His ridicule made a group of big boys blush. Zhao Jianguo was unconvinced. He couldn’t understand how someone as delicate and weak-looking as Si Qiu could run so well.
So after the running exercise ended and everyone was doing stretching movements, Zhao Jianguo brought two people over.
“You’re Si Qiu, right? You just arrived yesterday? It took you so long to get into medical studies—must’ve pulled quite a few strings, huh?”
It was obvious this guy was here to pick a fight. Si Qiu stood up from the ground and sized him up. She looked him over until the three of them felt uncomfortable, then finally spoke.
“How did you get in here? Not only is your eyesight bad, your hearing’s bad too. And even if your hearing isn’t bad, your memory is terrible.”
She circled around him as she spoke.
“Tsk tsk tsk. Someone like you even got in. Looks like your connections are a lot stronger than mine.”
Zhao Jianguo was so angry he was practically gasping for breath. Si Qiu, as if afraid she wouldn’t anger him enough, wore the face of a delicate little white flower while her words were as poisonous as if they’d been dipped in arsenic.
“Look at you. Your health isn’t great either. Clutching your chest like that… don’t tell me you’ve got heart disease?”
One of the men behind him looked displeased and stepped forward, not sure whether he wanted to argue or do something else, but Zhao Jianguo stopped him.
Meanwhile, the four female classmates all stood behind Si Qiu, glaring angrily at the group opposite them.
“Fine, fine. But we’re going to be police officers in the future. What’s the use of just being able to run? You still need real skills.”
Seeing that Zhao Jianguo had stopped his companion—whether out of fear of the teacher or because he didn’t want things to escalate—Si Qiu’s impression of him improved slightly.
At least he wasn’t completely irrational; he knew how to read the situation.
“Teacher Li also said you have some martial background. How about this? Let’s spar later.”
Si Qiu raised her eyebrows. “Sure. But it’s not like you can just decide to spar whenever you want. If there’s no cost involved, who’s going to put in the effort to entertain you like a monkey?”
Zhao Jianguo was about 1.75 meters tall, only about 10 cm taller than Si Qiu, yet he still forced an air of superiority.
“Hmph! Just state your conditions.”
Si Qiu suppressed her laughter and rested her chin on her hand.
“Alright then. If you win, I’ll give each of you 10 yuan. If you lose—”
“I’ll cover the 30 yuan for you!”
Zhao Jianguo waved his hand generously.
Si Qiu shook her finger. “No, no, I don’t care about your 30 yuan. If you lose, then for the next month you’ll be responsible for all the daily chores for the four of us.”
“You want to treat us like free servants?”
“Don’t put it so harshly. If it weren’t for the bet, we wouldn’t even use you for free.” Though she said it casually, her expression clearly said: you guessed right.
Zhao Jianguo felt that this woman was just too infuriating. “Fine, fine! We’ll settle this in the sparring later!”
As expected, when it came time to teach hand-to-hand combat, Zhao Jianguo immediately raised his hand and stepped forward, requesting to spar with Si Qiu.
Teacher Li Wenbin glanced at Si Qiu. Si Qiu cheerfully raised her hand to agree.
He nodded and stepped aside, and the two of them walked to an open space in front of the class.
Zhao Jianguo immediately assumed a stance. Si Qiu took one look and knew—he had trained in military combat techniques.
Si Qiu immediately stepped forward into a Xingyiquan stance. The moment the usually soft and delicate girl raised her hands, her entire presence changed—her gaze, posture, and aura all turned sharp and imposing.
Zhao Jianguo seemed to sense that his own momentum was slightly weaker and couldn’t help but say, “Don’t think I’ll be scared just because you know a bit of martial arts. My military combat boxing was refined from real battlefield experience against enemies.”
Si Qiu smiled. “Is that so? What a coincidence—I also used Xingyiquan to kill more than ten Japanese soldiers. Why don’t we try and see who’s stronger today?”
Her words weren’t entirely false. In the original body’s family, everyone over the age of twenty in the village, even if they hadn’t personally killed Japanese soldiers, had at least supported rear operations.
Back then, a squad of Japanese soldiers—fifty to sixty men—raided the village, but they were lured into the mountains and killed by the militia leader and his men. The original host herself had been one of the main fighters at the time, wielding a long whip and a saber.
The students around them immediately fell silent, their expressions turning serious.
Li Wenbin’s eyes lit up. He didn’t doubt her words at all—when she assumed that stance, the killing intent in her eyes was unmistakable.
He turned to Zhao Jianguo. “Zhao Jianguo, are you still going to fight? If not, get back to class. Stop causing trouble every day.”
Zhao Jianguo knew he wasn’t a match, so he gave up quite straightforwardly. He quickly dropped his stance and stood properly. “No more fighting, no more fighting. I can’t beat her anyway, so what’s the point? If I lose, I’ll just get beaten up again.”
Then he turned to Si Qiu. “Si Qiu, I was wrong—I was just jealous that your physical fitness is better than mine. I’ll keep my word. From now on, the chores in your dorm will be handled by the three of us.”
Si Qiu nodded at him, then looked at his two unlucky buddies. The two of them were staring at her with bright, sparkling eyes.
Si Qiu couldn’t even be bothered to look at them anymore. She turned to leave the formation, but Li Wenbin stopped her.
“Si Qiu, stay. Since Zhao Jianguo isn’t qualified to spar with you, why don’t you try a match with me instead?”
Si Qiu glanced him over and said, “Teacher Li, you should really rest your right leg more. If you keep forcing it like this, the shrapnel could shift again, and you might not be able to use that leg anymore.”
Li Wenbin’s expression changed. “You—”
“Oh, I learned a little from elders in my clan. I can tell, but I can’t actually treat it. Still, if it’s a dislocation or a sprain, I could probably try.”
Li Wenbin restrained his expression and nodded, signaling her to return to formation.
After they went to eat breakfast, Li Wenbin went to the office, took out Si Qiu’s letter, and then flipped through a small notebook for a long time before finding a comrade’s contact number and making a phone call.
For the entire morning afterward, he felt somewhat uneasy.
It wasn’t until just before the afternoon class that he received a reply, and his expression finally relaxed.
Meanwhile, Zhao Jianguo and the others kept their word. For the next few days, they prepared firewood for heating the kang and water, placing it at the dorm entrance. They even helped line up at the cafeteria.
They also wanted to help wash the others’ lunch boxes, but the girls refused.
Before long, it was the month’s break.
The girls quickly changed clothes and fixed their hair.
“Qiuqiu, your outfit is so pretty,” someone said.
Si Qiu was wearing a white lace satin qipao, paired with white leather shoes that Ye Shubai had given her. Her hair was pinned up with a pearl hair clip.
“Pretty, right? I bought it in Haishi.”
Li Jinfeng rushed in energetically. “What are you all doing? Hurry up! If you keep dawdling, how much time will we even have left to go out and have fun?”
The girls hurried out. Si Qiu locked her trunk, grabbed her bag, and ran after them.
“I was just thinking of bringing the letter so I can mail it later.”
Within a month, Si Qiu had already received a reply to her letters. Her family back home had learned the full details of the situation, since Chen Shuzhuo had also written home.
