Su Ruo’s bad moods came quickly—and left just as fast. After chatting with Shen Liang, those negative feelings gradually disappeared.
Seeing Su Ruo looking listless, Shen Liang grew a little concerned and tried to cheer her up with light and pleasant topics.
“Ruo Ruo, staying cooped up at home all day must be so boring. How about we go out for a bit today?”
Shen Liang suggested. She could clearly tell Su Ruo wasn’t in the best mood—maybe going out would help?
“Huh?” Su Ruo hesitated. Lately, her laziness had grown worse and worse; she just wanted to stay at home and be bored in peace. But seeing Shen Liang’s expectant face and the concern in her eyes, she nodded. “Alright. It’s been a long time since I last went out anyway.”
Knowing that her mother-in-law cared about her, Su Ruo didn’t want to worry her. A walk outside would be nice—she was practically starting to feel moldy at home.
“Great! Go upstairs and change quickly, and make sure to dress warmly. Our Ruo Ruo is naturally beautiful, you’ll look good in anything.”
Shen Liang urged Su Ruo to change and reminded her not to skimp on warmth for the sake of fashion.
“Mom, you really aren’t modest. At this stage, no matter how I dress, it won’t look good. Comfort first, then everything else.”
Su Ruo laughed at Shen Liang’s boastful tone. With her huge belly, what good appearance could she possibly have? Too exaggerated. Besides, Xi Yuechen was far away—who was she dressing up for anyway? Comfort was the priority.
“Alright, alright. I say you look good, you look good. Who else in B City could match my Ruo Ruo’s beauty? Go change quickly, or we’ll be late.”
Shen Liang said this without any hint of hesitation. It was true—Ruo Ruo’s charm was well-known. Before she married in, countless people had coveted her. Even now, pregnant as she was, her allure hadn’t diminished; if anything, she radiated a unique maternal charm. Who in the capital could compare?
There’s a saying: Beauty is in the eyes of the lover, proven true through countless experiences. But even in the eyes of family, one sees beauty. Shen Liang thought Su Ruo was a rare beauty, and in her heart, Su Ruo had already reached the pinnacle—no one could rival her.
This was the effect of love: because you care, the other person’s good qualities are magnified a thousandfold. Even flaws can become a unique charm, appealing in every way. Praising someone in this way feels completely justified.
Su Ruo could only smile wryly at Shen Liang’s mindset. Luckily, this was said only in front of her—if anyone else heard, they’d probably laugh out loud. Who praises their family so unconditionally?
After carefully returning to her room, Su Ruo didn’t fully indulge in comfort but thoughtfully picked out her clothes.
Even though she was heavily pregnant and a little plump, she still needed to maintain some image. She was the Xi family daughter-in-law; she couldn’t go out looking sloppy. Besides, going out with her mother-in-law, she needed to be presentable, even if Shen Liang didn’t mind.
Shen Liang noticed Su Ruo’s coat over a sweater looked elegant but slightly thin. She frowned. “Aren’t you wearing too little? The sun’s out, but the wind is still sharp.”
“I’m fine! It’s warm—I’m wearing thermals underneath. It’s actually really hot,” Su Ruo said, fanning herself dramatically as if she were dying of heat.
Shen Liang gave her a helpless look and smiled, letting it be. They weren’t walking on a main road, so a little light dressing didn’t matter.
The streets were lively, and Su Ruo felt cheerful, smiling even through the traffic.
“Look at you, all cooped up at home and yet reluctant to go out,” Shen Liang teased, seeing Su Ruo staring out the window.
“Hehe, I’m lazy,” Su Ruo replied, turning to Shen Liang with a gleeful smile. “But seeing the bustling capital now, it feels good—full of life.”
Seeing Su Ruo so contemplative, Shen Liang gently tapped her forehead. “Only you could make laziness seem profound.”
“Of course,” Su Ruo winked playfully and turned back to look out the window.
Shen Liang wasn’t sure what exactly she was interested in but, seeing her happy, didn’t interrupt, signaling the driver to slow down.
Shen Liang hadn’t planned exactly where to go. A beauty salon? Su Ruo might not be interested. A crowded place? Could be dangerous. A quiet place? Too dull. She hesitated.
Su Ruo, losing interest in the passing scenery, turned to Shen Liang and noticed her troubled expression.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” she asked curiously.
“Ruo Ruo, is there anywhere you particularly want to go?”
Unable to think of a good place herself, Shen Liang tossed the question back to Su Ruo. Today was her day; she could choose.
Su Ruo froze. She had no idea where she wanted to go. “I… don’t know,” she answered instinctively.
Shen Liang was momentarily speechless. She had excitedly brought Su Ruo out, but now had no idea where to go. Were they just going to drive aimlessly?
Su Ruo laughed at Shen Liang’s expression. “Anywhere’s fine. We’re just out for fun.”
“Alright, that works,” Shen Liang said after thinking for a moment. “Let’s go to the shopping street, see if there’s anything we can buy.”
Su Ruo agreed. They weren’t really looking for anything; perhaps something for the unborn baby. Her room was already filled with baby items, but at least it would pass the time.
Seeing the street wasn’t too crowded, Shen Liang let Su Ruo get out, extremely cautious.
Su Ruo smiled wryly, getting out slowly.
Walking down the street, she seemed lively, observing the neat shopfronts and chatting happily with Shen Liang.
At one store, she looked up—a flagship store of a well-known watch brand. Su Ruo recognized it: a top-tier brand, prestigious, exquisitely made, and expensive—an established luxury item.
Her curiosity sparked, she grabbed Shen Liang’s hand. “Mom, let’s go in and take a look.”
Shen Liang looked up, saw it was a watch store, and assumed Su Ruo wanted to browse for herself. She nodded and followed Su Ruo inside.
A salesperson immediately greeted them warmly. At a flagship store of this caliber, staff were highly professional and perceptive.
Seeing the two women, clearly of high status, the salesperson’s attitude became even more polite.
“May I ask what style you are looking for?”
Not asking who would buy it, to avoid offending anyone, the salesperson asked tactfully.
“Ruo Ruo, which style do you want?” Shen Liang asked naturally.
“I don’t need it,” Su Ruo said slyly, smiling at the salesperson. “Please show me something suitable for my mom.”
“For me?” Shen Liang was surprised. “Why don’t you buy one for yourself? I already have one.”
Although touched, Shen Liang knew this brand’s watches cost tens of thousands. At her age, why wear such high-end luxury items?
“Oh, Mom, I just want to buy one for you today. I can afford it. You often wear just one watch, rotating it, right?”
Su Ruo lightly shook Shen Liang’s arm, pouting a little. Her annual income was decent; instead of letting it sit idle, why not spend it on loved ones?
Shen Liang couldn’t resist. Su Ruo excitedly tried on watch after watch without impatience.
Seeing her happy, Shen Liang no longer refused; rare moments like this brought him joy.
Soon, they selected a watch for Shen Liang, and Su Ruo swiped her card. Shen Liang accepted it without protest.
The salesperson, noticing Su Ruo’s generosity and gold card, assumed she was wealthy. Smiling, she said, “You look very happy, Miss. You’re so beautiful; your husband must be quite distinguished as well.”
Su Ruo, graciously smiling, replied, “Oh, you flatter me.”
Seeing her in a good mood, the salesperson continued, “We’ve just received a batch of couple watches, quite popular. Would you like to see them?”
Couple watches? Su Ruo’s interest was piqued.
If she and the Colonel wore matching watches, that would look quite nice…
