Brother Long rambled on and on, and Xi Yuechen felt increasingly annoyed.
Just as Brother Long was on his nth round of praising Xi Yuechen, the one being praised let out a muffled grunt in utter disrespect, as if restraining himself from saying something.
Naturally, Brother Long heard Xi Yuechen’s sound. Finally, he stopped his endless chatter and glanced at Xi Yuechen’s face. It was still pale, and though he was smiling, the forced nature of the smile was clear.
“Oh, look at me, really… I disturbed you just after you woke up. That was really inappropriate,” Brother Long said, patting his own forehead as if he had just realized something. “Serves me right. I got too carried away.”
Although Cheng Yue’s injuries weren’t fatal, they were numerous, and coupled with significant blood loss, even waking up now didn’t mean he felt comfortable. He should be resting, yet Brother Long was still making him listen to all this talk.
After realizing this, Brother Long felt a bit guilty; he really had gotten overexcited.
“It’s fine. Brother Long was just concerned about me.”
Xi Yuechen smiled faintly. As for why Brother Long had gotten so worked up, he understood perfectly—it was all about him rescuing Bai Xiong yesterday.
“Ah, Cheng brother, your words are always pleasant to hear,” Brother Long said with emotion. “Fortunately, you’re alright.”
Xi Yuechen smiled but didn’t reply further. His discomfort made him unwilling to continue engaging with these people.
Seeing Xi Yuechen so listless, Brother Long didn’t disturb him further and stood to leave.
“Cheng brother, you should rest well. Nothing is more important than your health. Big brother got hurt yesterday too and is recuperating at the villa. Don’t feel wronged.”
Before leaving, Brother Long still couldn’t help but remind him, also explaining why Bai Xiong hadn’t come to see Xi Yuechen.
“It’s fine. My injuries aren’t severe. How could I trouble Bai Ge?” Xi Yuechen said casually. But when he mentioned Bai Xiong, concern crept onto his face. “Is Bai Ge alright?”
“Big brother’s fine, don’t worry about that. He’ll come see you in a couple of days,” Brother Long said confidently, unable to hide the smile on his face.
“Oh, and before I go, I have to say—you were amazing yesterday. To rescue Big Brother from such danger… Now, you’re no longer an outsider in his heart. Wait and see, your luck is about to turn.”
Brother Long was satisfied. After yesterday, Big Brother would surely value Cheng Yue, maybe even let him stay by his side. Compared to before, when Cheng Yue had to struggle just to meet Big Brother, this was a leap forward.
Xi Yuechen, however, remained indifferent to Brother Long’s excitement, maintaining a stiff smile. All he wanted now was to be alone.
He knew what Brother Long was implying. He had planned this since yesterday, even risking a “self-inflicted hardship” as a strategy—all for a permanent solution.
Once Brother Long finally left happily, Xi Yuechen’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by his usual coldness.
The discomfort in his body was real. In the past, even more serious injuries wouldn’t faze him, but this time was different.
He felt agitated, suffocated. The faint pain from his wounds only intensified this irritation.
It’s said that people are most vulnerable when injured, lacking a sense of security. Whether Xi Yuechen felt weak now was unclear, but his mind was filled entirely with Su Ruo.
For the first time, Xi Yuechen felt the urge to rush to Su Ruo’s side, disregarding everything else. Only with his “little woman” could he find a sense of calm satisfaction.
Glancing at the time, it was already afternoon. Xi Yuechen hadn’t called Su Ruo since yesterday. He wondered if she had tried calling him, and if she had, would she be worried that no one answered?
Su Ruo only knew Xi Yuechen’s usual phone number. She had no idea about the number Cheng Yue used, so any call from her would go to his regular number.
Moreover, looking down at his hospital gown, Xi Yuechen knew yesterday’s clothes were now unusable. His ID and phone were missing too, likely taken by Yanmen people for safekeeping or investigation—he didn’t care.
Even if a regular government department investigated Cheng Yue, nothing improper would be found. Yanmen’s secret checks were even less worrisome.
As for the phone… that number was mostly for contacting Yanmen, occasionally showing an S City number, but nothing connected to Xi Yuechen himself. No matter how they searched, they wouldn’t find any trace.
Thus, Xi Yuechen remained completely indifferent about the missing phone and ID.
What did concern him was whether Su Ruo had called. If she had, and no one answered, would she worry?
Without any communication tools in hand, he planned to find a way to call her tonight.
Meanwhile, far away in B City, Su Ruo was sound asleep, unaware that Xi Yuechen hadn’t called yesterday. She assumed he was busy and didn’t bother to call, being very “considerate.”
Given Xi Yuechen’s habits, Su Ruo knew well enough that once he got busy, his phone would sit idle for days. For her, he was the typical career-first, family-second man.
She had long accepted this, understanding that her husband’s profession dictated it. With his ice-cold, insensitive nature, getting upset over it would be pointless.
So Su Ruo slept soundly, wide awake to nothing but dreams.
If Xi Yuechen knew this, would he feel relieved or more annoyed?
“Su Ruo! Get up!” Zhang Huaqing pushed the bedroom door open, noisily disturbing her. How could she still be sleeping at this hour? It was as if she were mistaking an afternoon nap for nighttime sleep.
“Mmm…” Su Ruo stirred, mumbling groggily, “Mom, just five more minutes, five minutes…”
She was utterly exhausted. Her mind was still in a haze, and with her growing belly, pregnancy reactions were minimal except for increasing appetite and drowsiness.
Zhang Huaqing sighed. Was she really that tired? When she had been pregnant with Su Ruo, it wasn’t this extreme.
Su Ruo had just returned from Zhengjia Courtyard yesterday and was to stay at the military district for a few days, as usual.
At home, Su Ruo had no reservations, behaving as she pleased, ignoring Zhang Huaqing’s scolding.
Seeing Su Ruo fall asleep again, Zhang Huaqing lost patience. She strode to the bed, lifted the quilt, and poked Su Ruo’s forehead, careful not to use too much force.
“Get up! Don’t say five minutes—five seconds isn’t acceptable either. If you keep sleeping like this, you’ll turn into a pig.”
Su Ruo, lightly jolted, began to wake, but her body resisted. Rolling over was a struggle with her large belly.
“Ah, so painful… why do women make things hard for other women?”
Finally awake, Su Ruo stared blankly, her eyes dull.
Zhang Huaqing rolled her eyes, snorted, and turned to leave, saying, “Get up within ten minutes and come downstairs.”
Struggling to sit, Su Ruo looked at her belly. Seven months along now, her big belly brought many changes to her life.
Look at her—eating so much, sleeping so much—her prime years all devoted to this belly.
Half annoyed, half amused, she grumbled at her belly, though her smile was sweet to the point of cloying.
“For being Xi Yuechen’s son, I won’t blame you,” Su Ruo hummed, not rushing out of bed. Her eyes lingered on her belly, gradually growing distant.
She wondered what her stubborn husband was busy with. She, bearing the hardships of raising their child, had no call from him.
“Son, remember to give your mom lots of kisses, alright? Let your dad be alone—good, just as he wants.”
Sensing Su Ruo’s thoughts, the baby moved twice in response, making her pause.
“You naughty boy!” she gently patted her belly, pretending to scold. “Mom was just joking—you listen casually. Your dad is your dad, no matter what. Don’t ever be rebellious!”
At this moment, Su Ruo completely forgot her own complaints, defending Xi Yuechen instead and chastising her son.
If the son didn’t show affection to Xi Yuechen, Su Ruo wouldn’t allow it. The commander already had a hard life; at least at home, there shouldn’t be any trouble.
Thus, in future prenatal training, poor little Xi would repeatedly have to listen to Su Ruo giving him “lessons on kissing his dad,” from morals to Xi Yuechen’s glorious deeds and life’s misfortunes, explaining that a father must be kissed. His dad wasn’t present due to very important matters, so the mother-and-son duo must be understanding.
