“Brother Long, can we make the purchase today?”
Xi Yuechen asked, slightly excited, unable to hide the eagerness on his face.
“Yes. Do you have everything ready?” Long Ge replied, without a hint of politeness. There was no doubt—the “everything” here meant money.
Long Ge appeared indifferent, but inwardly he thought he could see that Cheng Yue was a promising person. He was just too young—getting so visibly excited over such a small matter. He still needed more experience.
At the same time, this reassured him a bit. Honest people were easier to handle; give them a little honey and they’d be grateful. Too clever and cunning, and they wouldn’t listen.
“Everything’s ready. It’s at the hotel!” Xi Yuechen clasped his hands together, rubbing them slightly, looking visibly thrilled.
“Oh, you’ve prepared well. Not worried the deal might fall through?” Long Ge raised an eyebrow and asked with a smile.
“Hehe, I came here wholeheartedly for you. Even if the deal fails, our friendship remains. Consider it meeting a friend, as long as you value me,” Xi Yuechen said sincerely, smiling shyly. “This is my first time making such a deal. I’m excited, so I prepared everything I could.”
Long Ge laughed heartily, patting Xi Yuechen’s shoulder. “Brother Cheng, I know you’re honest, but in this business, honesty alone won’t suffice. You never know when someone might take advantage of you.”
“I’ll work on that. Thank you for the guidance, Brother Long,” Xi Yuechen said gratefully. “Before coming here, I did some research. Mainland China enforces strict regulations on this kind of business. Conditions are less favorable there than here, but that also means the profit is higher. They say wealth is found in risk.”
“Ha! ‘Wealth is found in risk’—that’s the spirit! Doing this business takes courage. Keep it up. You’ll go far,” Long Ge said happily. If Cheng Yue succeeded, future long-term trades would always go through him. That would be great—more money in his hands, and his position would be even more secure.
Moreover, if Cheng Yue prospered later, Long Ge would have earned his gratitude. Not expecting repayment, but it would still provide useful connections on the mainland, making things easier in the future.
“Thank you for your recognition, Brother Long. I’ll repay you when I get the chance,” Xi Yuechen said sincerely.
“Alright, enough talk. Go back and get the money, then come here. You’ve been here too long already. Don’t let business elsewhere suffer,” Long Ge said, sipping from his wine glass, no longer looking at Xi Yuechen.
Xi Yuechen had wondered whether the deal would take place in the Imperial City. Observing over this period, it was clear that the Imperial City was Yanmen’s stronghold; most of their matters were conducted there.
He hadn’t expected Yanmen to be so brazen. They didn’t hide anything, even holding deals here. Clearly, Yanmen must have some connections in the government and police.
A cold smile crossed his face. This wasn’t just about cracking down on drug trafficking. It was easy to imagine how many people would fall when Yanmen’s plans failed.
It seemed this time there would be a major purge.
Xi Yuechen didn’t probe further. What did this have to do with him? His only job was to complete his mission; other matters were beyond his authority and concern.
Besides, his father likely didn’t know about this. It wasn’t his responsibility. This operation involved both military and government sectors, so proceeding independently made sense. Otherwise, it would have been all talk and no results.
After grabbing his suitcase from the hotel, he hurried back. To be honest, he felt an eager anticipation. After this operation, he was supposed to return to S City. He planned to take a few days’ leave to visit Beijing.
The deal went smoothly. Long Ge openly brought the “goods” into a private room in the Imperial City, with few guards visible. Xi Yuechen knew the real security was hidden; any sudden move on his part would have been quickly suppressed.
Xi Yuechen had no intention of alerting anyone. He needed time to maneuver with Yanmen. His strategy was to play the long game.
Meeting Yanmen’s upper echelon was rare. So far, the most influential person Xi Yuechen had interacted with was Long Ge. He knew that one small transaction wasn’t enough to truly gain Yanmen’s trust. Yanmen would never hand over a huge quantity to someone unfamiliar. This was going to be a prolonged effort.
“Brother Cheng, don’t mind. Even our small trades happen here for convenience. But rest assured, this is our territory—completely safe.”
Xi Yuechen inwardly sneered. “So the Imperial City is controlled by Yanmen?”
Seeing Xi Yuechen’s curious admiration, Long Ge grinned. “Not exactly ours, but close. We have a mutually beneficial arrangement with the owner: he gets the money, we get the venue.”
“So we’re openly trading here. Nothing will happen?” Xi Yuechen’s curiosity grew.
“What could happen? Everything’s been arranged. Every month, we pay our respects—it’s not wasted,” Long Ge said with a scoff.
“No wonder Yanmen is so powerful—courageous and wise. I’m impressed,” Xi Yuechen said, stopping there to avoid asking too much.
Long Ge laughed arrogantly. “Of course. Yanmen aims to establish itself across the East. Every step is calculated. Otherwise, how could we survive? A mere D Province… hm.”
Realizing he’d said too much, he fell silent, sipping his wine.
Ambitious indeed, Xi Yuechen thought coldly.
“Yes, Yanmen is no small fry. With this strength and courage, success is inevitable. I congratulate you in advance,” Xi Yuechen said sincerely.
Long Ge, reassured by Xi Yuechen’s sincerity, smiled. “Thanks for the kind words. Yanmen values loyalty. As long as no one causes trouble, we are fair and amicable.”
“Naturally,” Xi Yuechen nodded, lightly smiling, raising his cup.
Having obtained the goods, Xi Yuechen prepared to return to S City, explaining and bidding farewell to Long Ge before leaving.
“Brother Cheng, it’s not caution—it’s just that the mainland is strict. If caught, this amount could land you in prison for life,” Long Ge warned.
Xi Yuechen reassured him. “Don’t worry, Brother Long. I have a few capable people with me. I sent them to enjoy themselves, but they’ll come along on the return trip. Besides,” he smiled secretly, a trace of pride on his face, “if I wasn’t confident, would I have dared to come for the purchase? Everything has been properly arranged.”
Long Ge was slightly surprised, thinking quickly before laughing. “Ha! A true hero among men! Brother Cheng, with your abilities, what’s there to worry about? What’s that saying? Great achievements come with time.”
“Brother Long, do you mean ‘given time, one becomes great’?” A Fei, standing behind Long Ge, asked.
“Yes, that’s it. I’m guessing you put in a lot of effort to open this channel?” Long Ge asked. Establishing such connections in the mainland was harder than climbing to heaven. Could Cheng Yue really do it?
“Oh, Brother Long, it was just luck. I happened to notice a certain official in S City and made a small deal. No real skill involved. I still have to pay my respects to him,” Xi Yuechen said with a smile and a sigh.
“I see. Then you must hold onto this channel tightly. Your future wealth depends on it.”
Long Ge laughed, thinking to himself, Honest people can get things done too. If Cheng Yue was telling the truth, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Yanmen had been struggling to enter the mainland. With this channel, once S City is accessible, everything else would follow.
Xi Yuechen could read Long Ge’s thoughts but remained silent, calm inside.
“Alright, I won’t keep you. Brother Cheng, what about your men? Leaving today?” Long Ge asked.
“Yes, goods are ready. Better to leave early to avoid complications. They’re waiting downstairs,” Xi Yuechen said, standing, taking out a bank card, bowing slightly. “This smooth outcome is thanks to you, Brother Long. Please accept this small token.”
A small note with the PIN was attached to the card.
Long Ge accepted it without hesitation, smiling. “Brother Cheng, you’re too polite. Next time you’re in D Province, just contact me. This friend of mine is settled!”
“Thank you for your recognition. We’ll have many opportunities to cooperate, hoping for your guidance,” Xi Yuechen said humbly, shaking Long Ge’s hand. “You stay here, I’ll go first.”
“Nonsense, I should see you off. Let’s go down together,” Long Ge said, pretending to be displeased.
“Really unnecessary. I understand your intentions, but with many people around, it’s better you stay,” Xi Yuechen smiled apologetically.
Long Ge considered and didn’t insist, nodding. “Alright, there will be plenty of cooperation in the future anyway.”
Xi Yuechen lifted his belongings, smiling at Long Ge. “Take care. I’ll leave first, until next time.”
He got into an SUV and quickly disappeared.
From a window upstairs, Long Ge withdrew his gaze, thinking for a moment, then pulled out his phone to make a call. This was important—he needed to report to his superiors. Missing such an opportunity would be disastrous.
This way, the superiors would naturally take Cheng Yue seriously, which was good for Long Ge’s business. He held the bank card, contemplating quietly.
