Su Ruo’s startled scream was like a stone thrown into a calm pond, sending waves of excitement through Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang.
Milk had finally come in, which meant they could feed little Xi Zi! But the next second, Su Ruo’s joy was immediately doused—how could she feed the baby when he was still in the incubator?
Zhang Huaqing, however, remained calm. She had prepared for this long ago, back when Su Ruo was pregnant—just in case—by getting a breast pump.
Ahem, the saying goes: “Be prepared in advance to avoid trouble later.” Zhang Huaqing’s foresight was finally paying off. When Su Heng first returned to City B to get supplies, she had him bring the breast pump from home. With the baby in the incubator, this device was now essential. Otherwise, how would the grandson get any breast milk?
Before Su Ruo could even make a troubled face, Zhang Huaqing had already pulled out the stored pump. “Quick, use it, or it’s going to hurt later. Today the nurse will feed the baby breast milk—no more formula.”
Su Ruo felt embarrassed at the sight of the pump. How was she supposed to use that? Imagining it in her mind only made it feel more awkward…
Seeing her reluctance, Zhang Huaqing gently coaxed, “If you don’t use this, how will the milk come out? The child can’t drink milk if it doesn’t come out, and if your breasts get engorged, you’ll be uncomfortable too. Be good. Once the baby is out of the incubator, you won’t need this anymore.”
Su Ruo still looked uneasy, but the initial sense of rejection was gone. She had thought it through—finally, there was milk! How could she let it remain unused? Besides… she’d heard engorgement could be painful.
Looking at the device in Zhang Huaqing’s hands, Su Ruo frowned and took a deep breath. Fine, whatever—there was nothing to be embarrassed about. Many women used this; she wasn’t the only one. For the baby’s sake, she would just do it.
“All right, then I’ll do it,” Su Ruo said, her expression tragically heroic, which made Xi Yuechen smile inwardly and curl the corner of his lips.
The little woman was really coming alive—good.
“Hey, Mom! Stop! Stop!”
Before Zhang Huaqing could lift Su Ruo’s shirt, Su Ruo panicked and shouted, pushing Zhang Huaqing’s arm.
“What’s wrong now?” Zhang Huaqing asked, puzzled. Hadn’t they just agreed? Why the sudden problem?
Su Ruo’s eyes scanned the ward, stopping at Xi Yuechen and Shen Liang by the bedside, noting that while the door was closed, it wasn’t locked. Anyone could come in at any moment…
“Not clearing the room?” Was Zhang Huaqing planning a live performance?
Su Ruo asked, slightly frustrated. Even if it was her mother-in-law, she still felt embarrassed!
“You kid! There’s no outsider here. Are you shy in front of your own husband and mother-in-law?” Zhang Huaqing gently chided, withdrawing her hand.
Not just the mother-in-law… even you, thought Su Ruo, pouting. She looked at the two others in the room and quickly made a decision.
“Mom, could you and Grandma step out? I’ll do it with the chief here, okay?” Su Ruo suggested with a small grin. Here, she could only be honest with the chief. If she had to expose herself, it would only be in front of him.
Even thinking about using the pump in front of Zhang Huaqing made her feel awkward.
“That won’t do. You two don’t know anything. Let me do it,” Zhang Huaqing said firmly, refusing without a second thought.
She had given birth twice and knew how pumping worked. But what did these two know? They’d just make a mess!
Shen Liang also disagreed. Looking at his son, he said, “Yes, you two don’t know anything. Let us handle it. Why are you so shy?”
Even if he could handle everything else, pumping was unfamiliar. He’d never even seen a pump before. If he tried, it would only create trouble.
“Let us try, at least once. Who knows, it might work? Then I can do it myself next time. I can’t call you every time. If I do it myself, I’ll be self-sufficient. Let us try!”
Su Ruo persisted. She had to try herself; otherwise, she’d need help every time she pumped. The baby would still be in the incubator for a few more days. Better to learn now. If there was a second child, she’d be ready.
By now, Su Ruo had completely forgotten how dangerous giving birth had been. Only a few days had passed, yet she was already thinking about the next baby.
Zhang Huaqing was about to scold her stubbornness, wondering if this was something to experiment with.
But before she could speak, Xi Yuechen, who had been silent until now, said, “Mom, let’s try it.”
When Xi Yuechen spoke, it carried weight. People tended to follow strong figures, no matter the reason.
Just now, Su Ruo’s request seemed trivial, and Shen Liang and Zhang Huaqing rejected it outright. But once Xi Yuechen spoke, the situation changed—it suddenly became serious.
Seeing this, Su Ruo raised an eyebrow at him, amused. Same situation, different reactions. What was mischief for her became serious when he said it. Tsk, tsk.
But whatever, she just wanted it to succeed. Su Ruo thought this indifferently. She also wondered why the usually strict Xi Yuechen now seemed supportive. Strange… very strange.
Su Ruo stopped arguing. With Xi Yuechen on her side, nothing was impossible. She just waited for Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang to leave.
Still… would her omnipotent chief really know how to operate a breast pump? Could he actually extract milk? Heh, who knew—everything was uncertain.
