“What’s going on?” Tokuda Yuhiko glanced outside when he heard the broadcast.
“Something seems to have happened. I’ll go find out,” Tokuda Nofu said quickly.
Just then, several employees from the Tokuda Corporation walked in.
“Chairman, something’s happened outside,” said a man in his early thirties.
“What is it?” Tokuda Nofu asked.
“It’s the lab mice—they’ve escaped onto the deck! These experimental mice are extremely aggressive. Regular people can’t deal with them at all,” the young man said in a panic.
“Fools! Calm down! Do you understand? Don’t panic!” Tokuda Yuhiko barked angrily. “Quick, tell me the situation out there! Those experimental mice are very important to us. I want you to go and bring the situation under control!”
“Y-yes, Chairman,” the man stammered, but before he could run off, someone else knocked on the door.
“Chairman, Chairman! Bad news!”
“Open the door,” Tokuda Yuhiko ordered, still unclear about the true severity of the situation. He was extremely dissatisfied with his subordinates. He had seen the experimental mice himself—they were only slightly larger than regular white mice. Perhaps the experiments had caused some mutations, but that was exactly why the mice were important: they might be the breakthrough that allowed Tokuda Corporation to rise to the ranks of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
In Japan, Tokuda Corporation was already among the top, but compared to the global pharmaceutical giants of Europe and the U.S., they were insignificant. If they could master this in-vitro cultivation technology, however, they could become a global leader.
Tokuda Yuhiko had waited a long time for this opportunity and would not allow anything to ruin it.
The door opened, and several sharply dressed young men stumbled in, now looking completely disheveled. They were part of the team that had stolen the mice and reagent—corporate spies meticulously trained by the Tokuda Corporation. These operatives had been instrumental in the company’s development over the years.
But now, they looked nothing like elite agents—more like battered survivors. Their clothes were torn, and their bodies were covered in injuries.
“What on earth happened?” Tokuda Yuhiko asked in shock.
“Chairman, those white mice are extremely aggressive. These injuries—all of them were caused by their attacks.”
“I appreciate your loyalty. It’s thanks to your sacrifice that we’ve managed to secure those mice. This means a lot to Tokuda Corporation. Once we return to headquarters, I will reward you all,” Tokuda Yuhiko said gratefully.
“Chairman, you’ve misunderstood. We didn’t manage to contain the mice. They’re too numerous—and too fierce. We were overwhelmed almost instantly. Their claws and teeth are terrifyingly sharp, and they have incredible vitality. We barely escaped to bring the warning. You must evacuate the yacht immediately. If they attack, we won’t be able to defend ourselves.”
“What did you say?” Tokuda Yuhiko’s eyes widened. He could hardly believe what he was hearing.
“Chairman, please evacuate! If those experimental mice reach this area, we’ll have no way of stopping them!”
Meanwhile, outside, hundreds of experimental mice were rampaging through the ship. Initially, the ship’s security team had tried to drive the mice overboard, but when they attempted to do so, the mice went berserk and launched a full-scale assault on the humans.
One guard swung an electric baton and managed to knock away a few mice. But the next moment, a swarm of them overwhelmed him, burying him in a sea of white bodies. When they finally scattered, the guard was left barely alive.
His body was shredded, barely an inch of skin intact. Even his ears were mostly chewed off. He twitched a few times before falling completely still—dead.
Chaos erupted on the cruise ship. Passengers fled in every direction.
Some rooms were locked from the inside, and the people inside refused to open the doors. Those outside banged and begged to be let in. In this moment of crisis, human nature showed its darkest side—self-preservation over everything else.
“Please open the door! Let me in! I’m begging you!”
“Get lost! Don’t drag us down with you. If we let you in, we’ll all die!”
Elsewhere, a beautiful young woman stood outside another cabin, pounding on the door with all her strength. But the door wouldn’t budge. The man inside—who had once whispered sweet promises and eternal love—had now chosen to abandon her.
“You promised me you’d never leave me! Why are you doing this?” she sobbed.
From inside, the man replied coldly, “There are tons of pretty girls like you out there. I could find someone else anytime. Love? Wake up! Does true love even exist anymore? Life only comes once. If I lose it, money and love are all worthless.”
Strangely, the white mice didn’t attack the girl. Instead, they simply swerved around her. It was as if they didn’t even see her.
They seemed completely uninterested in people who posed no threat.
“Look! The mice aren’t attacking randomly! Everyone, don’t move. Let them pass! We’re not their targets!” a bold young man suddenly shouted after noticing this crucial detail.
Everyone froze, dropping whatever improvised weapons they’d picked up. No one wanted to fight a swarm of killer mice.
Indeed, the white mice had a very specific target in mind. Their top priority was to attack the people who had kidnapped them onto the ship. Second, they were attracted to a certain scent—specifically, the bioactive reagent. That bottle had been opened, and its spiritual energy had leaked out. To these mice, with their highly sensitive noses, the reagent was like a beacon in the night.
The Tokuda operatives eventually realized this too.
“They’re coming for us! They’re not attacking the others, but they’re coming after us—and they won’t stop until we’re dead! We’re in big trouble!”
“Quick! Someone inform the Chairman!”
Now, Tokuda Yuhiko faced a difficult decision: to abandon everything, or to hold his ground. For him, it was an agonizing dilemma.
Far away in the southwest, Zhang Jiaohua knew nothing of the chaos unfolding on the cruise ship.
At the moment, he was directing villagers in installing a row of water pumps in Yingpan Village. A dozen electric pumps had already been set up. This was the maximum load the village transformer could handle. Adding any more would risk overloading and collapsing the entire power grid.
