Hu Jiaojiao also handed over a silk scarf. “This was brought back from Haishi by my aunt. Qiuqiu, you’re so pretty—you should be eating well, wearing well, and using good things.”
“But those people who approach you with ulterior motives, just stay away from them. We’re not short of what they can offer anyway.”
Wen Hongying nodded along, agreeing with her words.
Qiuqiu inwardly sighed. People always called her out, labeling men as vile and extreme—but look at how the girls treated her. Their affection was far more sincere than those so-called vile men.
Qiuqiu softly responded, making the two girls feel like even the sunlight today was brighter.
“Qiuqiu, come home with me today, okay? My older brother came back this time and brought a lot of delicious food. There are many canned fruits unique to the south.”
“There are also all kinds of seafood. I’ll have our housekeeper cook them for you.”
Si Qiu felt a bit tempted. Even though she had access to such things in her spatial storage, she still had to be careful around others, so eating wasn’t always enjoyable.
In the end, Si Qiu nodded firmly.
Du Hongying happily sat back down to wait for class. After school, Si Qiu was dragged by her to ride a bicycle back to the compound.
Along the way, they sent Yun Zhe, who had come looking for Si Qiu, to deliver a message to the twins of the Si family.
Yun Zhe happily took the task and ran off to the middle school. He just happened to see the twins heading home and immediately grabbed Si Bei’s arm.
“Let go of me! Who are you?” Si Bei shouted.
Si Xi, unlike his younger brother, didn’t panic, because he recognized this guy—the one who often brought things to Si Qiu.
Ever since only the three of them were left at home, she couldn’t help but compare herself with Si Qiu. Even from their names, it was obvious who had once been the most favored.
But that was in the past.
“What are you yelling for, kid? Qiuqiu asked me to tell you to go home and pass on a message. She won’t be coming home for dinner tonight.”
After hearing Si Qiu’s message, Si Bei stopped struggling. He looked Yun Zhe up and down, snorted coldly, and said, “Got it. You black charcoal guy, stay away from my sister in the future.”
Then he turned and pulled Si Xi away. Once home, he went straight to his room, took out a biscuit tin, grabbed two biscuits, and ran off to play again.
Si Xi walked into the kitchen mechanically to cook. In her heart, she once again began questioning everything.
Why did Si Qiu get so much love from so many people? Was it really just because of her face?
But why wasn’t that face hers instead? She looked exactly like her mother, not even inheriting a fraction of her father’s good features.
During the meal, she filled herself with resentment toward everyone in the family, while her hands moved like a machine, preparing the food.
Meanwhile, Si Qiu, although accompanied by Du Hongying, still went through the registration process to enter the compound.
She had always known that Wen Hongying’s family background was extraordinary, but she hadn’t expected them to be living in a military compound.
“Qiuqiu, make yourself at home. My dad only comes back two days a month. My mom is busy at the hospital and often on duty, so she rarely comes home—and when she does, it’s usually very late.”
“My brother came back yesterday, so she took leave. She should be quite busy for the next few days.”
Si Qiu nodded cutely, her big eyes blinking with a slightly confused expression. “So you’re always alone at home?”
“No, we have Aunt Hui who cooks for us.”
Oh, so there’s someone who cooks—that’s really nice. She also wanted someone to cook for her in the future. Of course, the food had to be better than Si Xi’s cooking.
If Si Xi weren’t still useful for serving her for the time being, Si Qiu would have already dealt with her, just because of those gloomy, watchful stares.
After Wen Hongying finished speaking with Aunt Hui to prepare their dishes, she quickly pulled Si Qiu upstairs to her room.
She had secretly taken quite a few good things from her brother. She made Si Qiu sit on her bed, then took out several jars of canned food from the bottom of the wardrobe.
All were fruits rarely seen in the north, soaked in honey water. Through the transparent glass jars, they looked as if they were slowly tempting her.
She pointed at a bottle of pineapple jam. “Redying, let’s try this.”
Seeing her interest, Hongying immediately broke into a smile. “Alright, alright. I’ll open it for you right now. Let’s properly taste this—it already looks delicious.”
Si Qiu said nothing, just watched her open it.
Wen Hongying struggled a bit before finally managing to open the can. She poured it into a large bowl, then portioned it into smaller bowls.
She placed a spoon in it and set it beside Si Qiu.
Si Qiu smiled sweetly at her and said thank you, then lowered her head and started eating the canned fruit.
Mm, very sweet—and a little too sweet, almost cloying—but it was still really good.
At that moment, Wen Luo returned from outside. He had just gone to look for that little girl, but unfortunately she had gone out to play and no one knew where she had gone.
In the bag he was carrying was a cleaned hen. He had specifically asked a friend to get him a fairly plump old hen.
He planned to make chicken soup and bring it to the girl. With her family situation—parents who didn’t really care about her—she might even be mistreated.
Although he sent her money, food coupons, and supplies every month, with how weak and delicate she looked, he still wasn’t sure she could manage on her own.
He could also leave some chicken soup for his younger sister, since he would still need her help looking after things later.
Dressed in a white naval uniform, the crisp cap made him look especially sharp. Combined with his firm facial features, he carried a striking, capable aura.
“Aunt Hui, make half of this chicken into soup, and the other half braised. Put some of the soup into a thermos, and pack some braised chicken pieces into a lunchbox.”
Aunt Hui wiped her hands on her apron and came out to take the chicken, nodding. “Alright, I’ve got it. Should I start braising the other half right away?”
“Yes. Once it’s done, I’ll take some to my mother. Is she on duty again today?”
Aunt Hui nodded. “Yes, she seems to have surgeries these couple of days. Her schedule is pretty full. Oh right, Hongying told me to cook some of the seafood you brought back. She’s planning to entertain the friend she brought home. We can just take some of it to the hospital later.”
“Hongying brought a friend back?”
“Yes, a very pretty young girl.”
Wen Luo nodded and went upstairs.
Anyone his sister brought home—no need to guess, it had to be that little girl. He hadn’t expected that after searching all morning, she would actually be at his own house.
But as soon as he reached upstairs, he heard his sister’s slightly flattering voice.
“Si Qiu, we’re about to eat soon. Let’s finish this piece and stop eating, alright? Otherwise you won’t be able to eat later.”
Then a soft, sweet voice sounded in response.
“Oh, okay then!”
Her tone carried a hint of reluctance, making people instinctively want to satisfy her.
“Don’t worry, Si Qiu. I’ll pack the rest of this canned fruit for you so you can take it home and eat it slowly.”
“Hongying, you’re so nice!”
Just a few words—and it made people want to give her even more.
Wen Luo unconsciously lightened his steps as he approached the door, which wasn’t fully closed.
Through the crack, he saw a beautiful girl sitting on the bed.
She was eating something in small, delicate bites—obedient and adorable, making people want to pull her into their arms and dote on her.
“Brother, why are you standing at the door?”
Wen Luo snapped back to reality and put on a gentle smile. “You brought Si Qiu home today—why didn’t you tell me?”
