When Su Ruo and He Wen were approaching Zhengjia Courtyard, Shen Liang called.
“Hello, Mom.”
“Ruoruo, are you having fun?” Shen Liang’s voice carried a gentle smile.
Su Ruo couldn’t help but laugh. If she wanted her to come home, she could just say it directly—why go about it so roundaboutly?
“Yes, it’s been great. I’m on my way home now.”
“Already heading back? Why didn’t you call ahead so Yuehui could come pick you up?” Shen Liang chided lightly, though inwardly she felt relieved. It was worrying for her to still be out this late.
“It’s fine,” Su Ruo said, glancing at He Wen, who was smirking, “He Wen is taking me home, so don’t worry. I’ll be home soon.”
Shen Liang hung up and looked at the people sitting in the living room. “She’ll be home soon. He Wen is bringing her back.”
“That’s good, that’s good. I haven’t seen Ruo all day,” the old man said, smiling contentedly, though the tone at the end sounded slightly like a complaint.
“All right, Grandpa, Sister-in-law will be back soon, let her spend time with you tomorrow,” Xi Yuehui said with a helpless smile.
“Okay, you all go back to your rooms. It wouldn’t be good for Ruoruo to see so many people waiting for her,” Shen Liang added. She knew if Ruoruo came back to find everyone anxiously waiting, she might feel uncomfortable, as if everyone didn’t trust her.
Xi Jian’an and Xi Yuehui nodded and headed upstairs, leaving only the old man sitting on the sofa.
“Dad, aren’t you going to sleep?” Shen Liang asked with a smile. Ah, this old man is becoming more and more attached to Ruoruo. Hopefully, this time she’ll stay and let him enjoy his old age peacefully.
“Look at the time. How could I sleep now? I’m waiting for Ruoruo,” the old man said, pouting like a child and turning his head.
Shen Liang could only sigh and smile. Well, let him wait. If he doesn’t see Ruoruo tonight, he definitely won’t feel comfortable.
By the time Su Ruo got home, it was almost nine o’clock. The place wasn’t that close, and heavy traffic on the way had delayed them.
Just after getting out of the car, a gust of wind made Su Ruo shiver involuntarily. She felt cold and wondered, could she really be catching a cold…?
Su Ruo’s heart skipped a beat at the thought, feeling uncertain.
He Wen noticed Su Ruo’s unease and gently asked, “What’s wrong? You don’t seem quite right.”
“Nothing, just a bit cold. I’ll feel better once I get inside,” Su Ruo replied casually, rubbing her arms.
“Really? Then let’s go in quickly. It wouldn’t be good if you caught a chill,” He Wen said anxiously, taking her hand and heading toward the house.
“It’s fine, don’t worry,” Su Ruo said, trying to reassure him, though she herself felt uncertain and guessed she might actually catch a cold.
“Don’t take it lightly. Your body isn’t like before, your immunity must be weaker. It’s my fault for being careless. You probably got chilled at Lao Qi’s place,” He Wen said, feeling guilty.
By then, they had reached the door. Su Ruo stopped and said seriously, “That’s not true. Don’t overthink it. Could you really have prevented this? If you keep like this, I’ll really get mad, and I won’t ask you out again.”
He Wen felt a bit relieved at her words, easing the guilt on his face.
“Yeah, stop standing here. Let’s go inside,” He Wen said, pushing the door open. Instantly, the warmth from inside enveloped them.
“You’re back? Come in quickly,” Shen Liang called out upon seeing them.
“Yes, Mom,” Su Ruo said with a smile as she entered, and seeing her grandfather sitting on the sofa made her smile even wider. “Grandpa, why aren’t you asleep yet?”
He Wen glanced at Shen Liang before looking at the old man, feeling slightly nervous. “Grandpa Xi.”
The old man nodded and smiled. “You went out with Ruoruo? Did you have fun?”
He Wen, feeling both honored and a bit overwhelmed, quickly smiled. “Yes, we had a great time.”
Wow… so Grandpa Xi is actually this gentle and amiable in private? Where did the once stern, cold, and unyielding Grandpa Xi go?
When she was young, the old man had been strict and unyielding with all other children except Su’s siblings. Many were intimidated and dared not approach him. But now, seeing him like this was bewildering.
He Wen hid her thoughts and surprise with a deeper smile, as if concealing something.
“Grandpa Xi, Aunt Shen, please stay seated. I should be going now,” He Wen said at the door.
“Leaving so soon? Stay a bit longer,” Shen Liang laughed, trying to persuade her.
“No, Aunt, I got home late and my mom will scold me,” He Wen declined politely. She couldn’t be bold or relaxed here; the Xi family was an intimidating presence.
“Mom, let her go first. It’s late and not safe otherwise,” Su Ruo interjected.
Shen Liang didn’t insist further, telling her to come often and spend more time with Ruoruo.
He Wen quickly agreed, thinking to herself, “No need to take these polite words seriously. I’m not your family; I can’t just be calm and at ease here.”
After sending He Wen off, Shen Liang turned to take Su Ruo’s hand and guide her toward the sofa.
“Ruoruo, your hands are so cold. Did you catch a chill?” Shen Liang asked, shocked when she touched Su Ruo’s hands—there was no warmth at all.
“Ah, maybe the wind tonight made them cold,” Su Ruo said with a wry laugh.
“Caught by the wind? Your face is so pale,” Shen Liang frowned, pulling her toward the sofa. “You should have worn more. It’s my fault.”
“Mom, it’s just a little cold, nothing serious,” Su Ruo said, smiling reassuringly. Then she looked at her grandfather. “Grandpa, it’s so late and you’re still awake.”
The old man looked her over carefully. “Don’t worry about me. Go take a hot shower and then sleep.”
Shen Liang nodded in agreement, urging Su Ruo to head to her room. Su Ruo didn’t refuse and softly acknowledged.
“Grandpa, Mom, I’ll go upstairs first. Don’t stay up too late,” she said.
Once upstairs, Shen Liang turned to the old man. “Dad, see, Ruoruo is back. You should sleep too.”
“Mm, also check on Yuehui. Don’t stay too late. Some things you can never fully learn from books,” he said, getting up and heading to his room.
She’s twenty-four now. It’s time to explore on her own.
Shen Liang sighed internally. If only she would listen to me… Ah, children grow up and have their own opinions. Some things parents shouldn’t interfere with too much.
Su Ruo hadn’t even taken off her clothes yet when she sneezed twice in a row.
She really might be catching a cold. Her body was so weak.
Considering everything—being startled and chilled just now—it was no surprise she might get sick.
She quickly took a hot shower, drank some plain water, wrapped herself in a blanket, and sipped it slowly while sitting cross-legged on the bed.
With a baby in her belly, still in the early stages of pregnancy, Su Ruo couldn’t take risks. She avoided medicine and only drank water to flush out toxins, hoping she would feel better by tomorrow.
She touched her belly and whispered, frowning, “Baby, it’s all mommy’s fault. I didn’t take care of myself, and now you must feel uncomfortable too. Be good, tomorrow it’ll be better.”
She sighed, feeling very guilty. If it weren’t for Miss Zhou today, who knows what might have happened.
She didn’t dare tell her family. No harm came to her, so telling them would only worry them unnecessarily.
“Baby, Mommy will never make this mistake again. I’ll take care of you and protect you until you arrive in this world. When will Daddy come to see you?”
Su Ruo drank a lot of water and went to the bathroom many times before finally falling asleep.
Shen Liang had limited her phone use to protect the baby. At this stage, everything that could have an effect was strictly controlled.
So these days, Su Ruo and Xi Yuehui barely contacted each other, only one or two short calls during the day.
Su Ruo understood it was for the baby’s sake, but sometimes it still made her restless and strangely emotional.
Xi Yuehui had just finished night training. Walking in the deep night, he heard the clear chirping of insects. There was no moon, but the stars were bright, shining brilliantly—a view impossible to see in B City.
The little woman has probably never seen so many stars. If she did, she would surely like them.
Xi Yuehui withdrew his gaze from the sky and let out a silent sigh, a faint sense of melancholy rising in his heart.
These past days, his longing for Su Ruo had deepened, especially knowing she was pregnant. He wondered how she was now, whether she was in discomfort.
Today, even the formidable Xi Chief was finally tasting the feeling of longing.
The day after tomorrow, he should be able to return—if nothing unexpected happens.
These days, Xi Yuehui had been at the training ground almost all day. Apart from training, he analyzed detailed information about each team member to fully understand them and plan detailed training strategies.
Every step and detail was meticulously considered.
At times, there was a selfish motivation—if he could complete the tasks early, he could apply for a transfer. Not necessarily to leave B Military District, but even moving somewhere closer would allow him to return and see her occasionally.
Breathing in the fresh night air, he laughed at himself for falling for such sentimental feelings—a side he never expected but felt full in his heart.
This little woman had given him things he never even dreamed of before, including, at this moment… this feeling of longing.
