“It doesn’t hurt, it’s nothing. %樂%文%し520.”
Xi Yuechen looked completely nonchalant, his expression not showing the slightest abnormality.
Xi Zi looked a little confused. “But it’s bleeding.”
For Xi Zi, bleeding meant pain. How could it not hurt? After everything that had happened so early in the morning, his little brain was having trouble processing it.
Xi Yuechen found it a bit amusing. He hadn’t expected his son to be so considerate, even caring about his father. Feeling satisfied, Old Man Xi was just about to say something to Xi Zi when he heard Su Ruo’s hurried footsteps. He realized there was no time to lecture his son about being a strong young man, so he reached out, scooped Xi Zi up, and placed him on the bed.
Just then, Su Ruo came rushing in with a small medical kit.
She was entirely focused on Xi Yuechen’s wound, so she had momentarily overlooked her beloved son. Seeing the little figure on the bed, she paused briefly, then quickly recovered. She simply said, “Baby, go play by yourself for a bit,” before sitting on the edge of the bed. She opened the kit and carefully began treating Xi Yuechen’s wound.
Fortunately, Su Ruo had handled such minor injuries before, and this one wasn’t too complicated. Although she was anxious, she wasn’t flustered.
This was the first time Xi Zi had been so ignored by Su Ruo. He was stunned for a moment, but being an understanding child, he realized that Mom was entirely focused on Dad’s wound. So he didn’t make a fuss and quietly sat aside, watching his mother carefully tend to his father’s arm.
“Chief, does it hurt?”
Su Ruo immediately regretted the earlier distraction and asked softly, her voice full of concern.
Xi Yuechen’s smile deepened. He reached out with his other hand to pat Su Ruo’s head. “It doesn’t hurt, it’s nothing. Really, it’s nothing.”
“How could it be nothing? It’s all my fault for being reckless.”
Su Ruo finished treating the wound without lifting her head. Her voice was low and heavy with disappointment, which made Xi Yuechen feel a mix of amusement and exasperation. Just moments ago, she had seemed like an angry cat; now she looked like a child who had done something wrong.
“I’ve been hurt worse before. This is nothing.”
Xi Yuechen’s eyes drifted as he seemed to recall memories long buried in time. Although those events were in the past, recalling them now felt as vivid as if they had happened yesterday. Every scene was clear, every detail bright, and even the pain could still be felt.
Su Ruo tried not to listen, but as Xi Yuechen spoke, she grew even more heavy-hearted. A layer of sadness spread across her face, and her eyes quietly grew hot.
Though Su Ruo kept her head down, Xi Yuechen could sense her emotions clearly. He was the kind of man who could read a person’s mood even without seeing their face, and Su Ruo’s subdued sadness was unmistakable.
“What’s wrong?”
Xi Yuechen frowned slightly, his earlier happiness fading. He was pleased to see Su Ruo care so deeply about him, but that didn’t mean he wanted to see her upset over such a small thing. It felt like the reaction was a bit too much.
“Chief… I’m scared.”
Su Ruo finally lifted her head. In that moment, a crystal-clear tear fell from her bright eyes, and the rims of her eyes were red.
Seeing this, Xi Yuechen frowned even more. Why was she crying?
He realized that her reaction wasn’t just about his small wound. Clearly, something deeper was troubling her.
Indeed, Su Ruo seemed upset and uneasy, not just because he had a minor bite wound.
“Don’t be afraid. Take your time and tell me. It’s nothing serious.”
Xi Yuechen couldn’t understand the source of her profound sadness, so he gently comforted her while quickly reflecting on himself.
Had he been too harsh earlier, scaring her? After all, she wasn’t one of his subordinates, so maybe she couldn’t handle his reprimands or cold stares. And… he had even raised a hand to hit her. Could that be why she felt so unsettled?
Thus, the proud and icy Chief Xi gained a new virtue—acknowledging mistakes. After reflecting, he thought he might have been too harsh earlier, scaring Su Ruo. Perhaps he should try controlling his temper more around her, toning down his intense aura. And when disciplining her, he should be gentler.
In just a few seconds, Xi Yuechen’s mind turned over a hundred thoughts. As he considered how to express a mild apology for his rough actions, Su Ruo spoke first.
“Chief… when you go on missions in the future, you have to be careful. You mustn’t get hurt, and especially not seriously… And you can’t hide anything from me, okay? You can’t—”
Su Ruo couldn’t continue. She pressed her lips together, her eyes slightly red, looking stubborn and complex as she stared straight at Xi Yuechen, as if demanding a satisfactory answer.
Xi Yuechen’s heart ached. He understood the reason for Su Ruo’s sorrow, even though she didn’t say it out loud. Her gaze had said everything.
She was afraid that one day he might… something might happen to him. After all, his job was never safe. Every mission carried danger, and any lapse could lead to disastrous consequences.
“I will be careful… I will always be by your side.”
Xi Yuechen’s voice was soft and calm but resolute, his expression solemn as if swearing an oath.
Rest assured. I will be more careful from now on. If I’ve been safe until now, I will continue to be. I’ve already owed you so much. I would do anything for you, never willing to let you suffer. How could I bear to see you worried or afraid? How could I leave you alone in this world?
Xi Yuechen gently embraced Su Ruo, silently reflecting on the weight of his words. His face showed concern and tenderness, his hands lightly stroking her back to soothe her unease, helping her let go of imaginary worries.
“You have to keep your word. Remember what you said today. Never forget it!”
Su Ruo rubbed her tears on Xi Yuechen’s shoulder, then spoke a little sternly, though her muffled voice undercut her bravado.
“Yes. I will. I’ll honor it for a lifetime.” Xi Yuechen whispered by her ear.
