“Make way, make way, let me take a look… I know a bit of medicine. Someone hurry up and call an ambulance. I’ll do some basic treatment first.” Zhang Jiaohua squeezed through the crowd and walked up to check on Yang Yongqiang’s condition. Although the man had been a bit overbearing earlier, a life was at stake. If he could lend a hand, there was no reason not to. Zhang Jiaohua clearly understood that Yang Yongqiang wasn’t acting out of personal spite, but because of Zhu Qingdong. Even though Zhang Jiaohua had never worked in politics, it was obvious from the meeting that there was friction between the town mayor and the party secretary. His own involvement had disrupted the balance between them, so Yang Yongqiang ended up resenting him as well.

As soon as the town officials heard that Zhang knew medicine, they immediately stepped aside to make room for him.

Zhang went over and saw that Yang Yongqiang’s leg was broken — it was bent above the ankle in a way that made people’s skin crawl. If the bone wasn’t properly aligned now, it could cause severe long-term complications. He doubted a rural place like Tianbaqiao Town would have skilled orthopedic doctors for such trauma.

Zhu Qingdong glanced at Yang and immediately pulled out his phone to call emergency services. From the look of it, Yang Yongqiang wouldn’t be back at work anytime soon. This meant full control of Tianbaqiao Town would now rest in his hands, including the Yingpan Village project — no more interference from Yang. He was pleased by this turn of events and couldn’t help thinking: Even the heavens must be fed up with Yang Yongqiang. Time to give me a break. Thank you, Heaven!

Zhang Jiaohua squatted down, grabbed Yang’s leg, and with a swift and forceful motion, pulled and snapped it back into alignment. A loud crack echoed as the bone clicked into place.

“AAAHHH!”

Yang Yongqiang screamed in agony.

Of course, this was far from painless. In fact, the pain was so intense that Yang regained consciousness. Opening his eyes, he saw Zhang gripping his injured leg.

“What the hell are you doing?! Trying to kill me?!” Yang roared.

“Shut up! Stop just standing there—someone get me two wooden boards. If we don’t fix his leg now, he’ll suffer more once he gets to the hospital. And someone else — get me a glass of water. Cold water is fine,” Zhang barked. Whether intentionally or not, he gave Yang’s foot another slight twist, causing another burst of pain that made Yang wail again.

Yang grimaced, biting back further complaints — he wasn’t sure if Zhang had done it on purpose. Better not risk it.

“Secretary Yang, your leg’s broken. Xiao Zhang knows some medicine and just set it. Don’t move. Listen to him. The doctors at our town’s clinic can’t handle something like this. Even the county hospital might struggle. You may need to go to the city or even the province. But any delay would be bad for your recovery,” Li Lin said in an attempt to soothe him.

Yang muttered, “It’s me who’s in pain. How do we even know he really knows medicine?”

Just then, Family Planning Director Huo Shunren rushed over with a plastic cup filled with water. “Xiao Zhang, here’s the water.”

This time, Zhang Jiaohua didn’t chant out loud. Instead, he silently recited a mantra, took a sip, and sprayed it onto Yang’s broken leg. It was the Bone-Setting and Pain-Relief Mantra.

“If you don’t want to be in pain, drink this water,” Zhang said coldly, giving Yang no room to refuse. He poured it straight into Yang’s mouth. Yang, caught off guard, reflexively opened his mouth and got the whole cupful. He choked and began coughing violently.

“Careful. Don’t move. If it breaks again, it’s on you,” Zhang snapped before Yang could complain again.

“I…” Yang swallowed his anger. Seeing Zhang’s faint smile, he felt a bit unsettled. This guy felt like a personal jinx — ever since Zhang appeared, his rival Zhu Qingdong had been gaining the upper hand, and now he himself was laid up. And now, he was literally at Zhang’s mercy. How could he dare to mouth off?

Just wait till I recover, he thought darkly. You punk — I’ll make sure you suffer for this. Even if I can’t beat you, I’ll disgust you to death.

Yang self-consciously tried to fix the few messy strands of hair on his otherwise balding head. Lost things always feel most precious — to Yang, those few strands were like gold.

Zhang Jiaohua looked at Yang fussing with his hair and couldn’t help but laugh. “You might as well go completely bald.”

The people around them tried to suppress their laughter, their faces contorted with the effort.

Yang rolled his eyes — this was a sore spot. He didn’t choose to go bald! He got it from his parents. Was that his fault?

“Haha, sorry, I really couldn’t help it,” Zhang laughed mischievously.

“Xiao Zhang, here are the wooden boards you asked for. Be careful — don’t let him end up disabled,” Li Lin said, handing them over.

“Give me a hand. Hold this part here. Don’t move a muscle. Only release when I say so,” Zhang instructed.

He carefully aligned and splinted Yang’s leg, binding it tightly.

After quite a while, the town’s ambulance finally arrived.

“Sorry, sorry! We were out picking up a patient from the countryside. When we got the call, we already had a critical case onboard and had to drop them off first,” said Hu Yisuo, the ambulance doctor, clearly nervous about facing Yang Yongqiang’s wrath.

Yang was ready to explode at them — but a glance at Zhang Jiaohua’s smiling face made his heart skip. He swallowed his anger and waved the doctor off: “Forget it. You were doing your job. It’s not that serious.”

Li Lin immediately chimed in, “Secretary Yang’s fracture is quite serious. Thankfully, Xiao Zhang knows some bone-setting techniques and helped fix it. Please take extra care — don’t let this cause permanent damage.”

“He really managed to set it properly? Fractures can be tricky. If the bones aren’t aligned correctly, it could cause lifelong issues,” Dr. Hu Yisuo said, eyeing Zhang doubtfully.

That made Yang Yongqiang panic: “What?! What should I do then?!”

He was now terrified that Zhang was just a self-taught amateur who had used him as a guinea pig.

“We’ll need to take an X-ray at the hospital to see if the bones are aligned properly,” Hu Yisuo added, trying not to offend Zhang.
