In normal mode, even under highway settings, the maximum speed of the new energy vehicle was capped at 260 km/h. For ordinary drivers, once the speed exceeded 150 km/h, the car became difficult to control—one careless move could easily end in a fatal crash. The 260 km/h maximum was really just a theoretical figure. Still, that top speed already matched some high-end imported cars.
Since domestic roads had a maximum legal speed limit of 120 km/h, the number wasn’t of much practical use.
However, with this new energy vehicle, even at 260 km/h, safety could still be guaranteed.
But in racing mode, the maximum speed had been boosted to 450 km/h. It was said that F1 race cars could reach over 900 km/h, but that number had little meaning, since even in professional F1, very few drivers ever broke the 400 km/h mark.
Yet on these winding mountain roads, Mei Qing and Ji Jiaxin had already pushed their cars to the maximum limit—and still weren’t satisfied. That was downright insane.
Zhang Jiaohua and the others also floored their cars to maximum speed, but since their start had been too far behind, no matter how they tried, they could only watch the two cars far ahead on the map.
Even at 450 km/h, the car’s stability was flawless, and noise was still perfectly controlled. It was nothing short of miraculous.
“At this rate, there’s no way we’ll catch up with Teacher Mei and Jiaxin,” Zhang Jiaohua muttered to himself.
“Jiaohua, don’t you have some trick up your sleeve?” Qi Xia thought he had some hidden override to cancel the speed limit.
“What trick could I possibly have? Isn’t the system managed by Nie Tong and Mute? Ask them if they left a backdoor,” Zhang Jiaohua laughed.
“Hey! You can’t do that. We all agreed to a fair race. Now you’re thinking about removing speed limits? What’s the meaning of this?” Mei Qing demanded.
“Relax, Teacher Mei. There’s no backdoor. If there were, we’d have used it already. When we designed this, we didn’t expect to be racing against you today!” Nie Tong regretted deeply—why hadn’t he left himself a backdoor?
Meanwhile, Zhang Jiaohua was pondering another approach. If he couldn’t break the speed cap, maybe he could reduce resistance. At high speeds, drag was the main enemy—the faster you went, the stronger the resistance. Friction was also a factor, but reducing friction wasn’t an option; without it, power couldn’t translate into forward motion.
So, if he could reduce drag, the car’s speed would naturally climb.
Zhang Jiaohua quickly cast several Wind Riding Spells on the car’s body. Suddenly, air resistance vanished as if swept away. The car shot forward, speed surging instantly. After all, speed control wasn’t really about limiting velocity directly—it was about capping maximum power output. With resistance drastically reduced, it was as though the speed limit had been bypassed.
“Jiaohua! That’s cheating!” Zhang Yuanbao was the first to notice something was off.
Jiaohua’s car suddenly jumped from the fourth group up to the third, even overtaking Yuanbao’s car.
“How am I cheating? I didn’t change the speed limit,” Zhang Jiaohua grinned.
“No way! You must be. We’re all at max speed, and yet you just shot past us. Something fishy’s going on!” Yuanbao refused to believe otherwise.
“Ask Nie Tong and Mute. They know the limit system best,” Jiaohua said, refusing to admit anything.
“The limit system looks normal… but that jump in speed makes no sense,” Nie Tong said after inspecting the diagnostics.
“Wait—that’s impossible. Jiaohua’s car is already at 600 km/h! Look!” Mute displayed the team’s speed rankings.
“If the limiter’s intact, then he must’ve tampered elsewhere. He reduced drag! That’s it—he used Daoist arts! Does that count as cheating?” Nie Tong suddenly realized.
“Of course it does!” Qi Xia said bitterly, watching Jiaohua’s car blur past.
Ji Jiaxin giggled: “Zhang Jiaohua, stop cheating, or your race results are void!”
“Yes, void his results!” Yuanbao added gleefully.
“But you never said Daoist techniques weren’t allowed! It’s just another form of driving skill,” Jiaohua argued shamelessly.
“Then we’ll vote on it,” Ji Jiaxin proposed.
Just then, Kong Fangzhou suddenly said: “Sect Master, I remembered—there’s an auction coming up in a few days. Are you interested in attending?”
“Why are you bringing this up now?” Jiaohua asked, puzzled.
“Old Kong, you’re not trying to defend Jiaohua, are you?” Ji Jiaxin teased.
“No, it just reminded me of something,” Kong Fangzhou explained.
“Does the auction have something that caught your eye?” Jiaohua asked directly.
“Yes. I saw the listings. There’s an ancient sword up for auction. But from the pictures, I doubt it’s an ordinary antique. It looks like a true magical artifact. The material is extraordinary. I want to go and see it—maybe even secure it,” Kong Fangzhou said.
“Then get it. Money isn’t an issue. Once our new energy cars hit the market, cash flow won’t be a problem,” Jiaohua said.
“Then will you come to the auction too?” Kong Fangzhou asked.
“I’ll go. When and where?”
“This weekend, at the Xu Auction House in the capital,” Kong Fangzhou answered.
The coincidence made Jiaohua freeze.
Ji Jiaxin giggled: “What a coincidence.”
Jiaohua looked a little awkward. “Yes, quite the coincidence.”
He suddenly thought of Xu Xiaoting, his classmate. Nearly two years had passed without seeing her. For reasons unknown, she had deliberately kept her distance from him.
“Xu Xiaoting must be close to graduation now, right?” Jiaohua sighed.
“She’s almost done. Actually, she already finished her studies a while ago, but she was admitted to a combined master’s-doctorate program. She’ll be in the capital for a few more years,” Ji Jiaxin explained, clearly well-informed.
“How do you know that so well?” Jiaohua asked curiously.
“She’s my good friend, of course I’d know,” Ji Jiaxin replied.
