Tonight, some things seemed to have veered off their usual course, and some things were beyond Liang Bo’an’s control.
Like now—Liang Bo’an should have been merely observing coldly, yet he drove the car right up to Qi Ran and gestured for her to get in.
Even he couldn’t explain why, the moment he saw Qi Ran flustered and panicking just now, something stirred inside him, and he instinctively wanted to help her.
It was clear the woman wanted to go somewhere, but couldn’t get a cab.
Hearing Liang Bo’an’s voice, Qi Ran instinctively stopped in her tracks. She leaned forward slightly—and then saw him seated calmly behind the wheel, his gaze locking straight onto hers.
Boom!
Qi Ran felt her heart explode in that instant. A dizzying, vertigo-like sensation washed over her, and her body froze.
How could she not recognize the person in the car? How could she ever forget this man in her life?
“You…”
Qi Ran opened her mouth, but didn’t know what to say. Her voice came out a little dry.
Never had she imagined she would see this man again in her lifetime. Her heart was in turmoil.
She had never expected to meet Liang Bo’an again. The suddenness of this moment left her utterly flustered.
“Where are you headed? I’ll take you.”
Liang Bo’an withdrew his gaze. Seeing the astonished and stunned expression on Qi Ran’s delicate face stirred an inexplicable feeling within him.
Not wanting to continue looking at her ghost-stricken expression, he turned his eyes away and said in a calm voice:
“Oh… okay…” Qi Ran’s mind was still in the same whirlwind as before. The sudden encounter with Liang Bo’an was overwhelming, and she was dazed, so she instinctively agreed.
“No, you don’t need to trouble yourself. You go about your business.”
Only after agreeing to Liang Bo’an did Qi Ran realize what she had said, and hurriedly corrected herself.
She didn’t mean anything else. The truth was, she and this man shouldn’t have any connection. Whatever had happened in the past was long gone. Now, she shouldn’t trouble him. After all, they would continue as strangers, so it was best not to have any entanglements.
But Qi Ran’s hasty refusals made Liang Bo’an feel slightly displeased. He had come over instinctively to help her, letting it be justified as a “good deed of the day,” a simple pleasure in helping someone. And yet, the woman looked so anxious…
Yet, despite her anxiety, she didn’t seem grateful at all. That attitude of avoiding him made Liang Bo’an uncomfortable.
Whether it was because no one had ever refused him before, or for some other reason, he didn’t know.
His expression darkened. “Hurry up. Don’t waste time.”
Seeing him like this, Qi Ran couldn’t refuse any longer. She bit her lip, still reluctant in her heart, but worried about her daughter in the hospital. Resolving herself, she opened the car door and got in.
Just for this ride, there would be no further connection afterward. Qi Ran comforted herself with this thought.
“Please take me to XX Hospital. Thank you.”
After calming herself, Qi Ran spoke to Liang Bo’an, though her head remained turned away, eyes fixed outside the car window.
Indeed, with their relationship, sitting together was inevitably awkward. It was better to remain silent.
Liang Bo’an didn’t mind. He drove straight toward the destination but soon felt somewhat annoyed.
Qi Ran’s resistance was obvious at a glance. He could see how unwilling she was to sit in his car.
A cold smile curved his lips. Liang Bo’an suddenly wanted to ask: If you avoid me like this, why did you get involved with him three years ago?
He still clearly remembered that night at the bar—she had approached him willingly. Although he had later gotten drunk, he hadn’t forgotten her cooperation.
If she could use the “first time” to play that night with him, why act like a viper now?
Yet, seeing her clenched fists trembling slightly, he swallowed the harsh words back.
Forget it. She was an inconsequential woman. No need to argue over her. Let her do as she wishes; after tonight, he would never see her again.
Although uneasy inside, Liang Bo’an still drove quickly, remaining silent all the way until they reached the hospital.
“I’m getting out. Thank you.”
When the car stopped, Qi Ran finally looked at Liang Bo’an, though only to say goodbye.
Liang Bo’an didn’t care much, simply nodding to acknowledge her thanks.
As she stepped out, Qi Ran glanced at him once more. Her expression was complex, but she said nothing, closing the car door and quickly running into the hospital.
Liang Bo’an didn’t pay much attention to her glance. To him, it held no meaning.
The car drove on for a while, already far from the hospital, yet the scent inside the car still lingered. Liang Bo’an recognized it as Qi Ran’s.
The woman’s scent wasn’t unpleasant. Liang Bo’an raised an eyebrow and instinctively looked toward the passenger seat—there was a phone.
Surely, Qi Ran had left it behind in her hurry.
How could someone be so careless?
Liang Bo’an’s lips tightened, his brows knitting. He was annoyed. The car continued forward, yet his eyes couldn’t help but glance at the phone.
Clearly, he was wrestling with a question: What should he do with the woman’s phone?
He thought about ignoring it. It was her own carelessness. Why should he meddle? A lost phone was just a lost phone—it wasn’t like it couldn’t be replaced.
Yet, after driving for about five more minutes, the car suddenly turned at an intersection in another direction.
After a while, the car slowed to a stop. Liang Bo’an stepped out, his expression sour, holding Qi Ran’s phone.
Not far away stood the hospital Qi Ran had just entered.
Entering the hospital, Liang Bo’an’s brows remained tightly furrowed. Not only because he had unnecessarily involved himself again, but also because he didn’t know where to find Qi Ran now.
Looking at the phone in his hand, a rare hint of frustration appeared on his face. Coming all this way and getting nothing in return wasn’t his style—but he couldn’t very well search floor by floor for her.
The phone had rung several times on the way over, but he hadn’t answered. Now he regretted it. Had he picked up, no matter who it was, he wouldn’t have been stuck here, helpless.
Time slowly passed. Finally, Liang Bo’an’s patience ran out. Idle and bored, he was doing something so pointless here.
Just as he was about to leave, he noticed two people entering the hospital, their footsteps stopping him.
He recognized them—they were the ones who had been with Qi Ran in the bar earlier. They hurried toward the elevator.
Liang Bo’an’s impatient expression softened slightly. Then, unexpectedly, he changed direction and walked toward the elevator as well.
He knew they were there to look for that woman; by following them, he could find her.
From start to finish, Liang Bo’an, usually sharp-minded, never thought of giving them the phone. That would have been the simplest solution.
Following the two into the elevator, letting them press the floor buttons, Liang Bo’an silently stayed in a corner.
But none of them expected that when the elevator doors opened, Qi Ran was standing outside, holding a small child, with a middle-aged man beside her.
Seeing the people in the elevator, Qi Ran froze for a moment. Then, seeing Liang Bo’an in the corner, her expression completely changed.
