Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 288 of 365 5

When Su Ruo arrived at the place Zhou Yunzhen had mentioned, Zhou Yunzhen was already there, waiting by the roadside.

After parking the car, Su Ruo got out and walked toward her.

“Yunzhen.”

When she reached Zhou Yunzhen’s side, Su Ruo smiled and said, “Why are you standing by the road? Why didn’t you find somewhere to sit?”

“It’s fine,” Zhou Yunzhen lifted her head and curved her lips into a faint smile, speaking indifferently. “I haven’t been waiting long. I just stood here after getting out of the car.”

Earlier, Zhou Yunzhen had been keeping her head lowered, her face hidden behind loose hair, making it hard to see clearly. But when she looked up, Su Ruo couldn’t help inhaling sharply.

“Yunzhen, what’s wrong with you? Why do you look so haggard? Did something happen?”

Su Ruo frowned, her expression full of concern. In truth, Zhou Yunzhen’s appearance had startled her. Her once elegant, beautiful face now looked alarmingly gaunt. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, her complexion was deathly pale, and upon closer inspection, the eyes that had once resembled a clear spring were now dry and bloodshot.

What had happened to reduce her to… well, almost unrecognizable?

She seemed to have suffered a huge blow. But what kind of blow could do this to her?

After all, Zhou Yunzhen valued her appearance more than anything. Yet now she showed up like this—especially in front of her. The more Su Ruo thought about it, the stranger it felt.

Could it be because of the commander?

But even heartbreak shouldn’t leave someone this utterly broken. Besides, hadn’t she always been so confident?

Then what could it be?

In just a second or two, countless thoughts raced through Su Ruo’s mind. On the surface, however, she maintained a worried, sympathetic expression.

“Yes… something did happen,” Zhou Yunzhen said softly. “I’m… really distressed right now. I wanted to talk to someone, but there was no one suitable. So I could only come to you. I know I’m bothering you, but… but I really feel awful… I don’t know what else to do…”

She grabbed Su Ruo’s arm, frowning as she spoke incoherently. She looked genuinely miserable, on the verge of tears.

Seeing Zhou Yunzhen’s pitiful and disheveled state, a flicker of amusement flashed through Su Ruo’s eyes.

Oh? Switching to a tragic act now?

Tsk tsk. Not bad acting—and impressive preparation, too. She’d really gone all out, even willing to make herself look like this. Quite ruthless, actually.

“Alright, alright. Calm down,” Su Ruo said gently. “Tell me what happened and I’ll help you think of a solution. Let’s find somewhere to sit first, okay? You look exhausted.”

As she supported Zhou Yunzhen, Su Ruo’s face was filled with anxiety and concern. Inside, however, she was maliciously guessing which performance Zhou Yunzhen was putting on today.

Would she end up sobbing and confessing her filthy intentions, then beg Su Ruo to ‘give her up’ to her?

Hah. Who knew? A woman’s heart was as unfathomable as the sea. She’d deal with it step by step.

“I didn’t drive here,” Zhou Yunzhen said more calmly now. “Can we go sit in your car?”

“Sure. Let’s go.” Su Ruo smiled and agreed.

Once they were in the car, Zhou Yunzhen seemed to lose all strength at once, slumping into the seat. She leaned her head against the window, eyelids half-lowered, her expression weary.

“Yunzhen, are you okay? What exactly happened? How did you end up like this?” Su Ruo asked after fastening her seatbelt.

“It’s hard to explain… it’s too complicated,” Zhou Yunzhen murmured with a sigh.

Su Ruo knew she wouldn’t say anything right away, and it wasn’t appropriate to force her. Fine—no rush. Let’s see what kind of trick you’re planning.

“So, where are we going now?” Su Ruo asked as she started the car. “Find a place to sit?”

“No need to trouble yourself. I’m staying at a hotel right now. If you don’t mind, we can go there and talk.”

“A hotel?” Su Ruo asked instinctively.

“Yes. I moved out of my home. I don’t want to go back… and I don’t want to be alone either,” Zhou Yunzhen said dully, looking utterly desolate.

“That’s fine. I’m free at home anyway. I’ll take you back to the hotel first,” Su Ruo said lightly. “If anything comes up, they’ll contact me.”

“Ruo Ruo… thank you,” Zhou Yunzhen said softly.

She turned her head to gaze blankly out the window. Su Ruo glanced at her, then curled her lips into a faint, inscrutable smile.

After arriving at the hotel, Zhou Yunzhen led Su Ruo upstairs and into the room.

Following behind her, Su Ruo looked around, clicking her tongue inwardly. This place is really luxurious. One night here must cost a fortune.

“Sit down for a bit. I’ll get you some water,” Zhou Yunzhen said with a smile, about to stand up.

Su Ruo quickly reached out to stop her and shook her head. “No need. I drank a lot before coming out. If I drink more, I’ll turn into a water barrel.”

To be honest, she didn’t dare drink it. When it came to Zhou Yunzhen, Su Ruo viewed every move with the most malicious suspicion. What if something had been added to the water?

“Alright then,” Zhou Yunzhen didn’t insist.

They chatted idly for a while longer. Seeing Zhou Yunzhen still rambling on like a resentful wife, Su Ruo grew impatient.

What exactly does this woman want? She keeps circling around without getting to the point. Is she just stalling me?

“Yunzhen, what’s going on with you?” Su Ruo asked bluntly. “Did something happen at home?”

“Yes,” Zhou Yunzhen said quietly, looking at her. “Something happened.”

The look in her eyes gave Su Ruo a strange, unsettling feeling. Before she could react, Zhou Yunzhen made her move.

Zhou Yunzhen had training—how could Su Ruo, who was practically helpless, compete with her? In just a couple of swift movements, Su Ruo’s hands were bound behind her back with a rope.

Inside, Su Ruo felt like crying without tears. Damn it. Just as expected—like a weasel paying a New Year’s call to a chicken.

She even kept the rope under the pillow—so convenient, just grab it and go.

“What does this mean?” Su Ruo’s face turned cold. “Don’t tell me you’re joking.”

“Joking?” Zhou Yunzhen echoed.

She clearly couldn’t be bothered to pretend anymore. The pitiful, weary façade vanished, replaced by a cold expression and a hint of viciousness in her eyes.

“Su Ruo, I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. You don’t need to be too surprised. There are even bigger surprises waiting for you—ones you’ll never forget.”

Her face twisted with malice. She smiled, yet her eyes were sharp and venomous. The face that once made people feel as if bathed in spring sunshine now looked downright ferocious.

A strong sense of foreboding surged in Su Ruo’s heart. No way… it can’t be that cliché, right?!

“Zhou Yunzhen, let me go! What are you doing—are you crazy?!”

Su Ruo struggled and shouted. Her panic and shock seemed to oddly please Zhou Yunzhen.

“Yes, I am crazy,” Zhou Yunzhen said. “I was driven crazy by you people long ago! The happier you are, the crazier I become. You have no idea how badly I want to tear you apart every time I see you!”

“You ask what happened to me? I’ll tell you—everything that’s happened to me today is thanks to you!”

“W-what are you talking about? Yunzhen, calm down! Let me go!” Su Ruo said, terrified now, her face turning deathly pale.

“Let you go?” Zhou Yunzhen sneered. “We’re already at this point—do you really think I can let you go? I have nothing left anyway. What’s there to hesitate about? Dragging you down with me doesn’t sound so bad.”

She stood over Su Ruo, looking down at her, her voice hoarse and gloomy.

“Are you scared? Want me to let you go? That’s not impossible. Let’s make a deal. If you agree… I might let you go today.”

Su Ruo stared at her in shock. Hearing the word “deal,” she asked instinctively, “What?”

Zhou Yunzhen bent down slightly and whispered near her face, “Give Xi Yuechen to me. How about that?”

“What?!” Su Ruo exclaimed in disbelief.

“Didn’t you hear me clearly? I said—give Xi Yuechen to me. Give him to me, and I’ll let you go.”

Su Ruo was completely stunned. Zhou Yunzhen’s words hit her like a bolt from the blue, leaving her dazed and unable to react.

“Heh. Surprised?” Zhou Yunzhen sneered. “I might as well say it outright—I’ve liked Xi Yuechen for a long time. What do you think? Will you fulfill me?”

“You… you’re talking nonsense… how could that be…” Su Ruo muttered stiffly, her face as pale as paper.

“Hmph. What’s impossible about it?” Zhou Yunzhen said coldly. “Do you really think I’m joking now?”

“I endured for so long, suffered so much humiliation, only to end up like this. You look quite pleased with yourself, don’t you? Unfortunately for you, your good days won’t last much longer. Every bit of pain I’ve suffered—I’ll repay it to you, one by one.”

“No! This is your fault to begin with!” Su Ruo shook her head in disbelief. “I treated you as a friend, but you were acting all along! I trusted you wholeheartedly, and you were plotting against me, trying to steal my husband!”

“How did you become like this?! The commander was never yours! How could you think you’d succeed?!”

Her face drained of all color. It was clear Zhou Yunzhen’s words had dealt her a heavy blow.

“Friend?” Zhou Yunzhen laughed coldly. “Do you know how disgusted I felt every time I talked to you? But I endured it—for Xi Yuechen, I had to. And what did I get in return?”

“Su Ruo, don’t even think about walking away unscathed today.”

The ominous feeling in Su Ruo’s heart grew stronger. “Zhou Yunzhen, are you insane? Think rationally! This is your unrequited obsession—how is that my fault?! You have no right to pin this on me! Stealing my husband was wrong from the start—you were never going to get what you wanted! Let me go!”

“Hmph. If it weren’t for you, how could I have failed?” Zhou Yunzhen sneered. “You’re happy, aren’t you? Xi Yuechen’s heart was stolen by you long ago, wasn’t it?”

“Fine. I’d like to see what’s so special about you—what makes people unable to let go.”

Su Ruo cursed inwardly. Damn it. This lunatic’s words are matching my worst fears exactly. Why am I always running into this kind of disgusting mess?!

“What do you want to do?” she asked warily.

“You’ll find out soon,” Zhou Yunzhen said slowly. “I’ll give you an experience you’ll never forget. Let’s see—once you’re ‘dirty,’ will your precious commander still want you?”

“Zhou Yunzhen, you’re disgusting and pitiful,” Su Ruo snapped, her voice trembling with rage. “Trash like you—third-rate scum—even without me, the commander would never look at you!”

Her eyes hardened. “You’ll regret this.”

“Su Ruo, don’t think I wouldn’t dare hit you,” Zhou Yunzhen sneered. “I’m pitiful? You’ll be even more pitiful soon. Watching you suffer makes me happy—why would I regret anything?”
