PCJ – Chapter 681 Failed?

One of the trial participants in Bed 20 began to experience a slowing heartbeat, and his breathing even stopped.

“Should we perform CPR immediately?” Most of the caregivers here were descendants from the Meishan Sect’s affiliated families who had medical training. This time, they had entered the secret realm thanks to this opportunity. For them, this was an extremely valuable chance. Back in their families, they had always been on the fringes, but through this experiment, they now had access to core secrets of the sect.

Mei Qing hesitated. Although she wasn’t trained in medicine, as a Ph.D. in biotechnology, she was not unfamiliar with medical knowledge. She was uncertain what to do.

“No need. Keep observing.” At this moment, a voice came from the observation room—Zhang Jiaohua had spoken.

Everyone was surprised and looked toward Zhang Jiaohua, not understanding why he would interfere with the experiment at this moment.

Wei Chenguang immediately raised his voice, “Follow the Sect Master’s instructions. In the Meishan Sect, no one is allowed to enjoy power without taking responsibility. The outcome of this experiment is extremely important to the sect.”

Strangely, though the participant had stopped breathing and his heartbeat had slowed, it remained steady. His brainwaves also seemed to enter a suspended state—one that was odd. It wasn’t like brain damage or brain death, but more like a state of hibernation.

As time passed, a few minutes later, another participant also entered a hibernation-like state. Meanwhile, the first participant’s condition remained unchanged.

An hour later, nearly 70% of the participants had entered this hibernation state.

The optimized reagent’s predicted safety threshold had still not been reached. For those who entered the hibernation state, the reagent input was stopped. As for the rest, they began to show physiological instability, though still within safety margins.

Another hour passed, during which the number of new hibernation cases drastically decreased—only a few more entered that state, a clear decline from the earlier wave.

Suddenly, one of the participants’ heart rate spiked, breathing became rapid, brainwaves chaotic, and electrolytes were wildly unstable…

“Stop the optimized reagent for Bed 78 and prepare for emergency resuscitation,” Mei Qing immediately ordered.

By now, Mei Qing had begun to recognize some patterns in the clinical trial.

Medical staff were already in place, and emergency equipment had been brought over. As soon as Mei Qing gave the word, they would begin the resuscitation procedures.

This time, Zhang Jiaohua didn’t intervene. He could see that the participant was in critical condition and could collapse at any moment. If the person could pull through, maybe they would experience a transformation. But not everyone could endure such a massive impact.

Even after stopping the reagent, the participant didn’t stabilize.

“Puh!”

The participant suddenly sat up on the bed and coughed up a large mouthful of blood, spraying the nearby medical staff member completely.

“Quick! Begin resuscitation! Apply emergency measures now!” Mei Qing calmly took charge.

“Wait!” Zhang Jiaohua suddenly interrupted her command, but then quickly changed his mind. “Never mind. Go ahead and resuscitate.”

Mei Qing was puzzled as to why he had interrupted her only to back off. But now wasn’t the time to ask. “Continue resuscitation!”

The medical staff were also briefly stunned, but quickly resumed their tasks.

Wei Chenguang, being an old fox, instantly understood why Zhang Jiaohua had acted that way. But he would never say it out loud—whether he was right or wrong—because once a superior sees through your thoughts, they might start to dislike you. Those in power don’t like having their intentions laid bare. As a leader within the Wei family, Wei Chenguang was well-versed in this.

Mei Qing remained calm on the surface, but the fine sweat beads on her forehead betrayed her inner tension. When that man suddenly spat blood, her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. She almost panicked. So many had entered that strange state earlier—was it a blessing or a curse? With no prior experience to go on, Mei Qing had no way to judge. What did reassure her, however, was that Zhang Jiaohua had stopped them from intervening with those in hibernation. She knew he wasn’t someone who disregarded human life. If he had forbidden resuscitation, he must have had his reasons. And from the current results, it did seem that those in the hibernation state might not be in danger.

But had the experiment succeeded or failed? Mei Qing couldn’t tell.

Infusions continued for the other participants. While everyone’s attention was fixed on Bed 78, a few more entered hibernation, and several others began to show unstable vital signs.

“Stop them all,” Mei Qing decided firmly.

After stopping the reagent, the unstable vital signs of those individuals began to stabilize gradually.

In the end, nearly 80% of participants fell into a coma-like state. Around 20% experienced some physiological instability.

Among them was a particularly strange case—one participant had received the full dose of the reagent within the safety range, yet showed no change at all.

“What should we do with this one?” An assistant approached Mei Qing for instructions. Though this assistant came from a prestigious background and held high status in society, in front of Mei Qing, he didn’t dare show any discontent. He was completely respectful.

“Prepare another unit of the optimized reagent. Continue the test,” Mei Qing replied after a brief thought.

Even with another full unit, it would still fall within the safe dosage range. Mei Qing jotted some notes in a logbook before finalizing her decision.

But to everyone’s surprise, even after receiving another full unit of reagent, the participant remained completely unaffected.

“Is there anything special about this participant compared to the others? Bring me his medical report,” Mei Qing sensed something was off.

An assistant quickly brought over the report. One look, and Mei Qing’s brows furrowed.

“How did this participant get selected?” she said coldly, turning to glare at the person responsible for participant selection.

In the observation room, Wei Chenguang was also breaking into a sweat. “That bastard!”

“What’s going on?” Zhang Jiaohua asked.

“He’s from our Wei family. I didn’t think he’d be so bold!” Wei Chenguang kept glancing at Zhang Jiaohua’s expression.

“Handle it yourself later. Don’t let something like this happen again,” Zhang Jiaohua said, shooting a look his way.

Wei Chenguang suddenly felt like an ant crushed in Zhang Jiaohua’s palm. With just a light squeeze, he could be wiped out entirely.
