RMM – Chapter 22 A Perfect Pair

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 7 min read 23 of 365 44

“Mm, okay, I’ll transfer the money this afternoon… It’s fine, I’m an investor, of course, I need to invest money.”

“You don’t have to be so polite. We’re partners now. Even though I introduced He Wen, Siqi has real strength—otherwise, how could it have improved so quickly?”

After hanging up the phone, Su Ruo shrugged lightly and smiled. Indeed, being reborn had its advantages—otherwise, how could she have stumbled upon the golden opportunity that was Siqi? Now that Siqi was slowly getting on the right track, all she had to do was sit back and watch the money roll in.

Still, He Wen was truly a talent—he had adapted so quickly and was doing a great job.

“Commander, I’m heading out later to celebrate He Wen’s success,” Su Ruo called out toward the study with its open door, reporting her plans for the afternoon.

“Mm, go ahead.” Xi Yuechen’s deep voice responded.

Recently, the atmosphere between them had become more relaxed and natural. Of course, that was thanks to the “zero-distance contact” they had that night, which had accelerated their relationship, bringing about a fundamental shift.

Naturally, ever since that night, such beneficial “zero-distance contact” had been reenacted from time to time. Su Ruo, too, had grown accustomed to it, accepting it without hesitation. As a result, Colonel Xi’s days had been particularly harmonious and fulfilling, and his mood had been nothing but sunny skies.

However… he would be returning to the military the day after tomorrow.

Xi Yuechen frowned at the thought. Unlike before, he didn’t feel as at ease about it—there was an odd sense of frustration.

He glanced up at Su Ruo, who was getting up from the sofa. After a slight pause, he put down the book in his hands and raised his voice, “I’ll go with you.”

“Huh?” Su Ruo looked at him in surprise as he walked out of the study, clearly puzzled.

In the past, he had never taken the initiative to get involved with her social circle. Even if she had plans, she would just mention it in passing and go on her own—he never interfered. What was different today?

Feeling slightly awkward under her gaze, Xi Yuechen cleared his throat and said, “I’m not familiar with your friends yet. It’s a good chance to get to know them.”

“Oh, alright then.”

Su Ruo didn’t think much of it and agreed casually. If he wanted to meet her friends, so be it. It was rare for him to take such an interest, and it would be nice to go out together. Still, why did she feel an unexpected ripple of happiness inside?

He Wen hadn’t expected Su Ruo to host a celebration for her—let alone at the extravagant National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance. She had dismissed Mu You as not grand enough. Tsk, tsk. Truly, only a wealthy boss would think like this—finding ways to spend big money.

Siqi’s success benefited not just Su Ruo but also He Wen. Though she didn’t have as much money to take home as Su Ruo, she had gained invaluable experience—something money couldn’t buy. The sense of accomplishment, especially when she saw her family’s elders look at her with newfound respect, was incredibly satisfying. She was overjoyed but couldn’t help but marvel at Su Ruo’s sharp business acumen. Was she just naturally gifted? Her instincts were terrifyingly precise…

However, the moment He Wen saw Su Ruo and Xi Yuechen walk in together, all her excitement froze on her face.

At the same time, the once lively atmosphere in the private room—comparable to a drum and gong festival—suddenly fell into a stunned silence.

Everyone stared, dumbfounded, at the couple who had just stepped through the door.

No one could blame them. It was a natural reaction.

Leaving aside the fact that they were already intimidated by Xi Yuechen and didn’t dare act recklessly around him, seeing the two of them enter together—looking every bit the loving, inseparable couple—was just too much to process.

“Uh… Haha, Colonel Xi is here too! What an honor! Haha… But, Ruoruo, why didn’t you give us a heads-up?” He Wen forced out an awkward laugh as she greeted them.

“What’s there to notify? Can’t we come?”

As Su Ruo spoke, she walked further into the room and casually handed her coat to Xi Yuechen, who naturally reached out to take it.

The scene was so dazzling that it practically blinded everyone in the room.

How were they supposed to ignore something like that?!

“Of course, of course, you’re welcome anytime. It’s just… such an unexpected honor. And… hard to believe.”

He Wen stared at the seamless coordination between the Xi couple, her voice slightly stiff as she spoke. Was this really the high-and-mighty Colonel Xi they had all known?

“Hmph, as long as you’re honored. Hey, don’t just stand there—carry on with whatever you were doing,” Su Ruo said as she sat down.

Xi Yuechen also sat down and casually scanned the private room, as if reinforcing Su Ruo’s words.

It was only then that the others retracted their intense gazes, turning back to their hushed conversations. However, the relaxed atmosphere from earlier was gone, and their eyes would occasionally and involuntarily drift toward Su Ruo.

Feng Weijia glanced at Liang Bo’an, who had his head lowered with an expressionless face, and patted his shoulder lightly. Liang Bo’an lifted his head, forced a smile, then looked at Su Ruo—who was engaged in conversation with He Wen—before lowering his head again, drinking his wine with a hint of despondency.

Xi Yuechen, who had been quietly observing his surroundings the entire time, didn’t miss these subtle actions. He cast a brief glance at Liang Bo’an, the corners of his lips curving up slightly before he looked away.

Seeing his older brother’s reaction, Xi Yuehui broke into a cold sweat. He had lived with him for so many years, but this was the first time he had ever seen his brother make such an expression. He looked toward Liang Bo’an, who was drinking, and frowned slightly.

“It’s rare for my brother to join our gathering—thanks to my sister-in-law, of course,” Xi Yuehui stood up and said, scanning the room before adding with a grin, “They really are a perfect match, aren’t they?”

A round of laughter erupted.

Su Ruo, for once, felt a bit embarrassed. She glanced at Xi Yuechen beside her and only relaxed when she saw that he didn’t seem to react at all.

“Xi Yuehui, if you don’t speak, no one will mistake you for being mute. Why are you so noisy? Today’s main character is the person beside me,” Su Ruo said, shooting a sideways glance at the grinning Xi Yuehui.

“That’s right! I’m the star today, don’t get it wrong. Come on, everyone, if you’ve got any good gifts to offer, bring them out now!” He Wen said, looking smug.

With that, everyone’s attention naturally shifted to He Wen, who was basking in the spotlight, and they started chattering with exaggerated congratulations.

“As for me and the Commander, we won’t be giving anything else—just 3% of Siqi’s shares.”

As expected, the moment Su Ruo spoke, a chorus of gasps and exclamations filled the room.

A local tycoon. A filthy rich local tycoon…

He Wen turned to her, raising an eyebrow in surprise. “Did I hear that right?”

“If you don’t want it, forget it,” Su Ruo replied nonchalantly. Then she turned to Xi Yuechen with the menu in hand. “Commander, these are the dishes I ordered. See if there’s anything else you want.”

Seeing that Su Ruo really seemed about to retract the offer, He Wen panicked. What a joke—such an opportunity wasn’t something you could just pass up!

“Of course I want it! How could I refuse a reward from Lady Ruo?” she said hastily.

Xi Yuechen listened to their playful bickering as he took the menu. His mood, already bright, lifted even further.

His stomach had always been sensitive and couldn’t handle overly strong flavors, so he preferred lighter food. The dishes Su Ruo had ordered were clearly chosen with his dietary preferences in mind, and there were even two of his favorite dishes among them.

He handed the menu to Xi Yuehui, indicating that he had nothing to add.

Xi Yuehui took the menu, glanced at it, and then shot his older brother a knowing smile—a look that Xi Yuechen, as expected, completely ignored.

Things seemed to be developing nicely. At the very least, they were starting to look like a real married couple. And Su Ruo, it turned out, wasn’t entirely indifferent to his brother.

It seemed like it was finally time to report back to the matriarch at home—maybe now she could breathe a little easier.
