RMM – Chapter 14 A Couple Buys Furniture Together

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 10 min read 14 of 365 69

This was definitely the first time in days that Su Ruo was fully awake while sharing a bed with Xi Yuechen.

Lying with her back to him, Su Ruo’s eyes were wide open—she didn’t feel even the slightest drowsiness, let alone any hint of sleep. They had returned late from the military compound, and after taking a shower, she had gone to bed as usual. Unexpectedly, Xi Yuechen also lay down right after her, breaking his usual habit of waiting in the study until she was already asleep before coming to bed.

The faint scent of his shampoo drifted toward her, making Su Ruo feel extremely restless. She had already gotten used to sleeping alone, okay? Every time she started thinking Xi Yuechen wasn’t too bad, he would do something that made him significantly less cute.

Just as she was trying to lull herself to sleep, she suddenly remembered what Zhang Huaqing had mentioned to her today—about sharing a bed.

That thought struck her like a bolt of lightning, instantly wiping out the little drowsiness she had managed to gather. Her face grew warm as she lay there, stiff as a board, not daring to move for fear that the person beside her would notice her thoughts—just like a guilty thief.

After being tormented by this thought for a long time, Su Ruo finally drifted off. As always, the moment she fell asleep, she rolled right into Xi Yuechen’s embrace.

Originally resting with his eyes closed, Xi Yuechen opened them slightly, the corners of his lips lifting into a faint smile. He reached out and wrapped his arms around the little woman in his embrace, then fell asleep, satisfied.

Poor Su Ruo had gotten used to being treated as a body pillow these past few days. The moment she fell asleep, she rolled into his arms so naturally that her movements were seamless—unknowingly benefiting the man beside her.

The next morning, as expected, Su Ruo woke up to find herself alone in bed. It was no surprise—Xi Yuechen always woke up earlier than her.

Sitting on the bed, Su Ruo reflected on herself. I really don’t act like a proper wife at all. Which wife lets her husband get up early every day to prepare breakfast? I really need to change. If my mother-in-law finds out about this, she’ll definitely skin me alive.

Sure enough, after washing up, Su Ruo stepped out of the bedroom and was immediately greeted by a familiar, faint scent. Xi Yuechen had just finished setting the breakfast table when he saw her walk out. The corners of his mouth lifted slightly.

She always woke up at just the right time—right after he had finished preparing breakfast, walking out of the bedroom with a guilty expression.

“Commander, you’ve really gone through a lot of trouble making breakfast these past few days.”

Seated at the table, Su Ruo thanked him with a serious tone. Xi Yuechen raised an eyebrow slightly—why did it sound like she was thanking a stranger for helping her out?

“I just brought it back after my morning training.” His calm voice carried little emotion.

Su Ruo thought to herself, Yeah, yeah, I know that. I was just being polite because I felt guilty, okay?

Actually, Su Ruo wasn’t completely idle every day. At the very least, she took care of the household cleaning every morning. She always cleaned thoroughly, and most mornings passed just like that.

After breakfast, just as she was about to start cleaning, Xi Yuechen stopped her, reminding her to take her medicine. She stuck out her tongue in embarrassment—she had completely forgotten about that.

Honestly, Su Ruo felt that she was fine. Although the fall had hurt like hell at the time, wasn’t that normal? Only someone without pain receptors wouldn’t feel anything. Falling and bumping your head was just an ordinary accident. As long as there was no serious injury, it wasn’t a big deal. Why was everyone making such a fuss over it?

But since Xi Yuechen had reminded her, she obediently took the medicine. There was no point in arguing about it again.

While cleaning the house, she glanced at the empty living room and naturally remembered her “renovation plan.” The chaos from the other day had made her completely forget about it, but now that she had remembered, she couldn’t sit still anymore. The thought gnawed at her mind, making her itch to take action.

After that fall, sneaking out again was definitely out of the question. Besides, since she was buying things for the house, Xi Yuechen had every right to know. It would be better to inform him beforehand.

The only problem was—letting him know wasn’t the issue—she was just afraid he wouldn’t let her go. Given how overbearing he had been the other day, forcing her to lie in bed and “rest,” it was highly likely that he’d stop her from going out today.

Thinking of this, Su Ruo glanced at the clock—10:30 AM. She rolled her eyes and came up with an idea.

Grabbing her keys and wallet, she slipped out without informing Xi Yuechen, who was in the study. She remembered that there was a small supermarket downstairs that sold fresh produce.

The money and bank cards in her wallet were given to her by Zhang Huaqing, who had said they belonged to her. Su Ruo didn’t hesitate to take them—if they belonged to Su Ruo, then they belonged to her, no question about it. It would be weird not to accept them.

Aside from the cash, she had no idea what the PINs were for the cards. She had asked Zhang Huaqing, Su Heng, and He Wen, but none of them knew either. She had planned to change the PINs in a few days, but with everything that had happened, she hadn’t gotten around to it yet. Since she hadn’t needed to use the money, she had put it off for now.

After carefully selecting a fish, some pork ribs, and a bunch of other groceries, she finally returned home, satisfied.

Su Ruo’s so-called “brilliant” plan was actually quite shameless. As the saying goes, when you take someone’s things, you owe them; when you eat their food, you feel guilty.

Her strategy was simple—she would take the initiative to cook lunch and make a few of her best dishes. Hopefully, by the time Xi Yuechen saw the effort she put into cooking, he wouldn’t have the heart to refuse her request.

But honestly, Su Ruo was being a little overconfident. Cooking was her responsibility to begin with. No matter how delicious the food was, did she really think a man like Xi Yuechen would be swayed by such a simple trick? If he wanted to refuse, he’d just refuse.

Xi Yuechen put down his book and stretched his neck. He glanced at the clock—past noon already. Why is she taking so long?

He got up, opened the door, and walked out.

Our dear Colonel Xi actually remembered that he was supposed to cook.

The moment he opened the door, he was greeted by the sounds coming from the kitchen and the rich aroma of food filling the air.

He paused slightly before heading straight to the kitchen.

As expected, he found the little woman busily moving about inside.

Watching Su Ruo, dressed in an apron and cooking skillfully, he could tell she had a solid foundation.

He didn’t bother questioning how a so-called “princess” like her could be so adept at cooking such an impressive variety of dishes—he simply assumed it was a hobby of hers.

Leaning against the door, Xi Yuechen looked at the freshly steamed fish and braised pork ribs that had just been served. The presentation was good, the aroma was tempting, and the taste shouldn’t be too far off.

Wearing casual home clothes and tying her hair up in a high ponytail, she revealed a smooth, full forehead. Humming a little tune with the corners of her lips slightly raised, she seemed to be in a great mood. Watching his little wife cook for him, Xi Yuechen also curved his lips slightly. His heart was filled with an unfamiliar warmth, making everything in the kitchen appear particularly pleasing to the eye.

“Ah—”

As Su Ruo turned to fetch some water, she suddenly noticed the figure standing at the doorway and let out a startled scream. Upon realizing it was Xi Yuechen, she pouted and complained, “Commander, why are you standing there so quietly? You almost scared me to death!”

Xi Yuechen watched as Su Ruo shot him a glare and grumbled in a slightly annoyed tone. That expression, that voice—it struck straight into his heart, making it itch slightly.

“Commander, you should go wait in the dining room for a bit. I get nervous with you standing here,” Su Ruo said without even looking up, issuing an unceremonious order to leave.

Raising an eyebrow slightly, Xi Yuechen didn’t say much. He simply obeyed and walked out.

Su Ruo worked quickly, bringing out all the dishes in less than half an hour. The white jade dining table was adorned with four dishes and two soups, making for a delightful spread.

Watching the well-organized Su Ruo, Xi Yuechen couldn’t help but be curious—this little woman was being unusually enthusiastic. Was she trying to… please him? She probably had a favor to ask. However, Xi Yuechen was very patient and had no intention of rushing her.

“Commander, eat more! These past few days, I’ve troubled you so much with my mess. Now that I’m better, I should properly thank you.”

As soon as Su Ruo sat down, she eagerly urged Xi Yuechen to eat, smiling radiantly.

Xi Yuechen glanced at her overly bright smile but said nothing. He simply picked up his chopsticks and started eating.

“Tastes good, right? This is my specialty!” Su Ruo didn’t eat right away. Instead, she watched Xi Yuechen expectantly after he took his first bite.

“Mm, not bad.” Xi Yuechen casually uttered three words.

But Su Ruo knew that these three words were actually the highest praise coming from him. Her eyes curved into a crescent, and she couldn’t hide the pride and satisfaction on her face.

The slight upward curve of Xi Yuechen’s lips hinted at his good mood, though Su Ruo didn’t notice.

Watching Xi Yuechen, who had automatically taken it upon himself to wash the dishes in the kitchen, Su Ruo furrowed her brows in distress. How should she bring it up later? He should agree, right? After all, it wasn’t anything bad. He had no reason to refuse.

When Xi Yuechen came out of the kitchen and saw her troubled expression, he immediately knew he had guessed right—she definitely had something to ask him. Leisurely, he sat down on the sofa, pretending not to notice her dilemma. He casually turned on the TV and switched to the military channel.

“Commander, I have something to discuss with you.”

“Hmm?” Xi Yuechen turned to look at Su Ruo.

“I… I think the house looks a bit plain, so I want to buy some flowers, rugs, and such. What do you think?”

Hearing this, Xi Yuechen raised his brows slightly—was that all?

“Mm, do as you like,” he replied indifferently, clearly unconcerned about such matters.

Watching him continue to watch TV, Su Ruo screamed internally. That’s not the main point!

“As long as you agree! Then I’ll go shopping with He Wen this afternoon, okay?”

“With He Wen?” Xi Yuechen frowned slightly.

“Yeah, I still have amnesia, right? I need a guide to help me out. But don’t worry! I’ll be extra careful this time and won’t fall again.”

Afraid that Xi Yuechen wouldn’t believe her, Su Ruo was just short of raising her hand to swear an oath.

However, even after hearing her reassurance, Xi Yuechen’s frown didn’t ease. Why He Wen? Glancing at Su Ruo, who was watching him intently, he slowly said, “No need to call her. We’ll go together later.”

Su Ruo clearly hadn’t expected this outcome. She blinked blankly before reacting.

“But… don’t you need to read? I don’t want to delay you.” She was obviously trying to change his mind.

Yet, seeing how unwilling she was, Xi Yuechen felt a little annoyed. Looking at her seriously, he said, “It won’t. We’ll leave later.”

Seeing Xi Yuechen’s firm stance, Su Ruo knew there was no room for negotiation. Fine, they would go together then. As long as she could get what she needed, it didn’t matter. If he wasn’t bothered, why should she be?

And so, before long, the little couple headed out to “shop for furniture” together. From a distance, anyone looking at their side-by-side figures would surely remark—”What a perfect pair.”
