RMM -Chapter 244 The Intruder

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 7 min read 244 of 365 32

Zhou Yun Zhen stood at the doorway, frozen, her gaze fixed on everything inside the room. When her eyes landed on the bed, they refused to move any further.

Were they really sharing the same bed?

A little flustered, she averted her eyes but found her feet moving on their own toward the bed.

Sitting on the edge, she couldn’t help but glance at the bed again. Her hand reached toward the pillows; her fair, slender fingers contrasted nicely with the pale green pillow.

“I wonder which side Xi Yuechen sleeps on… could it be this one?”

She murmured softly, almost tenderly, running her hand over the pillow, her voice carrying an endless affection.

Looking at the two pillows side by side, Zhou Yun Zhen’s expression became hazy. She imagined countless nights where Su Ruo and Xi Yuechen slept together on this bed—pillow to pillow, either snuggling close or entwined in intimacy. Thinking of this, her face changed, and she subconsciously gripped the pillow tighter.

They already had a child. After this period, would they continue to be affectionate on this bed? Were they planning to have another?

No, Su Ruo already had Xi Yuechen’s child. Wasn’t that enough? Just the thought of them being intimate made Zhou Yun Zhen feel as if a knife were twisting in her chest, the pain almost unbearable.

She could no longer sit on the bed. Though it might still carry Xi Yuechen’s scent, it was overwhelmingly Su Ruo’s. More than that, it was the mixed scent of the two of them together.

Rising, she quickly composed herself and glanced toward the door. No sound came from outside. Does feeding a child take this long?

Zhou Yun Zhen was puzzled. She had no experience with this, so she assumed Su Ruo was still nursing Xi Zi. She didn’t know that Su Ruo was following her usual routine: after feeding, she would play with Xi Zi for a while, pat his back, and so on, which naturally took longer.

Seeing that Su Ruo wasn’t coming anytime soon, Zhou Yun Zhen looked around the room again and noticed a door that was probably the bathroom.

She walked over and pushed it open.

Indeed, it was the bathroom. She examined it carefully, her eyes carrying a hint of scrutiny.

At the sink, she noticed neatly arranged shelves with various bottles and jars, which she curiously inspected.

These were probably all Su Ruo’s. While scanning, she noticed several bottles for men.

Picking one up, she saw it was aftershave. So this was the brand he used. Zhou Yun Zhen pondered the bottle, a faint smile playing on her lips. She put it down and examined the other items carefully, memorizing the brands, then surveyed the bathroom itself. Satisfied, she nodded and left, her face still wearing a pleasant smile.

But why hadn’t Su Ruo returned yet? Zhou Yun Zhen wanted more time to explore the room, but the nursing seemed to be taking forever.

Assuming Su Ruo might have come back, she didn’t linger in the room, thinking it better to leave before being caught. Even if she could claim she was “just looking around,” who knew whether Su Ruo would care?

However, just as she neared the door, Zhou Yun Zhen glanced back at the bed and froze.

That was… Su Ruo’s phone.

Unsure why, her expression faltered. She looked toward the doorway again; still no movement. Biting her lip, she stepped back toward the bed.

Sitting on the edge, she confirmed that Su Ruo hadn’t returned, then reached for the phone at the head of the bed.

No one will notice, she kept telling herself as her fingers lit up the screen.

The moment she saw the phone, her heart was instantly drawn to it. What could be inside? Photos? Messages? Or some secrets?

Surely there would be information about Xi Yuechen. How could there not be? She wondered how they communicated—calls, texts, or chat apps?

And the photos she had sent to Su Ruo last time—were they still there?

The more she thought, the more restless she became, and her desire to look grew stronger. She decided to check, reasoning that as long as Su Ruo didn’t know, it would be fine.

Yes, just act quickly. It’s only a glance; what could possibly go wrong?

Taking a deep breath, she unlocked the phone and opened it, staring at the screen in confusion. Where should she start?

Perhaps the contacts. She didn’t know Xi Yuechen’s number yet—perfect opportunity to note it down.

She could have asked Zhou Tingzhang, but she didn’t want her father to notice anything amiss. After all, what legitimate reason would she have to contact Xi Yuechen?

Xi Yuechen’s number was easy to find. In the call log, there were only a few calls: He Wen, Duan Wei, and prominently, several entries for “Yuechen.”

Zhou Yun Zhen’s expression shifted. Were they really that close? So many calls—one every day, and lengthy at that. Could someone like Xi Yuechen really chat for so long? Or was he just listening while Su Ruo talked?

Regardless, Su Ruo’s long daily calls to Xi Yuechen stung Zhou Yun Zhen. Even if Xi Yuechen merely listened, it proved one thing: Su Ruo held weight in his heart.

Realizing this, Zhou Yun Zhen’s face darkened, her eyes filled with both sadness and unwillingness. Yet, she didn’t forget to memorize Xi Yuechen’s number.

Zhou Yun Zhen had always been sharp, and things she cared about deeply naturally received her full attention. So the number was now firmly imprinted in her memory.

After memorizing it, she wanted to check the messages. With such long calls every day, were there texts too? She wanted to see what they were discussing.

Immersed in the phone, she relaxed her vigilance toward the surroundings, completely unaware that Su Ruo had arrived at the door.

Having finished feeding Xi Zi and fussing with him a bit, Su Ruo suddenly remembered Zhou Yun Zhen was upstairs.

“Oh, my head! How could I be so forgetful? The same mistake twice in such a short time!”

Patting her head, she murmured in self-reproach and hurried to the room, intending to find Zhou Yun Zhen. Xi Zi was already asleep.

She remembered Zhou Yun Zhen had followed her upstairs, but the quiet, empty second floor made her doubt it. Perhaps she was downstairs.

However, seeing her bedroom door wide open, Su Ruo was puzzled. She was sure she hadn’t left it like that.

Did Mom go in and forget to close it?

Walking toward the room to close the door—after all, it looked untidy to leave it wide open—Su Ruo had no idea who was actually inside: Zhou Yun Zhen, sitting on her bed, flipping through her phone.

Su Ruo froze.

Zhou Yun Zhen?

She immediately recognized the intruder. But why sit on her bed?

Her discomfort deepened upon noticing what Zhou Yun Zhen held: her phone.

What was she looking through?

“What are you doing?”

Su Ruo’s tone was firm, her expression displeased. Could she be happy? Zhou Yun Zhen had not only entered her room and sat on her bed, but also was going through her phone. What right did she have?

Normally, even Xi Yuechen wouldn’t touch her phone, let alone anyone else. If it were He Wen, Su Ruo would merely smile and say a few words, not care at all.

But Zhou Yun Zhen’s sneaky behavior made Su Ruo uneasy.

A phone is private. Since when was their relationship close enough for her to rummage through it? Although there was nothing untoward on it.

As for the photos Zhou Yun Zhen had sent, Su Ruo had deleted them long ago after revealing everything to Xi Yuechen. Such things were better destroyed—if seen by others, it would be impossible to explain.

Just as Zhou Yun Zhen opened the messages, she was startled by Su Ruo’s sudden voice.

“Ruo… Ruo Ruo!”

Dropping the phone quickly, Zhou Yun Zhen stood up, staring at Su Ruo and calling out unnaturally, clearly frightened. Her forced composure had little effect.

After all, guilty hearts panic, especially when caught in the act. How could she remain calm? She was already flustered.
