Seeing Zhou Yun Zhen’s slightly flustered expression, Su Ruo felt something was off. Logically, she should have looked embarrassed or awkward—so why the panic? Was she really doing something shady?
But what shady business could Zhou Yun Zhen possibly have with her?
Su Ruo was puzzled, but there was no time to speculate. “Why were you going through my phone? What were you looking for?”
Zhou Yun Zhen immediately regretted it. She was already feeling guilty enough, and now being questioned by Su Ruo with that displeased expression made her feel like her face was on fire. She wished she could disappear on the spot.
“I—I saw you feeding the baby, so I just wandered around casually. I noticed the door to this room was open and got curious and came in. Then I saw your phone and thought I’d look at the baby’s photos. Really, I didn’t look at anything else. I just thought there might be photos of the baby on your phone, so…”
Zhou Yun Zhen hurriedly explained, not caring how plausible her excuse sounded or whether Su Ruo would believe it. At that moment, this was the only lie she could think of.
“So, Yun Zhen, you were so eager to see my son? Why didn’t you just tell me earlier? He’s right next door. I guess this is my fault—you came all this way to see my son, and I unknowingly got in your way, forcing you to go through my phone with so much trouble.”
Su Ruo’s words were sharp, polite but cold. Though she said it was her own fault, her tone and expression held no hint of genuine remorse. Zhou Yun Zhen’s excuse—looking at the baby’s photos?—was too unbelievable. The baby was right next door! How desperate must she have been to pick up her phone without saying a word? That was basically sneaking a peek.
Moreover, though Zhou Yun Zhen had regained some composure after her initial panic, there was still a trace of guilt in her expression. Her eyes darted away, avoiding Su Ruo’s gaze. At this point, if Su Ruo couldn’t see there was something off, Zhou Yun Zhen would truly feel foolish.
Zhou Yun Zhen was momentarily speechless. She had no idea how to respond. Everything had happened too suddenly—there was no time to prepare. All she felt now was panic and regret. If only she hadn’t touched Su Ruo’s phone, or at least had put it down after seeing the number. Things wouldn’t have escalated like this.
Would Su Ruo… notice anything?
Her usual calm composure was long gone. She kept reassuring herself: it’s nothing, Su Ruo only saw me go through her phone, she doesn’t know what I looked at. Besides, I really didn’t see anything. I have to stay calm.
Yes, Su Ruo didn’t know what she had seen. But that didn’t stop her from starting to dislike Zhou Yun Zhen. Su Ruo already had some reservations about her, and now those reservations had grown, leaving her with a lingering irritation.
Entering her room uninvited was wrong enough—what if there had been something she shouldn’t see? And going through her phone? Whether or not there was a secret inside, that behavior was rude and annoying.
Thus, Zhou Yun Zhen’s carefully cultivated image as a well-mannered, composed young lady completely crumbled in Su Ruo’s eyes—her outward elegance no longer matched her behavior.
“Ruo Ruo, don’t be angry. I… I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have touched your phone. Really, I’m sorry. I just thought we were close enough that looking at the album wouldn’t hurt, but I see now how thoughtless that was. No matter what, I shouldn’t have touched your phone. I know I went too far. Please don’t be angry, Ruo Ruo. I feel so uneasy. You’re my first friend, and I don’t want to lose you over this. I really didn’t see anything. Please don’t be mad. I’ll never touch your phone again.”
Zhou Yun Zhen spoke sincerely, her face full of regret. But as Su Ruo looked at her gentle, elegant expression, she felt it somehow didn’t seem real.
“‘We’re close, so looking at the album is fine’—what does that even mean? Are you implying I’m petty? And how do you know there’s nothing in there to see? What if there really was something private? You saw it, so how can I be sure you didn’t look?!”
Now Su Ruo started forming opinions about Zhou Yun Zhen. Whatever she said or did now seemed wrong, especially considering her usually refined demeanor contrasted sharply with secretly going through her phone.
It all felt so hypocritical.
Zhou Yun Zhen’s regret and self-reproach seemed pitiful, but Su Ruo felt nothing. If she really regretted it, why did she touch the phone in the first place? If Su Ruo hadn’t come in, she’d still be going through it. Was this genuine remorse or just an excuse?
How old is she? Doesn’t she understand right from wrong? She knew she shouldn’t, yet she did it anyway. That’s intentional. She’s not a child—basic morality and manners shouldn’t need teaching.
No matter what excuses Zhou Yun Zhen made now, Su Ruo assumed it was deliberate. So even if her words sounded apologetic, most of it was false.
Yet, at this moment, Zhou Yun Zhen’s regret was genuine. She truly regretted it, bewitched by her own curiosity, unable to stop herself.
“Alright, alright, let’s leave it. Don’t blame yourself. I was just a little upset—after all, you’re the first person to go through my phone. I may have overreacted. Don’t mind it.”
Zhou Yun Zhen had apologized enough, and Su Ruo, to avoid tension, decided to play along.
After all, pretending is something anyone can do. Like Su Ruo now, she clearly minded deeply but put on a gracious smile to keep the situation smooth, pretending to forgive.
Seeing this, Zhou Yun Zhen quietly breathed a sigh of relief—at least Su Ruo trusted her.
Zhou Yun Zhen assumed Su Ruo’s earlier reaction came from being spoiled as a child, used to people bending to her will. Seeing someone touch her phone felt like an invasion, naturally causing displeasure. She didn’t realize Su Ruo already had some reservations about her; otherwise, her reaction wouldn’t have been so intense.
As for what Zhou Yun Zhen actually saw, Su Ruo would never suspect. There was no conflict of interest between them, so there was no worry about her thoughts being discovered.
At the moment, Su Ruo simply disliked Zhou Yun Zhen’s behavior, nothing more. The situation might evolve later, but Zhou Yun Zhen’s expectations couldn’t dictate it.
“The baby is asleep now. If you don’t mind him with his eyes closed, shall we go see him?”
Su Ruo smiled, though without the previous warmth. Zhou Yun Zhen didn’t mind; if Su Ruo acted perfectly cheerful, she would have been more concerned.
Emotions don’t change that quickly—cold one moment, smiling the next. Unless it’s an act. If Su Ruo could do that, Zhou Yun Zhen should be even more worried.
Slowly, Zhou Yun Zhen relaxed, no longer flustered, though being caught still left her embarrassed. Her behavior was so far from the composed image she usually portrayed.
“Sure! I really want to see your little treasure.”
Seeing Zhou Yun Zhen chat and laugh as if nothing had happened, Su Ruo inwardly grimaced—her composure was unnervingly controlled.
After briefly seeing the baby, Zhou Yun Zhen didn’t stay long before taking her leave.
A smile can be faked, but natural ease cannot. She knew it would be awkward to act as if nothing had happened. Su Ruo likely wasn’t entirely pleased yet, so Zhou Yun Zhen chose not to be inappropriate.
After seeing her out, Su Ruo’s expression changed, the irritation now visible in her eyes.
Zhou Yun Zhen was acting increasingly strangely. Why the initial guilt? Looking at a phone—what moral panic was that?
Clearly, her later words were lies. No matter why she went through the phone, it couldn’t have been just to see the baby’s photos. How did she even know they were there? For such an uncertain guess, she risked angering Su Ruo?
If someone casually touches another’s phone, nobody would be happy—it’s private.
The strangest thing was Zhou Yun Zhen’s reaction. Even though there was nothing worth seeing on Su Ruo’s phone, Zhou Yun Zhen acted as if she had seen something significant. They were just acquaintances—hardly confidantes.
So what exactly did she want to see to be so utterly flustered?
