.” Xie Yuechen greeted her in a clear, loud voice.
Naturally, Zhang Huaqing beamed at her ideal son-in-law and quickly ushered him inside.
Su Heng was left protesting his innocence: “Mom, am I really your own son? You never even ask what happened before blaming me. Seriously—Ow!”
Su Ruo gave his arm another hard squeeze, making him cry out.
“Hmph, that’s what you get for talking nonsense,” she said, dusting off her hands with a grin and walking toward Zhang Huaqing.
Xie Yuechen followed her, his steady steps a perfect match for her light ones. They looked like a naturally fitting pair—born to be together.
