Ye’s mother took a handkerchief and fiercely wiped her face. “This is good, this is good. As long as the two of you can live peacefully, your father and I will fully support you.”
Upon hearing Si Qiu’s words, Ye’s father and mother finally let out a deep sigh of relief. They had always been worried that their son would quit his job and return home.
Now that he was truly getting married, someone would finally be able to keep him in check. Their whole family could finally settle down as well.
The group returned to the small courtyard. This time, they didn’t go into Si Qiu’s place, but into Ye Shubai’s.
The moment the gate opened, Ye Shubai rushed out from inside. He looked disheveled and broken, yet his hair was only slightly messy and there was no sour summer odor on his body at all.
Si Qiu immediately understood—this guy was acting again.
She reached out and brushed his cheek with her finger. Ye Shubai looked at her as if there was no one else around, and grabbed the corner of her clothes.
He was nearly a head taller than Si Qiu, yet he still managed to act like a clingy little bird nestling against her.
Under everyone’s eager anticipation, the matter of the wedding was officially settled. After that, the two began cleaning the house and sending out invitations. Those familiar with them didn’t think much of it, but outsiders were quite shocked.
Si Qiu was twenty-eight, and Ye Shubai was twenty-two. Yet they had entered a relationship through mutual love, which left many people astonished.
Even the people who came from Chen Village were impressed and gave Si Qiu a thumbs-up. Not only had she found a man several years younger than herself, and one who was extremely good-looking, but most importantly, he had even helped them find jobs for her sake.
Originally, Si Qiu had only planned to let two people from Chen Village come under the pretext of attending the wedding, and then give them a chance to try working in a factory here.
This place had been designated as a nationally important industrial demonstration province, so there were more opportunities than back home. The only issue was that the conditions might be harder to adapt to.
But she was only giving them a chance—whether they came, and whether they could pass, depended entirely on them.
Unexpectedly, they really came—and not just a few. Six men and women arrived, and they were picked up in a truck when they went to fetch them.
All six of them had carried loads on shoulder poles.
When they returned, they were arranged in the small courtyard.
“Uncle, Auntie, these were prepared by my mother,” one of them said.
Before leaving home, the elders had repeatedly instructed them not to call her “little aunt-in-law,” but to call her “aunt.”
A girl pointed at a large sack. “That over there is the quilt made for your dowry. Over there are shoes we made for you.”
“We also brought some wild rabbits, wild chickens, and cured meat. The fifth brother’s basket is full of eggs and duck eggs.”
“And there are also peanuts, mung beans, and other things.”
“How did you bring so much from so far away? You must be exhausted from the journey, right?”
A young man about 1.75 meters tall scratched his head and laughed. “It was what you, little aunt, told us. Who among us hasn’t practiced a bit of martial arts? Even though we’re not as skilled as those who joined the army…”
“But carrying this much wasn’t too difficult. It’s just that my mother was worried we wouldn’t manage it well and might lose things along the way, so she reduced it to this amount.”
“Come, come, sit down and rest. Put the things there; I’ll have the guards help organize them later. Drink some sugar water first. I’ve already sent people to buy food. Eat something first and rest.”
Ye Shubai came over carrying a tray, acting very much like the host.
The few villagers quickly and awkwardly greeted him, “Hello, uncle-in-law. Sorry for troubling you all by coming here.”
Hearing the address “little uncle-in-law,” Ye Shubai was instantly delighted. “What trouble are you talking about? Your little aunt told me you came here looking for work. I happen to have some information about job openings in several units. After dinner, let’s sit down and discuss it—see which ones you’re interested in.”
Although they were all around Ye Shubai’s age, he was still technically a generation above them, so they were naturally a bit reserved. Now that they heard him say this, they became even more embarrassed.
A few of them nervously glanced at Si Qiu’s expression. Only after she nodded in approval did they politely respond to Ye Shubai.
“Thank you, little uncle-in-law, for thinking of us. Having a job where we can eat the state’s rice is already good enough—we wouldn’t dare be picky.”
Chen Changsheng and the guard came back with food.
Privately, Ye Shubai asked Chen Changsheng why those people seemed a little afraid of Si Qiu. Chen Changsheng put an arm around his shoulder and said earnestly: “You know that whip my sister always carries at her waist, right?”
Seeing Ye Shubai nod, he continued, “That whip—since it ended up in my sister’s hands, there are only a handful of people in the entire clan who haven’t been whipped by it.”
He patted Ye Shubai’s shoulder again. “Take me for example—I’ve been beaten into psychological trauma. Brother, you’d better not provoke my sister in the future. If she really wants to beat you, no one can stop her.”
Unexpectedly, Ye Shubai’s face turned slightly red as he said, “If she’s unhappy, it’s fine—even if she hits me to let off steam.”
Chen Changsheng shuddered violently when he heard that. He quickly took a few steps back to keep his distance from him. Afterward, he even muttered to the people from Chen Village that it really was a case of “what kind of pot matches what kind of lid.”
The people from Chen Village had all been carefully selected at home. Since they were traveling so far, not only did they need their own willingness and family approval, they also had to be capable in every aspect.
The village team leader and his wife had said at the time: otherwise, coming out would only bring shame to the family—and also shame to Si Qiu.
Si Qiu naturally understood their personalities and character, so she didn’t stop Ye Shubai from using his connections.
The group was indeed sensible. They helped Chen Changsheng with errands and chores, fully acting as if they were Si Qiu’s natal family backing her up.
On Si Qiu’s side, aside from people from Chen Village, there were also classmates and colleagues.
On the Ye family side, there were many more people—relatives from both parents’ sides, as well as coworkers and comrades-in-arms.
The wedding was quite grand overall, especially since in those years things were not as tense as they would become later.
On the surface, the Ye family’s gift was already generous, but privately they also gave an entire large box of jewelry and gold bars.
Si Qiu sighed inwardly that the Ye family was clearly no ordinary household—truly wealthy and generous.
She had no idea how Ye Shubai had “persuaded” his parents.
At that time, wedding gifts from guests varied: distant relatives gave small gifts, while close ones would bring practical items like pillowcases, enamel cups and basins, bedsheets, quilts, red sugar, pork, and so on.
Aside from the Ye family’s gifts, the Chen family’s dowry was also substantial—clearly they had some family wealth, as they actually gave silver dollars.
Zhao Yiming also came to attend the wedding with his two children. He brought two woven thermos flasks as gifts. Si Qiu also stuffed the children’s pockets full of candy.
As for the money received, not to mention it—just the pillowcases, bedsheets, mirrors, wooden combs, enamel basins, and similar items were enough for her to furnish two households.
On the wedding night, Si Qiu placed the important valuables into a hidden cellar. When she turned around, under the dim yellow light, she saw Ye Shubai’s shirt completely unbuttoned.
One hand rested behind him for support, his body slightly tilted. One leg was stretched out, the other bent, and his arm rested casually on that knee.
