RMM – Chapter 113 First Awakening of Love

Rebirth: A Military Marriage 9 min read 115 of 365 25

When Xi Yuechen returned to Beijing, he didn’t tell Xi Yuehui and the others his exact arrival time. It wasn’t as if he couldn’t find his way—why bother having someone pick him up?

As he came off the plane, Xi Yuechen walked briskly toward the airport exit. Unexpectedly—bang!—someone bumped into him, and the other person’s belongings scattered across the floor.

“Sorry, sorry, I was walking too fast and wasn’t watching. I’m really sorry.”

Xi Yuechen had to stop. His face remained expressionless, though his eyes betrayed his displeasure. In such a huge airport, could this person really not watch where they were going?

A soft, apologetic female voice rang out beside him. Xi Yuechen gave the young woman a cold glance, then quickly looked away. He responded with a curt “mm,” before striding off.

The woman was left staring in disbelief. This man was far too cold and arrogant! Sure, it was her fault for bumping into him, but wasn’t he, as a gentleman, supposed to help pick up her things? At the very least, couldn’t he have said, It’s fine?

Her surprise soon turned into thoughtfulness as she watched his tall figure walking away. Aside from his bad temper, he really was something—so outstanding, in fact, that she had never seen anyone quite like him. Especially that aura of sharpness and discipline—how could she not tell that he was a soldier?

She pressed down on her racing heartbeat, quickly gathered her things, and hurried off.

Su Ruo woke up very early that morning, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Today, the commander was coming home.

Unable to suppress the joy on her face, she climbed out of bed. Since she couldn’t sleep, she might as well take a walk—the morning air was fresh anyway.

When she went downstairs, Xi Yuehui was in casual sportswear, ready to head out for a morning run.

“Well, sister-in-law, you’re up already? What are you doing up so early?” he asked while putting on his shoes. A moment later, his face broke into a teasing grin, as though he had just figured it out. “Ah, I see—you couldn’t sleep because you’re too excited, right?”

Seeing the mischievous smile on his face, Su Ruo immediately understood his implication: she was too excited about the commander’s return. She had no desire to humor him, so she snorted lightly and turned her head to look around.

“Hm, where is everyone else?” Not a soul was in sight.

“Grandpa went out to walk the birds, Dad went to work early, and Mom went to buy groceries herself,” Xi Yuehui explained, standing up after tying his shoes.

“This early?” Su Ruo was surprised. It was only a little past 6:30—why was everyone so busy?

“Grandpa always wakes up early. Dad had work to handle at the ministry. And Mom wanted the freshest vegetables, so she went early.”

With that, Xi Yuehui moved to open the door. Su Ruo quickly stopped him: “Hey, where are you going?”

“Morning training,” he said, stepping halfway out before leaning back in to ask, “What, you want to come too?”

“No, you go ahead. I’ll just walk around later.”

“Alright, but be careful when you head out, don’t go too far,” he reminded her before leaving.

Black lines almost appeared on Su Ruo’s forehead. Since when did she need this brat to lecture her? Did she really seem that unreliable?

Grumbling to herself, she glanced outside. The autumn morning still carried a chill—she would need an extra layer if she went out.

She went back to her room, put on another top, slipped into the flat shoes Shen Liang had prepared for her, and headed out.

Walking along a path strewn with fallen leaves, Su Ruo couldn’t help but sigh. No wonder this was the residence of high-ranking leaders—the environment at Zhengjia Court was truly remarkable. Shady trees, interlaced rockeries, winding garden paths—even in autumn, the scenery was charming in its own way.

Just by looking around, she could tell how vast the compound was. Tsk tsk. To occupy so much land in the capital—what luxury and privilege!

No wonder everyone wanted to be in power. Just this alone was enough to tempt people.

Su Ruo let out a soft sigh and took a deep breath. The cool air filled her lungs, making her feel refreshed and clear-headed.

She stepped on the fallen leaves, enjoying the leisurely walk. Suddenly, she remembered the times she had joined Xi Yuechen for morning exercises. She couldn’t help but chuckle.

Back then, those stretches had nearly split her legs in half! Now that she thought about it, no wonder people looked at them strangely when they went out to buy breakfast afterward. To outsiders, their “morning exercise” must have meant something very different!

She laughed again at the memory. What had felt like suffering then now seemed almost nostalgic.

Just as she was lost in thought, a voice suddenly came from behind her: “Well, well, look who it is.”

She turned around. It was Feng Weijia, wearing a roguish grin.

Oh right—he lived here too. She had almost forgotten since they’d never run into each other before.

“Then open your eyes and take a good look,” she retorted.

“Haha, don’t be mad, Miss Su. I didn’t recognize greatness when I saw it.” Feng Weijia laughed heartily, clearly in a good mood.

He hadn’t expected to run into Su Ruo here. She had been keeping to herself all this time—actually, she hadn’t stepped out at all, which explained why they hadn’t crossed paths.

“Hmph,” Su Ruo chuckled, raising an eyebrow. “I didn’t think you were capable of waking up this early.”

“What are you saying?” Feng Weijia shot her a look, sounding offended. “I’m very disciplined, you know.”

Su Ruo smiled faintly, stretching her arms as she casually asked, “By the way, you’re working under Bo’an, right?”

At the mention of Liang Bo’an, Feng Weijia instantly became serious. “Yes, we’re very dedicated every day.”

Su Ruo burst out laughing. “Who asked you that? I mean, I haven’t seen Bo’an in a while. How is he?”

Feng Weijia secretly sighed. Not well, of course—but how could he say that? He forced a smile. “He’s the same as always.”

Su Ruo didn’t think much of it and said casually, “Mm, once I’m feeling better, I’ll call everyone out for a get-together.”

Feng Weijia’s mind whirled. He wasn’t sure if it was good or bad for Bo’an to meet Su Ruo now. Messy, messy. Still, he kept his expression calm and replied with a smile, “Sounds good. By the way, how’s your health now?”

Hearing the genuine concern, Su Ruo smiled and shrugged. “Look at me, I’m fine. It’s just early pregnancy—I need to be careful, that’s all.”

Feng Weijia nodded. “I can tell. You’ve already put on some weight. What are you eating every day?”

The tone was so obviously disdainful that Su Ruo almost choked with anger. She shot him a glare. “I’m eating for my child! And this is called looking blessed, alright?”

“Yes, yes, not my business,” Feng Weijia chuckled at her indignation. “But honestly, if we’re talking about looking blessed, you’ve still got a long way to go. You’ll need to work harder.”

“Are you encouraging me or insulting me?” Su Ruo glared but also laughed. “Even if I do have blessings, I’m not sharing them with you.”

“Hah, I wouldn’t dare take them even if you gave them to me—it’d shorten my life!”

After a laugh, Feng Weijia hesitated, then asked, “Ruo Ruo, can I ask you something?”

“What is it?” she asked, turning her head while they walked.

“Well…” He coughed awkwardly before continuing. “Has He Wen come to see you recently?”

“He Wen? Yes, she came yesterday. Why do you ask?” Su Ruo looked at him curiously.

“Oh, nothing. Just haven’t seen her in a while, so I was wondering.”

“If it’s been a while, then reach out. It’s not like she’s trapped at home like me.” Su Ruo kicked at the fallen leaves, speaking absentmindedly.

“She’d have to actually come out first…” Feng Weijia muttered, his tone a mix of complaint and dejection.

That caught Su Ruo’s curiosity. She stopped walking and studied him carefully.

Feeling uneasy under her gaze, Feng Weijia blinked and forced a laugh. “What are you staring at? I’ll tell you now—even if you think I’m handsome, I won’t agree to anything.”

“Pfft, dream on,” Su Ruo snorted, then gave him a sly grin. “Tell me honestly—why are you so interested in He Wen? Why so concerned, hmm?”

At first, she hadn’t thought much of it. But seeing his unnatural expression, her instincts screamed there was something here. A flash of insight struck—she suddenly guessed the truth.

“I’m not overly concerned. Just… worried about a friend,” Feng Weijia said, laughing weakly.

“Yeah right. You’ve already exposed yourself.” Su Ruo leaned closer, smirking. “Come on, spill it.”

Seeing her so confident, Feng Weijia sighed. Fine, better to just admit it. If he had Su Ruo’s support, it might even be a huge help.

“I like He Wen, alright?” he confessed, giving her a sideways look. “Happy now?”

“Oh my, tsk tsk. Who would’ve thought! Young Master Feng, having his first stirrings of love—toward He Wen, no less. Incredible!” Su Ruo teased mercilessly.

It really was unexpected. Who would’ve imagined that Feng Weijia liked He Wen?

“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean? Why can’t I like her?” Feng Weijia asked, flustered.

“Of course you can. It’s not against the law,” Su Ruo grinned wider. “The real question is—does she like you? She probably doesn’t even know, does she?”

That one line crushed Feng Weijia’s spirits. He slumped his shoulders with a sigh. “If she did like me, would I still be here moping?”

“Tsk, look at you—you’re just like a lovesick middle schooler, sighing and frowning.”

Su Ruo acted as though she had discovered breaking news, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Life had been too dull—this fresh gossip was delightful.

“Why are you enjoying my misery?” Feng Weijia protested, looking indignant. “Shouldn’t you be supporting me, creating opportunities for me?”

“You’ve got it backward. If He Wen told me she liked you, then I’d really help out. But since it’s you who likes her… sorry, can’t help.”

She shrugged helplessly and continued walking.

“Hey, we all grew up together in the same compound. Do you really have to be so heartless?”

Feng Weijia’s dramatic wails trailed behind her. Su Ruo, in a very good mood, only smiled and kept walking.
