“Our village isn’t the only one buying wives; if you’ve got the guts, arrest everyone who bought wives in our village! Don’t think I don’t understand the law. Only traffickers get jailed. For us buyers, at worst, we lose both money and wife. Zhang, you can’t scare me,” Gu Quansuo shouted.
The common mindset is to avoid punishing the many for the fault of a few. If it were just one person, maybe no one would dare buy wives from traffickers. But since several villagers bought wives, they felt less afraid.
“Which ones are you talking about? You buy women to get wives, but do you know how many families have been ruined because of you? No matter who buys wives, it’s illegal and against conscience. I won’t pretend I didn’t see it,” Zhang Jiaohua said.
“Gu Wenliang, Gu Chenghe — they bought wives with me, plus some who bought earlier and some later. If you dare offend the whole village, let’s see how you’ll manage the saline-alkali reclamation project!” Gu Quansuo tried to stir the whole village to oppose Zhang Jiaohua.
Gu Wenliang and Gu Chenghe, who had been watching nearby, were furious when Gu Quansuo dragged them into it.
“Quansuo! Damn you, why drag everyone down with you?” Gu Wenliang asked.
“Wenliang, that Zhang guy pinned me down for a while, and you just watched. You think I’m the only one who bought wives? If I’m done for, none of you will have a good life. If I’m going to die, I’m taking you all with me,” Gu Quansuo said.
Gu Chenghe cursed, “Who told you to run to Zhang and surrender? Didn’t we agree you’d lay low for a while? Now you’ve caused trouble and want to drag us down, what do you mean?”
“No meaning. The troublemaker here is that Zhang guy. You all gang up on him, pin him down, beat him up, and kick him out of the village. Worst case, we hide in the mountains; what can he do to us then?” Gu Quansuo said.
“Don’t listen to Quansuo. This can’t be messed with. Zhang is a cadre sent from above. If you hurt him, you’ve committed a serious crime and will suffer for it,” Gu Yongyi warned, seeing that Gu Wenliang and others were nearly convinced by Gu Quansuo.
“Uncle Yongyi, whose village are you from? Why are you sucking up to an outsider? We spent a fortune buying wives, and now this outsider wants to take them away and send us to jail. What should we do?” Gu Quansuo retorted.
Gu Wenliang agreed, “Uncle Yongyi, you saw and heard everything just now. We don’t want to go against Zhang, but he’s pushed us into a corner. We struggled to get these wives. Now he wants to take them away and jail us. He’s driving us to desperation!”
Zhang Jiaohua asked, “What do you want to do? If you dare follow Gu Quansuo’s lead and come at me, I’ll deal with you one by one.”
“Go, all of you! I don’t believe he has three heads and six arms. You hold him down; I’ll teach him a lesson!” Gu Quansuo shouted.
“Crack!” Zhang Jiaohua twisted Gu Quansuo’s arm, dislocating it. Gu Quansuo screamed in pain.
Gu Wenliang and five others surrounded Zhang Jiaohua. Seeing this, their scalps tingled. But there was no turning back now—they braced themselves and attacked.
“Brothers! No time to hesitate. Let’s go!” Gu Wenliang yelled.
Six people pounced from all sides. Normally, Zhang Jiaohua would have nowhere to dodge. If they restrained his limbs, even his strength wouldn’t help him escape.
Gu Baishui was unsure what to do but secretly hoped Zhang Jiaohua would be held down and taught a lesson—preferably making him leave Yingpan Village.
Gu Yongyi and Gu Chuangui panicked.
Gu Yongyi tried to intervene but was held back by Gu Baoxing, a timid villager.
“Yongyi, some things you better not side with outsiders. This is a serious warning!” Gu Baoxing gave Gu Chuangui a sharp look.
Seeing this, Gu Yongyi dared not move.
Gu Chuangui shouted, “Let go of Uncle Zhang!”
However, things didn’t go as expected. Zhang Jiaohua wasn’t pinned down; he caught Gu Wenliang as he charged and threw him at Gu Chenghe attacking from the opposite side. He did the same to the others.
One by one, Zhang Jiaohua dislocated an arm or leg, rendering them immobile. Soon, seven men lay sprawled on the ground.
“Well, well, you brought this on yourselves,” Zhang Jiaohua said coldly, then looked at Gu Baishui. “Secretary Gu, you saw for yourself. These people attacked me to prevent their wife-buying crimes from being exposed. Buying and selling women and children is a serious crime. As village official of Yingpan, I must report to the police. I will also report to higher authorities.”
“Sigh! Do whatever you want,” Gu Baishui sighed and left, disappointed as things hadn’t gone as he wished.
Zhang Jiaohua took out his phone and called 110. The police quickly contacted the Tianbaqiao town station, which would send officers to handle the human trafficking case.
After hanging up, Zhang Jiaohua called Zhu Qingdong.
“You should have told me first. You shouldn’t report so rashly. This will affect the reputation of our town and even the county and city. We need to minimize the impact,” Zhu Qingdong mildly criticized.
“Mayor Zhu, I wanted to minimize the impact, but these people were too arrogant,” Zhang Jiaohua replied.
