“It’s exactly that. The two of them are practically like real siblings anyway. How could they trouble you, an outsider? Besides, even if it’s trouble for me, isn’t it better than drinking plain water that doesn’t quench thirst?”
He turned toward Si Qiu and said, “Comrade Si Qiu, don’t worry. If you run into any trouble in the city, come find me. We don’t cause trouble, but we’re not afraid of it either.”
“Thank you, Director Song.”
Director Song waved his hand. “My name is Song Tingyu, I’m thirty-eight this year. Just call me Brother Song. You’re a young woman out here alone—since I brought you here, I can’t just ignore you.”
Song Tingyu didn’t mention that he had already discussed her with the political commissar. This girl had earned merit at a higher level and had undergone strict background checks.
That was why he dared to take responsibility so boldly. Otherwise, even if he valued talent, he wouldn’t have immediately pulled someone into the team.
Jiang Yiming could only watch helplessly as his old comrade dismantled his words. He casually took out a pen and notebook, wrote down a phone number, tore out the page, and handed it to Si Qiu.
“This is my office number. Whoever you need to reach, if anything comes up, just call this.”
Si Qiu softly said thank you, took the note, folded it carefully, and put it into her pocket—though in reality, she had already placed it into her spatial storage.
Hearing her gentle voice say “thank you,” Jiang Yiming felt something tighten in his chest. He wasn’t some inexperienced boy; he understood exactly what this feeling meant.
He was decisive by nature. Since he had already formed a thought in his mind, he acted on it immediately.
The car entered the city, and Jiang Yiming directly told Chen Changsheng to head to the Public Security Bureau.
“Old comrade, let’s drop you back at the bureau first. You can report on the previous assignment. Then I’ll accompany the two of them to the training class.”
Song Tingyu gave him a meaningful look. “Alright, then come in first. I’ll get you a clearance slip.”
He turned and walked into the office. The group got out of the car. Si Qiu carried her bag and followed him into Song Tingyu’s office, where he took a form from a drawer.
Si Qiu quickly handed over her identification documents.
After filling out the paperwork, signing, and stamping it, Song Tingyu and Jiang Yiming then took the document to the director’s office. No one knew what was said inside.
Very soon, the clearance slip was approved. Jiang Yiming took it, folded it once, and tucked it into his pocket. Then he rolled up his sleeves and checked his watch.
“Ten o’clock exactly. We can finish everything before noon. Once it’s done, I’ll come pick you up and we’ll go eat together.”
Song Tingyu waved him off, clearly not wanting to talk further.
They drove to the training center, which turned out to be inside a technical secondary school. This intake only had one class with 22 students.
They went to register with the clearance slip. The clerk didn’t say much, but gave Si Qiu a reminder:
“There are only four girls in this class, so you’ll be living mixed with students from other majors. Keep the dorm clean and get along with others.
Also, students in the training program have morning exercises. Everyone gathers at the field at 6 a.m. for an hour and a half of physical training, followed by half an hour for breakfast, then classes.
Don’t be late.”
The clerk looked at her with some pity. After all, this training program had physical requirements, and this woman looked delicate and soft.
Si Qiu found the look strange, but didn’t care. She smiled and thanked the staff member politely.
Under their guidance, she exchanged for some meal tickets. Looking at her documents, her household registration had been placed under the city Public Security Bureau as “awaiting assignment training.”
She would later be assigned there directly. Even now, she was receiving 30% of her salary. This was far better than she had expected, and it finally made her feel at ease. A smile couldn’t help but spread across her face.
She knew that there must have been credit from Director Song and Jiang Yiming, so after all the paperwork was completed, she quickly moved her luggage to the dormitory.
She didn’t want to delay lunch.
“Let’s hurry up, don’t make Director Song miss lunch. Things went so smoothly this time, I absolutely have to treat him to a meal to thank Director Song and Commander Jiang. Commander Jiang, thank you for your care and support from the military.” Along the way, she had been fortunate enough to meet many benefactors.
Jiang Yiming was happy that she hadn’t ignored him, but at the same time felt a bit disappointed by her politeness.
Fortunately, he knew that pursuing a wife required thick skin, so he quickly adjusted his mood. “No need to be so polite. We’re not outsiders. Same as I said before—if you have any problems in the future, just come to me.”
Because the dormitory was already full of students, they were stopped by the dorm supervisor, and the two of them only sent her to the entrance. Si Qiu carried her luggage into the dorm in two trips.
It was already getting late, and since they had already agreed to have lunch with Song Tingyu, she didn’t have time to tidy up her luggage. She just placed it on the empty bed.
Then she hurried downstairs, which allowed her to avoid the students who were just finishing class and going out for lunch.
“Sis, are you that happy?”
“You can tell?”
“If I can’t tell, who can? Your mouth is almost stretched to your ears.”
Si Qiu smacked the back of his head. “If you can’t talk properly, just shut your mouth.”
Jiang Yiming watched the two of them teasing each other, and during the bumps of the car ride, he kept his hand ready on the side to protect Si Qiu so she wouldn’t lose balance and hit herself.
He looked attentive and considerate, and Si Qiu’s impression of him improved quite a bit.
They met up with Song Tingyu and a few others and went to Futai Building, a top-tier Shandong cuisine restaurant famous for dishes like bird’s nest banquet items, braised bear paw, and stir-fried fish slices.
Some signature dishes required advance reservation, but even the regular dishes were extremely delicious. Of course, the prices were also very high—usually only political and business elites hosted banquets there.
The four of them did not reserve a private room and sat in the main hall. Si Qiu first took the menu and handed it to Director Song; it was obvious who was treating.
Director Song ordered one dish, then passed the menu to Commander Jiang.
Jiang Yiming also ordered a meat dish, and finally the menu was passed to Si Qiu, who ordered four dishes and one soup.
She naturally chose some relatively expensive dishes. Director Song raised his hand to stop her. “Xiaoqiu, there’s no need to spend so much. We’re all family here.”
After ordering, she handed the menu to the waiter.
“Director Song, you should know I recently came into some unexpected money, so…”
She was admitted with her work placement. At the time, Director Song Tingyu and Jiang Yiming had gone to the bureau director’s office to explain her previous incident of bravely fighting spies.
The bureau director had even called the higher authorities. Although her detailed file could not be sent over immediately, there were commendations and certificates from above.
The director directly stamped approval, which was how she successfully enrolled. So her past was not something that could remain secret.
“Fair enough, you do have some luck with money. Then I won’t hold back.”
From his expression, it was clear that Jiang Yiming also knew about her situation, while only Chen Changsheng didn’t fully understand—but he trusted Si Qiu for no particular reason.
So he just smiled happily, looking a bit silly.
As expected of a famous restaurant, the meal was thoroughly enjoyable for both guests and hosts.
