Su Ruo woke up at night. When she opened her eyes, only Zhang Huaqing, Shen Liang, and Xi Yuechen were in the ward; everyone else had been sent away by Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang. They said staying there would take up space, make people anxious, and it was better to rest elsewhere and come back in the morning.
Su Feng and Xi Jian’an, after seeing their precious grandson, had rushed back to B City that afternoon. After all, neither of them came here on official business, and staying here openly could have caused trouble. They had also arrived in too much of a hurry, leaving matters in B City unsettled, so they had to return to work—skipping work was not an option.
Now that Su Ruo was safe, and the precious grandson had been seen, everything was joyful. There was no point for the two old men to linger; it was better to go back first.
Xi Jian’an, on his way back, was still thinking how fortunate nothing had gone wrong. Luckily, the family patriarch wasn’t at home and didn’t know about this incident; otherwise, he might have caused trouble.
Coincidentally, the Xi family patriarch had gone back to a small southern town these past few days to visit his wife. So, even if something happened to Su Ruo, he wouldn’t know, and everyone once again tacitly kept it from him.
At this moment, Zhang Huaqing finally regained calm. She frowned as she looked at the sleeping Su Ruo, her face full of worry. When she had first learned that her daughter had a difficult labor and went through such a dangerous situation, she had nearly fainted.
No one dared to touch Su Ruo. They knew she had undergone a cesarean section and didn’t know the state of her incision. They feared accidentally hurting her, so they watched her sleep intently.
Xi Yuechen sat at the edge of Su Ruo’s bed, his demeanor the same as that morning—silent, unwavering, refusing to leave or speak, let alone eat—just quietly guarding her.
Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang sat on the sofa to the side, giving him the prime spot without competing.
Seeing Xi Yuechen like this, they couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotion and relief. The young couple’s bond was growing stronger, and as elders, it was reassuring to witness.
Shen Liang thought his son was becoming increasingly sensible. This time was dangerous, but everything turned out fine. After this, he believed his son would cherish Ruo Ruo more and that fatherhood would add richness to his life. Life from now on would probably be wonderful, and he would surely be happy.
Zhang Huaqing, meanwhile, fully sided with her daughter. Seeing her son-in-law care so deeply for her daughter made her happy. Letting her daughter marry Yuechen had indeed been the right decision.
Xi Yuechen may have seemed cold and indifferent, but Zhang Huaqing knew that once someone like him cared, he would do so wholeheartedly. Others would find it difficult to enter his heart. The young man was talented and reliable, which had made her consider letting Ruo Ruo marry him. Seeing them now, the couple’s feelings were genuine and touching.
Just as the two elders felt comforted, Su Ruo’s eyelids twitched slightly but quickly settled again, as if nothing had happened.
Even such a small movement was caught by Xi Yuechen, who had been watching her the entire time. His eyes widened in a flash of joy, and he leaned close to her ear, whispering, “Ruo Ruo? Are you awake?”
Su Ruo was indeed awake, but having just emerged from deep sleep, she felt groggy and exhausted. Her eyelids were as heavy as if weighed down by a thousand pounds; she couldn’t lift them.
Suddenly, she heard a familiar voice calling her name, so gentle yet ingrained in her very being that her heart jolted. It took a moment for her to realize whose voice it was.
Her commander? Why was it his voice? Su Ruo thought hazily, trying to open her eyes or ask a question, but her body was utterly weak; she couldn’t even move a finger.
Xi Yuechen could see that she had awakened but was too tired to respond.
Relaxing slightly, he reached out to touch her forehead. Normally smooth and pale, her skin now looked ghostly and dull. His fingers brushed it gently, careful not to hurt her.
Xi Yuechen, likely unaware of it himself, was wearing an expression of extreme tenderness, a faint smile breaking his usually cold lips. The warmth in his eyes reflected in the dim light, sparkling with joy.
Though his touch was gentle, the roughness of his hands still came through, giving Su Ruo, in her daze, a deep sense of security. Her frantic heart began to calm.
Xi Yuechen remained motionless, watching her wake slowly. He observed her eyelids twitch, her long lashes quiver, and finally, as life returned to her face, a warm, satisfied expression appeared on his.
Even a simple blink seemed to stretch time. Every movement of Su Ruo was etched into Xi Yuechen’s heart, making him feel alive.
Su Ruo didn’t know where she was or her condition, but one thing she was certain of: her commander was beside her, the familiar touch, warmth, and presence etched into her heart.
Later, Su Ruo thought about the moment she opened her eyes. Xi Yuechen, usually so unyielding, looked so warm and joyful. His deep black eyes shone brighter than any diamond she had ever seen. She wondered many times if the glimmer in his eyes at that moment was the mysterious thing called tenderness.
Su Ruo stared at him dumbfounded, her mind fuzzy.
Xi Yuechen’s expression didn’t change. His hand, resting by her temple, moved slightly, his thumb brushing her eye corner gently, his lips curling slightly upward.
Su Ruo was completely captivated, her dazed brain unable to think of anything else—not where she was or how the baby was.
The two of them silently shared a world of emotion, ignoring Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang who had been anxiously waiting.
Normally, Su Ruo might be excused, but Xi Yuechen too was focused solely on her, forgetting his mother and mother-in-law in the ward. It was uncharacteristic of his usually meticulous nature.
Zhang Huaqing and Shen Liang, seated against the far wall, had their view partially blocked by Xi Yuechen’s tall figure, so they didn’t notice that Su Ruo had awakened. They anxiously waited.
Only when Su Ruo weakly called out “Commander” did they realize she was awake.
“Ruo Ruo! Ruo Ruo, my daughter!”
Zhang Huaqing leapt to her feet and rushed to the bed, tears welling in her eyes. She didn’t care about appearances—her daughter had survived, and she was overwhelmed with joy. Shen Liang also looked blissfully overjoyed, far from his usual refined self.
Su Ruo looked at her tearful, emotional mother, bewildered, and gave a weak smile. She hoarsely said “Mom” while trying to lift herself, but her current state made it impossible; she lost balance and…
“Ugh…” she gasped in pain, her face pale.
Clearly, her incision had been affected.
At her cry, the others’ expressions turned grim. Even Xi Yuechen’s face filled with concern and pain. Shen Liang rushed to call a doctor.
“I’ll get the doctor to check, Ruo Ruo. Hang on!”
Su Ruo, struggling, said, “Mom, I’m fine… come back.” Then it dawned on her that she was in the hospital—Hong Shirong must have brought her here. Wait… the hospital… then… the baby?
Slow as Su Ruo was, she suddenly remembered her son. She recalled the excruciating pain and losing consciousness, knowing nothing afterward.
Panicking, she reached toward her stomach. Xi Yuechen was caught off guard and couldn’t stop her in time.
Once her hands touched her abdomen, it felt like being struck by lightning. Her mind went blank—empty… gone…
A wave of despair spread with the pain. She looked rigidly at Xi Yuechen, tears streaming uncontrollably, lips trembling as she tried to speak.
Everyone watching was terrified. Shen Liang, in panic, ran out, forgetting he could have called the doctor’s bell.
“Ruo Ruo? What’s wrong? Does it hurt?”
Xi Yuechen gripped her hands tightly, his face full of heartbreak. Her condition pierced his heart like countless needles.
“The… baby?” Su Ruo finally managed to ask, trembling.
Xi Yuechen and Zhang Huaqing froze. Her question leapt far beyond what they had expected.
Zhang Huaqing quickly realized—her daughter’s state wasn’t from pain alone, but from fearing for the baby’s safety.
“Ruo Ruo, the baby is fine. He’s healthy, now in the incubator. We’ve seen him. He’s okay, alright, he’s perfectly fine.”
Zhang Huaqing stepped forward, gently hugging Su Ruo, softly comforting her while stroking her shoulders.
Su Ruo remained dazed, listening to the whispers, staring at Xi Yuechen. Only when he nodded did tears finally pour freely, streaming down her face as she cried with a mix of laughter and relief.
Zhang Huaqing and Xi Yuechen flusteredly comforted her, wiping her tears, faces filled with concern and helplessness. When Shen Liang rushed back with the doctor, this was the scene they witnessed.
